Spain needed people to come to Texas because they needed to keep the French out and
convert Indians to Christianity and set up trade posts.
2. Why was the Spanish claim to Texas threatened by Fort St. Louis?
The French were colonizing Texas, but Texas belonged to Spain…but Spain had left and
no Spaniards were here.
3. Give several examples of the Spanish legacy here in Texas.
Ranching, rodeos, Christianity, cowboys, irrigation, architecture and patios, food, fiesta,

4. Describe the events of 1821 that changed the lives of some North Americans.
Moses Austin went to Mexico to talk to the Spanish about colonizing TX.
Mexico wins independence from Spain.
SFA starts bringing settlers to TX.
5. What happened to the land in Texas after Mexican independence?
Empresarios started colonizing. Settlements went from spread apart to being built more
closely together.
6. Briefly describe the purpose of the “Old Three Hundred.” Who was their “leader”?
First Anglo settlers SFA brought to Texas.

Bring settlers to EAST Texas
8. Compare the National Colonization Laws to the State Colonization Laws.
Colonization Laws of 1823 and 1824 had people going into Mexico to buy their
land…NOT successful.
State Colonization Laws allowed empresarios to sell the land in TX…was successful.
9. Why were the State Colonization Laws more successful than any other attempt to settle Texas?




Government targeted more than just Mexicans
Fair price set
Empresarios had more control and could make rules
People could go to TX and stay instead of traveling to MX.
10. How did Mexico benefit from getting Americans to settle in Texas?
Made money, kept control from the U.S., more presence in the area means more
power/control in the area, Mexico set limits on settlers and encouraged them to “follow
the Mexican” lifestyle
11. What are the names of the men that Moses Austin had to meet with to win his empresario grant? Who
was the most helpful?
Governor Martinez and Baron de Bastrop. Bastrop was more helpful.

13. Compare the Spanish settlements to the Anglo settlements. Were they the same? How did they differ?
Spanish set up mission/presidios and ranching communities that were usually spread far
apart.
Anglos set up colonies which are more like towns or neighborhoods.
14. Why were Mexican leaders unhappy with Haden Edwards?
He tried to take the land away from the existing Mexican settlers in the area and then he
started a rebellion and renamed his colony the Republic of Fredonia.
15. What was significant about Power and Hewetson’s colony?

20. What happened to the number of contracts and settlers after the colonization laws were passed?
They increased.
21. Vocabulary:
Citizens – a member of a nation who is entitled to full rights
Colonization – to form a colony
Empresario – in Spanish means “contractor”; sells land to settlers; (think real estate agent)
Immigration – the act of immigrating (moving) to a foreign land.
Land Grant – a block of public land that the government gives to a business, school, or
other organization
Land Title – formal document giving you ownership of land
Speculators – someone who buys large amounts of land and sells it off bit by bit.
