Elsevier and the Geological Society of London partner to deliver cutting-edge science for oil and
gas exploration

STM publisher Elsevier has announced a new partnership with the Geological Society of London (the
Society). The deal will allow customers of Geofacets, Elsevier's premier research tool for
geoscientists, to quickly find, search and analyse geo-referenced maps sourced from the Society's
renowned Lyell Collection.

Wiley-Blackwell and JISC Collections announce new three year agreement
Wiley-Blackwell and JISC Collections have announced a new three year NESLi2 agreement for the
higher education and further education communities in the UK. This agreement offers libraries
access to more than 1,500 journals on Wiley Online Library on mutually beneficial terms that take
into account the financial challenges facing the library community at this time.

Mexico-based Consejo Nacional de Ciencia y Tecnologia selects Thomson Reuters Web of
Knowledge
Thomson Reuters has announced that the Consejo Nacional de Ciencia y Tecnologia (CONACYT), a
national council promoting science and technology policies in Mexico, has selected Web of
Knowledge to enhance the research and analytic capabilities of researchers across the nation. All
118 institutions and universities supported by CONACYT will now gain access to Web of Knowledge,
connecting Mexican researchers to the most influential literature from around the world.

CAS in deal to provide unlimited SciFinder access to CHEST Consortium
Chemical information provider Chemical Abstracts Service (CAS) has announced an agreement to
provide unlimited SciFinder access to the CHEST Consortium. The consortium comprises more than
47 academic institutions in the UK & Ireland, including the University of Oxford, University of
Cambridge and University of Manchester.

Microsoft and Compal Electronics sign patent agreement
Software vendor Microsoft Corp. and Compal Electronics, Inc. have signed a patent agreement that
provides broad coverage under Microsoft's patent portfolio for Compal's tablets, mobile phones, ereaders and other consumer devices running the Android or Chrome Platform. While the contents of
the agreement have not been disclosed, the parties indicate that Microsoft will receive royalties
from Compal under the agreement.

Researchers and students in Japan gain access to Springer Journal Archives on SpringerLink
STM publisher Springer and the Japan Alliance of University Library Consortia for E-Resources
(JUSTICE) recently signed a comprehensive agreement for current electronic journal subscriptions

and online journal back files on SpringerLink. Under the deal, Springer will provide access to 1,000
journals in the Springer Journal Archives from the first volume published up to 1999.

HighWire Press and TEMIS announce strategic technology and business partnership
HighWire Press has announced a strategic technology and business partnership with TEMIS, a
provider of Semantic Content Enrichment solutions for the Enterprise. Under the agreement,

Oxford University Press to publish IMA’s new mathematics journal
The Institute of Mathematics and its Applications (IMA) is set to launch a new journal, Information
and Inference: A Journal of the IMA, with Oxford University Press (OUP). The first issue of

Amazon brings HTML5 support to Kindle with Format 8
Amazon.com has launched its next-generation file-format for Kindle books. Kindle Format 8 (KF8)
will reportedly replace Mobi 7, and it brings support for HTML5 and CSS3. According to Amazon, KF8
has over 150 new formatting capabilities, which are outlined in full on its website.

STN redesigned to offer better search and analysis capabilities
The STN partners - CAS and FIZ Karlsruhe - have announced that a completely new platform will be

CUP to publish Episteme: A journal of individual and social epistemology
Cambridge University Press (CUP), the publishing division of the UK's University of Cambridge, has
announced that Episteme, the journal in social epistemology, will move to CUP in 2012 with a
broader remit and an increase in frequency to four issues per year. The journal has, in its first eight
years, pioneered the field of social epistemology.

The Association of Research Libraries (ARL) has published Digital Preservation, SPEC Kit 325, which
explores the strategies that ARL member institutions use to protect evolving research collections
and examines the roles and responsibilities of stakeholders. The survey asked ARL libraries about
their digital content, their strategies for preserving that content, and the staff, time, and funding
they currently devote to digital preservation.

Smartphones and tablets drive digital traffic in top EU nations, says comScore report
comScore has released an overview of the connected device landscape across EU5 – the European
markets of France, Germany, Italy, Spain and the UK. The data shows cross-platform digital media

Royal Society announces free access to its journal archive
The Royal Society, the UK's national academy of science, has announced that its historical journal
archive has been made permanently free to access online. Around 60,000 historical scientific papers

Ten public libraries to host 'Discover Earth' interactive travelling exhibition

OCLC's Executive Search Committee names librarians, staff and other library leaders to
Community Advisory Group
The Executive Search Committee of the OCLC Board of Trustees has named 13 people to a
Community Advisory Group that will be involved in the search for the next President and Chief
Executive Officer of OCLC to succeed Jay Jordan, who has announced his plans to retire June 30,
2012. By then he will have served 14 years in that position, the longest tenure of any OCLC
president.

Wolters Kluwer Health names Jayne Marks as Vice President of Publishing
Wolters Kluwer Health has announced the appointment of Jayne Marks as Vice President, Publishing,

CCC disseminates over $170 million to Rightsholders in FY11
Non-profit copyright licensing solutions provider Copyright Clearance Center, Inc. (CCC) has
announced a record royalty payment of $171.1 million to rightsholders in FY11, an increase of more
than 10 percent over the previous year ($154.3 million). During the last 10 years, CCC has
distributed more than $1.3 billion to rightsholders.

UK digitisation programme to take medical archives, historical records online
The JISC will be investing £5.6 million in 24 projects across 30 universities and cultural heritage
organisations to bring selected archives out of the vaults and onto computer screens. This is

Serials Solutions and JST agreement to enable discovery of J-Stage content from Summon
service
Serials Solutions has signed an agreement with the Japan Science and Technology Agency (JST) to
enable the discovery of its Japan Science and Technology Information Aggregator, Electronic (JStage) content from the Summon web-scale discovery service. With the inclusion of J-Stage,
researchers all over the world will now be able to discover full-text articles from peer-reviewed
Japanese academic society journals for their research projects.
