ENYFA’S NEWSLETTER
January-February
Dear Parents/ Guardians,
Mathematics and Science Department
Congratulations to our ninth graders who passed the Integrated Algebra Regents and the Living
Environment Regents after 4 months of instruction. It is a testament to your hard work and dedication
thank you parents, students and teachers.
Lastly, we insist that your child to buy a graphing calculator (TI-83, TI-83plus or TI-84), graph paper,
ruler, compass and protractor. Due to budget constraints we can no longer give each child these
materials they are essential to your child’s education.
Thank you
We celebrate the following students for their amazing achievement

(DNA) Harlem Week
For the second straight year, ENYFA’s ninth graders will visit the Harlem DNA Lab in the first week of
March 2010. The 1,200 square foot Harlem DNA Lab occupies a former graphics arts classroom in the
John S. Roberts Educational Complex (J.H.S. 45). The state-of-the-art laboratory is equipped with
dissecting and compound microscopes, autoclave, incubators, centrifuges, micropipets, electrophoresis
apparatuses, DNA thermal cycler, and DNA chip analyzers. The laboratory will accommodate up to 32
students for experiments ranging from basic genetics and cell biology to modern DNA manipulation and
typing. Harlem DNA Lab is directly administered by the Dolan DNA Learning Center (DNALC), the world’s
first science center devoted entirely to genetics education, and is staffed by educators and Ph.D.
biologists who have been trained to deliver an exceptional learning experience for every visitor. Our
students will benefit immensely from this hands-on experience that they ordinarily would not be able to
perform in a high school lab. Finally, students and parents will be able to view the work online, a service
provided the Harlem DNA Lab.
Science Investigation
Fall 2009 was the debut of ENYFA’s Science Investigation class. The class is a non-Regents class which
aims to strengthen our students’ math and science foundation. It takes the pressure of the instructor
(and hence the student) of having to rigorously adhere to a Regents pacing schedule. A definite caveat
of this course is the student benefit: students can learn scientific concepts at their pace and see the
interdisciplinary connection between math and the other science disciplines. For example, students
learned about how chemical reactions and the chemical properties of the elements of the Periodic
Table; they can apply this knowledge in earth science when studying such concepts as chemical erosion
of rocks, properties of rocks and minerals, and radioactivity, to mention a few. Lovers of the popular TV
series CSI will definitely gain a broader understanding of the science concepts and applications
presented in the show.
