Members of 11 LC were invited to

Queen’s University Belfast last week to take part in an exciting and innovative

Engineering Challenge. Their day began with an early start, as the bus left school at

8.30 in the morning for the trip to Belfast.

Students had no idea what was ahead of them until they arrived at the impressive

Great Hall building at Queen’s, where their eyes were well and truly opened to the opportunities that studying at Queen’s could offer and where they were treated to several presentations about studying and working in Engineering.

The workshop which was a collaboration between Queen’s and the Engineering firm FG Wilson, was aimed at informing students about studying Engineering, in line with the current STEM agenda and it also focussed students on the vast possibilities that a career in Engineering could offer.

The highlight of the day however, had to be the Engineering Challenge itself, as the students competed to create a structure strong enough to support a toy truck. This

‘sticky’ challenge saw our students putting all their new-found engineering know-how into practice as they battled valiantly to build their 30cm high tower from just Marshmallows and Spaghetti!

Congratulations go to Alistair McFarland,

Patrick Razon and Lee Kelly who constructed the winning tower. Not only did it stand up to the challenge, but they were also commended on their creative design. Thank you to Tommy Foreman from Invest NI for his inspiration, guidance and assistance during the task.

We would like to take this opportunity to thank Patricia Hampson from Queen’s

University and FG Wilson for inviting us to take part in such a fun and innovative workshop and for funding the event, which will hopefully have spurred on our budding Engineers!

This is the first year for the completion of the new specification and 48 Year 12 pupils created a game for their controlled assessment. Each game had an opening screen created in Photoshop and 3 levels created using Gamemaker software.

Pupils also had to include a design specification for their game, a user guide and an evaluation. These are examples of games created by Year 12 pupils

XAMINATIONS

On 28 March 2012 eight of our pupils undertook the Pre-Vocational Certificate in Oral Communication. This examination comprises the delivery of a four and a half minute illustrated talk, a prepared prose reading, a business telephone call and a question and answer session with the examiner. The results were outstanding with eight achieving distinction grades while the other two entrants were awarded merits.

Emma Armstrong and Megan Crozier also deserve a special mention as they also passed the Entry Level 2 Living in the

Community Oral Examination which had similar demands but with a vocational emphasis. days. It was a struggle at times, as most of it was uphill. However we finished it in the end with a few sore legs (mainly

Miss Domer and Mrs Lennox)!

After the hill walking, we had to work together to build our own tents and even cook our own dinner! We camped overnight. This was the best part.

Everyone was told which tent to sleep in.

There was very little sleep but lots of laughing and talking.

Overall my class really enjoyed this trip and would have loved to have stayed for longer!

The GCSE Performing Arts Showcase, held in the School Assembly Hall on

Wednesday 25 April, was an evening of cultural confetti, with pupils demonstrating their talents in a host of creative disciplines.

The central theme of the evening was

‘Send in The Clowns’ and so each element in the packed programme explored the idea of regret.

There was no shortage of talent on display but let’s not forget those who toiled away back stage and on the piano to make this a night to remember.

Everyone who attended and all who performed had a fantastic evening including Head of Drama, Miss Erskine, who commented, ‘the students worked exceptionally hard in the build up to this showcase. They pulled together as a team and encouraged one another to perform to their best ability. The examiner was extremely impressed and this was indeed reflected in the results of the practical element. Once again Omagh High School students have demonstrated that they are not only talented but diligent in their efforts to reach their full potential.’

Congratulations to Emma Armstrong,

Year 11, on her remarkable achievement in the Special Olympics. Emma won the silver medal in not only the Boccia singles event but also teamed up with another teenager to win the silver medal in the doubles event. It emerged during Emma’s training for the Special Olympics that her experiences in the Active Communities

Boccia project in Omagh High School had helped her to fine tune her skills. In

Omagh High School we are immensely proud of her achievements. presented with our Gold medals and we also got to watch some of the events that were still taking place. We got to visit the

Olympic Swimming pool and also the

Olympic Stadium. All the venues were amazing and I am so glad that I got the chance to play in this tournament and be in the venues where the most famous athletes will be this summer. This is definitely a trip that I will never forget.

All athletes performed and represented the school very well and three of our pupils finished in the top three of their respective events and qualified for the Ulster

Championships which took place on

Saturday 19 May 2012 once again at the

XPERIENCE

I am a Year 14 student currently sitting

A Level exams. I was selected to play for the Under 18 Ulster hockey team that was representing Northern Ireland in the annual Sainsbury's U.K School Games tournament from the 6 - 9 May. This year the games were held in London as the event was being used as a warm up tournament for the 2012 Olympics.

We played three matches over 5 days - our first match was on Sunday against

Wales who we beat 3-0. Later that night it was the Opening Ceremony where

Lord Coe, Tanni-Grey Thompson and

Jonathan Edwards, all famous

Great Britain athletes, spoke to all the athletes about their own Olympic experiences and announced that the

Games were officially started.

Then on the Monday we played the

England Pumas beating them 7-3, and on the Tuesday we played our final match against the second England team, the

England Tigers who we beat 3-1 and so we won the tournament.

We played at Old Loughtonains hockey pitch which has been selected as the

Olympic training venue for the hockey teams in the London 2012 Olympics. This was a great experience playing on what is potentially the pitch where the great athletes like Alex Danson (GB) and

Luciana Aymar (ARG) are going to be training.

On Wednesday, our final day at the games, all athletes were allowed to go to the Olympic Park, where we were

OURSEWORK

The Year 8 pupils had a visit from the

PSNI recently! Don’t worry it’s not as bad as it sounds. Constables Kirk and

Thompson gave a moving and frightening account of the dangers of speed on our roads and then the pupils got the opportunity to try out the very latest equipment, including a brand new motorcycle and some state of the art laser guided speed guns. A most informative and enjoyable visit which really made us think.
