30 Days – Immigration
Before you watch. There are millions of illegal immigrants in the US today. Do you think it is more
appropriate to deport them or grant them amnesty (allow them a path to citizenship)?
1. What do the Minutemen do at the border?
2. What are Frank’s rules for the 30 days?
3. How is the Gonzales family different from the stereotype of “illegal immigrant”?
4. Why does the Gonzales’ daughter, Armida, think Frank is a hypocrite?
5. How much does the Gonzales’ family make a year? Could you live off that?
6. Where does the daughter Armida want to go to college? Should she get federal aid to pay for college?
Why or why not?
7. Armida has been in California for over 10 years. Should she be allowed to pay in-state tuition when she
goes to college? Why or why not?
8. What is the difference between the bills that were in Congress at the time the episode was filmed?
9. What is the difference between Armida and Frank’s views about assisting illegal immigrants?
10. When the people at the rally chant “USA” and Frank says “they don’t mean that”, what does he mean?
Why do you think they chanted it?
11. Why haven’t the Gonzales’ been back to visit their family in Mexico?
12. Describe Mario’s family’s living conditions.
13. How is being poor in Mexico different from being poor in America?
14. Armida tries hard in school because of where she came from in Mexico. How does growing up where
you did affect how hard you try in school?
15. How did Frank’s attitude about illegal immigration change by the end of the episode?
16. Did your attitude about illegal immigration change because of the episode? Why or why not?
17. If the son had been a gang member, would Frank have felt the same way about the family by the end of
the episode? Would you?
18. Do you think illegal immigration is a big problem in Texas? Why or why not?
19. If the US granted all undocumented workers amnesty and made them citizens, would that encourage
more people to come to the country illegally?
20. In 2011, Texas announced that 70% of illegal immigrants collected some sort of welfare assistance. The
assistance was usually given to the parents on behalf of their US born children (children born in the US
are automatically citizens, regardless of their parents’ citizenship status). Undocumented workers do
contribute significantly to the Texas economy through work, spending, sales tax, and other ways. Should
they be allowed to collect government assistance? Send their kids to public schools? Go to hospitals for
care? Why or why not?
