STUDENT SECTION – NEWS
BOOKROOM CLOSURE
The Bookroom will be closed today.
PENNIES FOR PATIENTS
Keep your bills – we want change. Every penny counts when
you donate to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.
Beginning today your 4th period teacher will have a box for
donations. The 4th period class with the most money donated
wins an amazing prize! Remember, change for change!
AP EXAMS
AP exam deposits of $17 per exam may be made to the Poly
banker between now and February 27th (cash only). Please
submit to the banker a paper with your name and the subject of
the AP exams you are planning to take. The banker is closed
on Mondays. Please note that the deposits are
nonrefundable. Final payments of $67 will be due in midMarch and are refundable after the exam season.
THE MOVIE “SISTER AIMEE”
Come one and all on Saturday, February 28th at 2pm in the
auditorium to see the movie that you’ve heard so much about.
Meet director, Richard Rossi and Director of Photography, Jeff
Griffith and enjoy the movie. A $5 donation will be
appreciated. Thank you!
MAPS ACADEMY STUDENTS OF THE MONTH
The following students are MAPS Students of the Month for
February. Angina El and Peter Pen, grade 12; Jimmy Nguyen
and Doris Sam, grade 11; Nancy But and Monica Parales,
grade 10 and Sarai Duch and Victor Nguyen, grade 9. See
names displayed on the board outside Mr. Edwall’s office. Pick
up your certificates and a coupon to use at the Student Store
from Mr. Edwall. Night grade students, pick up your
certificate/coupon from Mrs. Arredondo in the Career Center.
SENIORS
Be sure to get into the habit of reading the “Senior Section” of
the bulletin. Helpful information to get you through the rest of
the year is included in this section.
STUDENT SECTION – OLD NEWS
SUPER TILE SALE
Do you want to leave a legacy at Poly? Buy and paint a tile
that will be put up on the 200 building or Rose Garden.
Purchase your tile at lunch in front of the 100 building or stop
by the Activities Office. Only $20! Hurry, the last day to
purchase a tile will be Tuesday, February 24th. The painting of
the tiles will take place on Thursday, February 26 thin Rm. 805
from 1:40-4pm.
ART COMPETITION
The Beat Syndrome Club is holding their 2nd art competition on
Wednesday, February 25th in Rm. 219. For more information
on the theme and requirements, please speak with any of the
art teachers.
INTERCULTURAL FAIRE PERFORMANCES
Is your club interested in performing at the upcoming
Intercultural Faire on Friday, March 27th? Cultural
performances are desired. Stop by the Activities Office for a
form. The last day to turn in your application is Wednesday,
March 4th.
ARTISTS FOR ACACIA
Please check the News on the Creative Writing/Acacia Club
group on School Loop to get a list of concepts we need
illustrated.

POLY’S BEST DANCE CREW
Will your crew be the last standing to win a prize of $250? We
are looking for all types of dancers. Auditions will be held on
March 10th and 11th from 3:00pm – 4:30pm. See Ms. Hickman

“SAVE A LIFE” T-SHIRTS
Have you ever wanted a “Save a Life” Yellow Ribbon shirt?
The Peer Counselors in the Care Center are now selling the tshirts in Rm. 205 for $12. All the proceeds go towards the
Yellow Ribbon Teen Suicide Prevention Program. For more
information, ask a Peer Counselor or seen Mr. Gonzalez in
Rm. 205.
TASK FORCE DVD
Poly JROTC will be collecting DVD's (new and used) to send to
service members overseas. Please help support this good
cause so our military men and women overseas may have the
entertainment on there break time. The top three classes will
get 4 large pizzas and a couple liters of soda. AMVETS will
pay for all shipping.
ATTENTION SOPHOMORE, JUNIORS, AND SENIORS!
An important step in the College application process is
receiving competitive scores on the SAT and/or ACT. A mock
SAT or ACT will be offered on March 7th here at Poly. The cost
is $15 and includes a personal evaluation of your performance
to show your strengths and weaknesses. Sign up now for the
mock test to find out if one of these courses would help you
improve your scores. Call 1-877-REV-PREP or visit
www.revolutionprep.com for information on dates and to apply
for scholarship assistance for the courses.
CAHSEE PREP SESSIONS
Students wishing to attend prep classes to help pass the
CAHSEE (High School Exit Exam) are invited to attend prep
sessions being offered on Saturdays from now until May. Go
to: www.academicuprise.org and click on CAHSEE Prep
Session.
RAISE $$$ FOR POLY GRAD NIGHT
Please support Poly Grad Night by enrolling in an easy and
free fundraiser. Money can be earned for Grad Night each
time you shop at participating local and online merchants, just
by registering your grocery loyalty, debit and credit cards. Visit

Are you confused about what you need to get done in order to
graduate? Gown order? Grad Night? Senior Packet? Senior

SERVICE LEARINING HOURS
Don’t forget the March 3rd deadline to submit our hours. 40
hours are needed to help complete your graduation
requirements. After all that hard work in your classes for four
years, you’re going to let this stand in your way?! See Ms.
Chaney in Rm. 128 with your concerns.
CLUB SECTION
WRITERS AND ARTISTS
The Creative Writing Club/Acacia will meet in Rm. 302 at lunch
on Wednesday, February 25th. Bring your creativity for a writing
experience. If you intend to do artwork for Acacia, please bring
something you have sketched or painted to show our art editor.
HELP FIND A CURE!
Are you interested in finding a cure for pediatric cancer? Due
to the overwhelming success of our children's charity event, a
few students and staff have formed a Children's Cancer
Awareness Club. It will focus on raising awareness in pediatric
cancer as well as raising money for charitable donations.
Please come to our first meeting on Friday, February 27 th in
the auditorium. Please enter the SILVER doors by the 200
building.
INTERCULTURAL FAIRE APPLICATIONS
“From Sea to Shining Sea” is our theme for this year’s
Intercultural Faire being held on Friday, March 27th. Any
chartered Poly club may stop by the Activities Office and pick
up an application packet. The deadline for submitting
completed applications with the completed booth watcher
forms is Wednesday, March 4th. Don’t procrastinate, as
popular food items and electricity are limited. First come, first
served!
VOLUNTEER -SERVICE LEARNING HOUR SECTION
COLORADO LAGOON RESTORATION PROJECT
If you are interested in earning up to five Service Learning
Hours, attend the information meeting on Wednesday,
February 24th from 4-5:30pm at the Port of Long Beach
Administration Building, 925 Harbor Plaza in the 5th Floor
Training Room. Help or ecosystem and restore this local
treasure.
VOLUNTEERS NEEDED FOR BOOK FAIR
The librarian at Roosevelt Elementary is looking for students to
help with their book fair being held March 2-4. Please contact
Ms. Conrad at 595-9466. You can earn service learning hours,
so bring you log!
GIVING THE GIFT OF HOPE: DAFFODIL DAYS
The daffodil is the first flower of spring and a symbol of hope.
The American Cancer Society delivers bouquets of daffodils
anonymously to cancer patients at hospitals in your
community. Volunteers are needed to help deliver these Gifts
of Hope to cancer patients on Saturday, March 14th at the
Boeing Warehouse (3460 Cherry Ave. Bldg. 56, Long Beach
from 8am-3pm (lunch provided). If you’re interested and want
to learn more, contact Spencer Lyons at slyons@cancer.org or

VOLUNTEER/PARTICIPANT OPPORTUNITY
Volunteer or sign up to participate in the upcoming memorial
bike ride and barbeque to honor the life of Deputy Maria
Cecilia Rosa on Saturday, March 28th. The MCRMF is a
foundation that will fund educational scholarships and is
looking to make this a successful event. Your help or
participation would certainly help. Go to www.mcrmf.org for
further information and to sign up. This is a great, fulfilling way
to earn Service Learning Hours.
30-MINUTE BEACH CLEAN UPS
Meet on the beach at Granada Avenue in the Belmont Shore
area on the third Saturday of each month to participate in the
city’s 30-Minute Beach Clean Up. Free parking, bags, gloves,
refreshments, and door prizes are available. Such an easy
and constructive way to earn Service Learning Hours!
SCHEDULE YOUR OWN BEACH CLEAN UP!
Groups or clubs may schedule their own beach clean up at any
time by contacting Justin Rudd at justinrudd@aol.com. Bags
and gloves will be provided.

Do you need creative and fun ways to earn Service Learning

SERVICE LEARNING HOURS
Have you been keeping track of your hours? Have you been
postponing completion of this mandatory graduation
requirement? Every senior needs to complete 40 hours before
March 3rd. Seniors especially need to pay attention to the
many opportunities listed in this bulletin. For additional
opportunities, please stop by Mrs. Chaney in Rm. 128 where
Service Learning Logs are also available.
FRADULENT ORGANIZATIONS
Do not perform Service Learning Hours without first checking
with Ms. Chaney in Rm. 128. Not all organizations that offer
hours are legitimate and do not meet our guidelines. Please
be sure to get approval from her beforehand. The deadline for
all senior Service Learning hours is Tuesday, March 3rd. No
exceptions!!!

CSULB ADMISSIONS REPRESENTATIVE VISIT
If you applied to CSULB for the fall ’09, an admissions
representative will be in the College & Career Center on
Thursday, February 26th at 1pm to update you on the status of
your application. Stop by to sign up ahead of time, so that you
may be dismissed from class. If you can’t miss 5th period, stop
by afterwards.
FINANCIAL AID MINI-WORKSHOPS
Priority deadline for the FAFSA is March 2nd. Stop by one of
the workshops if you need help in filling out your application.
They will be held February 23,24,25 & March 2 @ 1:45pm in
the Hicks Gallery For more information or if you would like a
one-on-one appointment, stop by the College & Career Center,
Rm. 801.
SAT & ACT WAIVERS AVAILABLE FOR JUNIORS
Stop by the College & Career Center, Rm. 801, to pick up an
application. If you qualify, you can get two waivers per test.
Juniors thinking about applying to a 4-year college/university
should take the SAT and/or ACT at least once before junior
year is over.
STUDENT RECURITMENT FOR TRAINING PROGRAM
The Occupation Therapy Training Program is looking for
interested seniors who are in need of a job, assistance in
enrolling into college or certificate program. Up to $300 in
incentives are given to students who are committed. Please
attend the orientation on Wednesday, March 4 th at lunch in the
College & Career Center.
EARLY BIRD REGISTRATION PROGRAM
Any Senior planning on attending LBCC in the fall '09 needs to
stop by the College & Career Center to sign up for the Early
Bird Registration Program. You must fill out an LBCC
application prior to signing up for the Early Bird Program
which is available in the College & Career Center. Remember,
an LBCC rep is in the College & Career Center every Tuesday
during lunch. Don't wait until the last minute!
CSU CAMPUSES STILL ACCEPTING APPLICATIONS

CLASSROOM VISIT
Today, Student Commissioners will be dropping off the
collection boxes for the upcoming Pennies for
Patients/Leukemia and Lymphoma Society fundraising drive.
Thank you for your patience with the brief interruption.
Collections will be done on the last green day of each week
with the final pick up day being Friday, March 13th.
