FROM DAN’S DESK
SENSITIVE LOCATIONS
Recently I was thumbing through a copy of “Presbyterian World Missions, Giving
Opportunities” looking for familiar faces like that of Sarah Henken who visited our church a
few years ago. As I looked at all the bright, enthusiastic faces in the publication I stumbled
across a particular section entitled “Mission Workers [what we used to call missionaries]
Serving in Sensitive Locations.” In that section there are 12 pictures of individuals and their
families that serve in areas where the gospel is not welcome. This section contains a Security
Note: Mission personnel serving in areas with high security concerns are included in this
publication, but no information should be posted about them on any website. This is for their
safety as well as that of the people with whom they work.
I was struck by the joy I saw in their faces, the love and enthusiasm they all seemed to have.
Some were young couples, with little children, others were much older. I thought about my
niece and her family while they were serving in Kazakhstan, how hard it was for them and how
they finally had to come home because the government simply didn’t want them there.
Rev. Don Shaw, who is a mission advocate, hunger action enabler and retired pastor in
Cascades Presbytery wrote: “We are doing wonderful things as a denomination. My sense is
that if Presbyterian mission asked more, rather than less, it just might be something that folks
would respond to. Presbyterians, I believe, will open their wallets because they are called to do
so as a response of faith – because the Holy Spirit has moved then to do so.”
Please keep all our mission workers in your prayers, especially those who are in “Sensitive
Locations.”
Grace and peace,
Dan 

THE GRACE CRUSADERS played the last regular season game of
Summer League on Monday, August 20th. Our opponent was "Smack My
Pitch Up", who had beaten us 11-3 during the second week of the season.
Monday's game was much closer, with the lead changing 4 times during the
game prior to the final inning. In the top of the inning, we entered trailing by a
score of 12-11. We plated 5 runs to take the lead, 16-12. In the bottom of the inning, we held
our opponents scoreless and claimed the 16-12 victory. The entire team provided a lot of
offense, and some good defense was displayed by Eric Hanys, Westley Kelley, and Victor
Garcia.
Next week, August 27th, we play in the end-of-season one-night tournament to determine the
overall league winner. We face off against the Parkway Sluggers at 8:00 p.m. on field 4. If
we defeat Parkway, we will play in the league championship game at 10:00 p.m. If Parkway
beats us, we will finish 4th in the division. So, a lot is at stake on Monday night!!

Aluminum Can Collection
Please keep saving your aluminum cans and bring them to the church for recycling.
The money raised is used to fund activities for our youth. It is nice if you rinse them
out so they won’t smell or attract bugs. Please, do not crush them. And please we do
ask that you do NOT put trash or tin cans in with the aluminum cans. Bring them to the church
anytime and we will take care of the rest. It is good for the environment, good for our youth, and it will
make you feel good too.

Time for New Hymnals!- Yes, it seems like we just replaced the ole “Red”
Presbyterian hymnal with the “new Blue”, but the “Blue” hymnals are now
more than 20 years old (1990). If we order by this Christmas the cost is
significantly less: $15 per hymnal with no shipping costs. Hymnals may be
purchased in honor or memory of someone and a sticker will indicate this inside
the front cover. Donations of any amount may be made to New Hymnal fund.
The new hymnals will be received June 1, 2013. If you want to see the list of hymns in the new
hymnal, Dan, Sandra and Irene all have samplers. Janie also has one in the church office.

Scripture calls one to study, ponder, listen and, finally, pray and even sing and rejoice
