Consider, then answer the following questions about yourself:
-What are your strengths?
-What do you consider to be your talents?
-What are your interests?
-What would you like to be better at?
-What are some interests you have that you are not presently pursuing?
-What is preventing you from pursuing your interests?
We’ll come back to this soon…

Remember those questions you answered a couple of days ago? Well, now
it’s time to get back to them…
Imagine that it is now 10 years later. Write a brief article that you would
like to read in a newspaper, highlighting your success in a particular sport,
hobby, academic field, etc. What makes you extraordinary? How did you
achieve your goals? Who were your influences?

Lewis Carroll’s book, Through the Looking-Glass, and What Alice Found
There, is based on a game of chess, played on a giant chessboard with fields for
squares. Most main characters met in the story are represented by a chess piece,
with Alice herself being a pawn.
The story begins with Alice reading a poem about a horrible monster:
JABBERWOCKY
`Twas brillig, and the slithy toves
Did gyre and gimble in the wabe:
All mimsy were the borogoves,
And the mome raths outgrabe.
And, as in uffish thought he stood,
The Jabberwock, with eyes of flame,
Came whiffling through the tulgey
wood,
And burbled as it came!
"Beware the Jabberwock, my son!
The jaws that bite, the claws that catch!
Beware the Jubjub bird, and shun
The frumious Bandersnatch!"
One, two! One, two! And through and
through
The vorpal blade went snicker-snack!
He left it dead, and with its head
He went galumphing back.
He took his vorpal sword in hand:
Long time the manxome foe he sought -So rested he by the Tumtum tree,
And stood awhile in thought.
"And, has thou slain the Jabberwock?
Come to my arms, my beamish boy!
O frabjous day! Callooh! Callay!'
He chortled in his joy.
`Twas brillig, and the slithy toves
Did gyre and gimble in the wabe;
All mimsy were the borogoves,
And the mome raths outgrabe.
WHAT?!? Go ahead, underline all of the words that seem ridiculous to you.
What could they possibly mean?

Think / write
Now that you’ve been working on your chess strategy for a few weeks, take some
time to reflect on your new knowledge.
So far, I’ve learned…
I really like…
I’m still not sure about…
What was this biggest challenge you’ve had to overcome so far?
What do you think your next big challenge will be?
How do you think you’ll feel when you do have to face that next big challenge?
