The Junior Math Road Rally is a math competition that encourages problem solving, team work, co-operation and, of course, excellent math skills. Our team worked through a series of seven stations throughout the day, each with a different math focus and problems to solve, and gained points at each station. At the end of the day, the 28 teams gathered in the Roy Edwards hall for the awards. Incredibly, out of 28 teams, our Warnica students came first! Congratulations to Harris M, Ffion K, Brendon F and Kyla M. for their first place finish. Mrs Barber Athletics The Boys Intermediate Basketball team, Girls Intermediate Volleyball teams have started playing games. See Zone dates under Important Dates at the end of the newsletter. Warnica’s Hockey team will soon be playing some games through February as well. One solution... Mabels Labels! Just speak to Mme. Burns, grade 1 FI teacher, she loves them, it makes finding homes for those lost items so much easier. Go to www.warnica.mabelslabels.com to order and a portion will go back to our school. Labels are a lot more economical than replacing clothing! Breakfast Club Thanks to all of the families that have generously donated to our Breakfast Club program. We would also like to thank our Breakfast Club volunteers who spend their morning making healthy breakfasts for students. Donations are always welcome to help offset the costs involved with running this program. Ideas for donations are: healthy cereal, juice, muffin or pancake mix, pancake syrup or fresh fruit. Before and after school (B&A) programs offer care programs for children in Kindergarten to grade 6 before and/or after the regular school day and some schools offer full days of care on PA days and holidays. B&A will only operate in schools if enough families require care. To help us determine the needs of each school, a survey is being sent home with youngest/only students in kindergarten to grade 5 or you can also complete the survey online by visiting: http://fluidsurveys.com/s/scdsbbeforeandafterchildcar e2015/ Even if your child already attends B&A, it is still important to complete the survey. Please be sure to fill out the survey online or return a paper copy to your school office by Monday, February 16, 2015. Listings will be available in early spring 2015 confirming which schools will operate B&A in September 2015. The key is organization. Be realistic about how much time you need to get ready in the morning. Time pressures add stress to everyone. Some tips from the Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit: Get yourself ready first, before your child. Go to bed at a reasonable hour so you wake up rested and ready for the day. Plan ahead: pack lunches, find the mittens, and pick clothes the night before. Keep the television off! Electronics and TV can be very disruptive first thing in the morning. If there is extra time, let them use it to read, chat, or help out. Be clear and realistic about what your child can do. Praising them when they do something well encourages them to do it again and gain new skills. Remember to have patience. Your child learns from watching you and you have the unique opportunity to show these skills. In time your child will learn to plan ahead, be organized, and develop patience. For more information you can call Health Connection at 705-721-7520 or 1-877-721-7520 and speak with a public health nurse or click on the health unit website at www.simcoemuskokahealth.org or visit www.triplepontario.ca.
