Email Notes
We are looking for examples of a possible SMTP issue.
If you have a customer that can receive email properly, but cannot send, please do the
following:
1. Troubleshoot as normal (disable email scanning of AV, check firewall setting, client
settings, etc)
2. If this does not resolve the issue, try using the business outgoing mail server
(mail.shawcable.com) and see if it works, if it does then:
3. Create and FULLY document a Trouble Ticket (please note we cannot use your example
without a properly documented CSTT)
4. reply to this email with the following:
Customer account #:
Trouble Ticket Number:
Internet.abuse@sjrb.ca
mail-admins@sjrb.ca for /non delivery

EXtracting Email Header/Email Delivery Problem
We have noticed that in the past customers have been commonly referred to
van.help@sjrb.ca to resolve email delivery issues from Technical Service and could be
3
delayed when not providing all the necessary details. In order to facilitate a proper
escalation to TSR 2, we require Internet Headers from any failed/delayed messages, along
with the trouble ticket number, customer email username and password. Without this
information, there is a delay in us asking for it again and the issue is not immediately
resolved.
We have included a common response we give to our customers to show them how to extract
email headers from a variety of mail programs. Please try to walk a customer through the
extraction process, allowing the customer to send us relevant information that can be
immediately escalated through existing paths.
Extracting headers from email
Full email headers include information about an email and how it got to you. Most of the
information in an email header isn't displayed in the message itself. If you're not sure how
to extract email headers, the following are instructions for various email software
packages:
Outlook Express 4, 5 and 6
- Right mouse button click on the message
- Select "Properties"
- Click the "Details" tab
- Copy and paste window contents
Outlook
- Right mouse button click on the message
- Select "Options"
- Copy and paste the text in the Internet Headers window
Entourage
- Click on the message
- Select "Source" from the View menu
- Copy and paste
Netscape
Newer versions:
- Click on the "View" menu
4
- Select "Page Source"
- Copy and paste contents
Older versions:
Click on the "View" menu
Select "Headers,"
Select "All."
Copy and paste contents
Eudora
- Open the message.
- Under the title bar are four options.
- The second from the left is a box which says "Blah, Blah, Blah."
- Click on that and all headers will be shown.
- Copy and paste contents
We appreciate you assistance in helping our E-Service team.

on 98
Can release/renew an IP fine, can ping IPs and (in most cases) domain names, but cannot
browse the internet. Assuming that you have tried replacing the tcp/ip stack and
reinstalling the NIC, try the Winsock 2 fix.
Resolution: The Winsock2 Key in the Registry Is Damaged:
Uninstall Dial-Up Networking. This is done through the "Windows Setup" tab of the
"Add/Remove Programs" applet in the Windows Control Panel
Using Regedit, remove the following key:
HKEY_Local_Machine\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\Winsock2 by right-clicking on
it and delete.
After removing the key, reinstall Dial-Up Networking.
Windows should ask to Restart.
---------Re-installing TCP/IP on Windows XP: A number of Windows XP TCP/IP re-install procedures
have been suggested, but currently this is the only known method that will repair all TCP/IP
components, including the winsock2 registry entry.
Resolution: Start -> Run -> regedit
Navigate to: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\
Delete Winsock and Winsock2 folders.
Reboot machine.
Start -> Run -> ncpa.cpl
Right-click the Local Area Connection [X] in use and click Properties .
Click Install , click Protocol , click Add , then click Have Disk .
In the Copy manufacturer's files from box type or browse to C:\windows\inf , (where
windows = %SystemRoot%) then click OK .
Select Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) . Click OK .
When TCP/IP reinstallation is complete you are returned to Connection Properties. Close
this window and restart Windows (if necessary).
This will resolve "operation was attempted on something that is not a socket" error, as well
as various other Winsock errors.
Other XP TCP/IP re-install methods include: Other XP TCP/IP re-install methods include:
"netsh int ip reset log.txt"
Device Manager> View> Show Hidden Devices> Non-Plug and Play Drivers> TCP/IP Protocol
Driver> right click Uninstall> Reboot, then reinstall.
However, as mentioned, these other methods do not fix XP Winsock problems.
