Biology 2222 Lab Guide, 2006-2007
Course Description: This lab is designed to enhance student’s overall understanding of human
anatomy and physiology by emphasizing structural and functional relationships. It provides experiments,
demonstrations, dissection, model and microscope slide study of the following systems: endocrine,
cardiovascular, respiratory, digestive, urinary, and reproductive. Completion of Biology 2221 Lab with a
grade of C or better is a pre-requisite. Biology 2222 is a co-requisite or pre-requisite. This lab is
required for KSU students in Nursing, Sport Management and Exercise Science. It is not applicable
towards a biology degree (except as an elective) nor can it be used to satisfy the General Education Science
requirement.
Cheating and Plagarism (Academic Integrity):
Every KSU student is responsible for upholding the provisions of the Student Code of Conduct, as
published in the Undergraduate and Graduate Catalogs. Section II of the Student Code of Conduct
addresses the University's policy on academic honesty, including provisions regarding plagiarism and
cheating, unauthorized access to University materials, misrepresentation/falsification of University records
or academic work, malicious removal, retention, or destruction of library materials, malicious/intentional
misuse of computer facilities and/or services, and misuse of student identification cards. Incidents of
alleged academic misconduct will be handled through the established procedures of the University
Judiciary Program, which includes either an "informal" resolution by a faculty member, resulting in a grade
adjustment, or a formal hearing procedure, which may subject a student to the Code of Conduct's minimum
one semester suspension requirement. If you are caught cheating &/or plagiarizing, you will receive a “0”
for that assignment & the KSU Judiciary Program & Biology Department Chair will be notified.
Withdrawal Policy:
The Withdrawal Policy as stated in the college catalog and the current schedule of classes (see page 33-34)
will be strictly followed. The last day to withdraw from the course with a W grade is March 2.
Instructor will not initiate withdrawals. Students who fail to attend and complete the course successfully
will receive an F grade unless they complete the procedure referred to in the above publications.
Due to the required co-requisite statement above, if students withdraw from the lecture Bio 2222 they must
also withdraw from lab.
In addition to KSU withdrawal requirements, frequent withdrawals on your college transcript may be
viewed negatively by admission directors of graduate and professional programs. They also affect your
1
eligibility for Hope Scholarship. With this in mind, please consult with your instructor and/or academic
advisor prior to initiating a withdrawal.

Laboratory Policies:
1.
Lab Attendance is required. Absence from more than two required sessions will result
in a failing grade regardless of other completed work or accumulated grades.
2.
There are no makeups of missed labs, but students are responsible for the material covered.
No makeups will be given on Lab Practical Exams. In unavoidable, documentable absence
from lab exam student must contact instructor to arrange a written make-up exam comparable
to the Lab Practical Exam. It is the student’s responsibility to contact the instructor prior to or
within 24 hours of the missed exam. This option will be utilized at the instructor’s discretion.
3.
Laboratory safety rules found in the lab manual are to be read and followed without
exception.
4.
Safety glasses must be utilized by all lab students; these glasses as well as dissecting kits,
and gloves will be available in the lab, but students may purchase their own personal ones if
they so choose. Lab coats or aprons are optional, however some type of protective covering
of street clothes is strongly suggested. Open-toed shoes and short shorts or skirts are
prohibited for safety reasons. Do not bring friends or children, etc. into the laboratory.
Only registered students are permitted in the lab room. If you would like additional
information about any materials utilized in the laboratory, feel free to ask your instructor.
5.
Lab exams are practical exams. They will consist of 25 stations containing setups of lab
experiments, demonstrations, models, dissection specimens, and microscope slides. Each
setup will have a question card with four questions per station. These questions may be fillin/completion, short answer, multiple choice or short essay.
6.
At the beginning of each lab period the daily lab checkout assignment will be announced and
written on the board. Students must individually present this assignment to the instructor for
a (10) point evaluation prior to leaving the laboratory. There will be ten of these checkout
assignments which students are to complete for the 100 point grade total. These assignments
will consist of (10) point lab quizzes, microscope slide drawings, labeled anatomy drawings
or experimental data tables, completion of review exercises sheets, etc.
7. In case of severe weather or other emergencies consult KSU web site for announcements of
school closings. If KSU is closed lab will be canceled. Watch Web Vista for announcements
regarding the canceled lab or schedule revisions due to school closings.
