GIRLS’ BASKETBALL CIF-SS FINALS
Our girls’ basketball team will play Cajon at the CIF-SS finals
tonight at 8:30pm at Mater Dei High. Tickets are available at
the banker’s window until noon today; $9 for adults; $5 for
students with ID’s and $5 for children 13 and under. Please go
and support the team and show your Jackrabbit spirit! Parking
is limited, so carpool!
BASEBALL OPENING DAY
Please come out to the baseball field today for Opening Day.
Poly has a 3pm game vs. El Segundo. Hot dogs, kettle corn,
and shaved ice will be available. All Poly students who arrive
by the 2nd inning will be eligible to enter a free opportunity
drawing for a $100 cash prize! The winner will be announced
at the end of the 5th inning. See you there!
PENNIES FOR PATIENTS: WEEK ONE
Thank you for your generous donations. Last week Student
Commission collected $1,146.73 in donations for our Pennies
for Patients fund which will go to benefit cancer research and
patient aid. Poly’s goal is $2,500. There are still two more
weeks to donate! Don’t forget, the class that donates the most
money receives a pizza party! The top five classes are:
Sawyer ($65.11), Hyatt ($53.43), Eve ($42.14), Gurba
($36.75), and Pepek ($33.43). Every penny counts! Keep up
your donations in your 4th period class! Thank you. Janelle

ARTISTS FOR ACACIA
Thank you to all artists who met this week to take on
assignments. Artists are requested to bring their ideas and
what they are working on for Acacia to the general meeting at
lunch on Wednesday, March 11th and the following week on
March 18th in Rm. 302. The deadline is March 25th.

LISTEN TO A LIFE ESSAY CONTEST
The annual Listen to a Life Essay Contest is an opportunity to
build closer connections between young and old. You must be
8-18 years old to enter and write a 300-word essay based on
an interview with a person over 50 years old. The grand prize
includes a Lenovo ThinkCentre computer for the student and
$25,000 of Orchard educational software for the school. For

Monday, March 30th.
PHYSICAL CONSEQUENCES OF USING TOBACCO
Say goodbye to your good looks! Smokers suffer twice the
tooth loss and cavities as non-smokers. You can look forward
to receding gums and yellow, brown teeth. If you would like
help kicking the habit, go to the Care Center, Rm. 205 or see
Ms. Beegle in Rm. 211.
STUDENT SECTION – OLD NEWS
AP EXAMS PAYMENTS
The deadline for deposits for AP exams will be extended at
least a week and longer if necessary. Deposits of $17 per
exam taken are to be in cash only. Please submit to the
banker a paper with your name and the subject of the AP
exams you are planning to take. The banker is closed on
Mondays. Please note that the deposits are nonrefundable.
Final payments of $69 per exam will be accepted at the banker
between the dates of March 18th through April 10th. Please
note that the College Board has increased the fee for AP
exams from $84 to $86 this year. The announcement was
made only days ago. We apologize for any inconvenience this
may cause.
POLY’S BEST DANCE CREW
Will your crew be the last standing to win a prize of $250? We
are looking for all types of dancers. Auditions will be held on
March 10th and 11th from 3pm – 4:30pm. See Ms. Hickman in
Rm. 306 for more information.
FALL ASB ELECTION
Are you interested in being in Student Commission? Would
you like to be a part of the many student activities on campus?
Approve the spending of ASB funds? Are you organized? Are
you a team player? Are you spirited? Then stop by the
Activities Office, Rm. 805 to pick up an application to run for
office. The last day to turn in your application and campaign
poster is Wednesday, March 18th.
PENNIES FOR PATIENTS
Keep your bills – we want change. Every penny counts when
you donate to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. Your 4th
period teacher has a box for donations. The 4th period class
with the most money donated wins an amazing prize!
Remember, change for change! This ends Friday, March 13th.
"THE DARK KNIGHT" IS COMING!
On Friday, March 20th the Stage Crew Club and CCAC will
host a special movie night in the auditorium. The feature with
be none other than "The Dark Knight" on our huge movie
screen and top of the line digital sound system. Come feel the
rumble of explosions under your feet! The movie will begin at
exactly at 2:45pm. Admission is $1 at the door. We will be
selling sodas, monster candy bars, chips and popcorn. Help
us raise money for pediatric cancer patients! Additional
donations will be welcomed!
CAHSEE PREP SESSIONS
Students wishing to attend prep classes to help pass the
CAHSEE (High School Exit Exam) are invited to attend prep
sessions being offered on Saturdays from now until May. Go
to: www.academicuprise.org and click on CAHSEE Prep
Session.
SCHOOL CENTS
Save your shopping receipts from Lakewood and Cerritos Mall
and bring them to the Activities Office, Rm. 805. For each
dollar spent, we are given points, which add up to money for
our school! Thank you!

free fundraiser. Money can be earned for Grad Night each

GRADUATION SPEAKER APPLICATIONS
Seniors, are you interested in speaking at your graduation
ceremony? Do you have an inspirational message you would
like to share? Memories to recall? Stop by the Activities
Office, Rm. 805 to pick up an application. You must have a 2.5
cumulative GPA, as well as good discipline and attendance
records. The last day to submit your application is Monday,
March 16th.
NEED ASSISTANCE?
Are you confused about what you need to get done in order to
graduate? Gown order? Grad Night? Senior Packet? Senior
clearance? Fines? Stop by the Activities Office, Rm. 805 for
answers.
CLUB SECTION
CREATIVE WRITING/ACACIA CLUB
The general meeting for Writers and Artists is Wednesday,
March 11th at lunch in Rm. 302.
VOLUNTEER -SERVICE LEARNING HOUR SECTION
GIVING THE GIFT OF HOPE: DAFFODIL DAYS
The daffodil is the first flower of spring and a symbol of hope.
The American Cancer Society delivers bouquets of daffodils
anonymously to cancer patients at hospitals in your
community. Volunteers are needed to help deliver these Gifts
of Hope to cancer patients on Saturday, March 14th at the
Boeing Warehouse (3460 Cherry Ave. Bldg. 56, Long Beach
from 8am-3pm (lunch provided). If you’re interested and want

BURNETT CARNIVAL NEEDS VOLUNTEERS
Burnett Elementary School needs volunteers to help with the
school carnival on Thursday, March 26th from 12-5 pm.
Volunteers are needed to help with set up, working in booths
and clean up and can sign up to work the entire time, or arrive
as soon as your schedule allows. To sign up or to get further
information, please contact school secretary, Mrs. SmithBrowne at (562) 595-9466. Thanks for helping to make this
event a success.
VOLUNTEER/PARTICIPANT OPPORTUNITY
Volunteer or sign up to participate in the upcoming memorial
bike ride and barbeque to honor the life of Deputy Maria
Cecilia Rosa on Saturday, March 28th. The MCRMF is a
foundation that will fund educational scholarships and is
looking to make this a successful event. Your help or
participation would certainly help. Go to www.mcrmf.org for
further information and to sign up. This is a great, fulfilling way
to earn Service Learning Hours.
YOUTH BASEBALL NEEDS VOLUNTEERS
Little League’s Challenger Division is a program for special
needs children. If you are interested in helping out, please

30-MINUTE BEACH CLEAN UPS
Meet on the beach at Granada Avenue in the Belmont Shore
area on the third Saturday of each month to participate in the
city’s 30-Minute Beach Clean Up. Free parking, bags, gloves,
refreshments, and door prizes are available. Such an easy
and constructive way to earn Service Learning Hours!
MONTHLY SEAL BEACH CLEAN UPS
On the fourth Saturday from 11am-2pm Seal Beach clean ups
will be conducted. Meet at 1st Street and Ocean, next to Rivers
End Café. Parking passes, bags, and gloves are provided.

SCHEDULE YOUR OWN BEACH CLEAN UP!
Groups or clubs may schedule their own beach clean up at any

SERVICE LEARNING HOURS
You should have already turned in your Service Learning Logs
to Ms. Chaney in Rm. 128. If you haven’t, please check in with
her as soon as possible. Seniors who have not yet completed
their 40 required hours will not graduate!
FRADULENT ORGANIZATIONS
Do not perform Service Learning Hours without first checking
with Ms. Chaney in Rm. 128. Not all organizations that offer
hours are legitimate and do not meet our guidelines. Please
be sure to get approval from her beforehand. The deadline for
all senior Service Learning hours is Tuesday, March 3 rd. No
exceptions!!!

POLY HIGH’S 2ND ANNUAL TRADE & VOCATIONAL FAIR
On Wednesday, March 11th we will be hosting our 2nd Annual
Trade & Vocational Fair during lunch in the quad.
Representatives from various types of vocational,
apprenticeships and technical programs will have a table with
information to distribute to students. Stop by and speak to a
representative to see how you can enroll in theses high
demand, high paying, fast-growing careers that only take tow
to three years to complete. For more information, stop by the
College & Career Center, Rm. 801.
SAN DIEGO STATE UNIVERSITY VISIT
Attention 10th and 11th grade students interested in SDSU. A
representative will be in the College & Career Center
Thursday, March 12th during lunch. Stop by and listen to what
she has to say about SDU and what you need to do now to
make sure you are eligible.

SUBSTITUTE TEACHER
Teachers, if you are going to be absent, first please check
with Judy or Alex in Rm. 105. Paul Farmer is our on
campus substitute for the remainder of the school year.
BEFORE you call for your sub, PLEASE check with us to
see if he has been assigned to a classroom. If he hasn’t,
we will assign him to the first teacher that notifies us.
