2010 Application
This research grant provides funding for research that implements ADA’s Research
Agenda for Dietetics. ADA's Research Agenda for Dietetics presents numerous
research needs. A topic or topics for the Hertzler Grant will be selected by the ADA
Research Committee. Only proposals addressing the selected topic(s) will be
considered for funding. $5,000 is available, but half will be awarded only after a
satisfactory final report has been submitted to ADAF and the ADA Research
Committee.
2008-2012 Research Topic:
The research proposal should address the nutrition care for treatment of children who are
overweight. The seed grant is intended to gather preliminary data to enable further funding.
Projects should focus on implementation of the Evidence-Based Pediatric Weight
Management Nutrition Practice Guidelines. Examples of projects might include (1)
Development and testing supplemental educational/counseling materials (2) Determining
feasibility of use of EBG in diverse populations or settings (3) Focus groups for identification and
evaluation of barriers to implement EBG in a variety of settings, or (4) Development and testing
performance improvement protocols evaluating the implementation of the EBG. As background
information to help frame a potential research project, the applicant should reference the
Evidence-Based Pediatric Weight Management Nutrition Practice Guidelines. The link

The application should also state precisely how this preliminary data will be used to pursue
additional research funds and indicate the specific funding agency and the research concept of
the larger grant to be pursued.
Applicant requirements:
The principal investigator must be an RD or a DTR and a member of ADA.
Instructions:
The following requirements govern the submission of all proposals:
1. The proposed research project must be accomplished within a 12 to 18 month
period.
2. The proposal must include the following components within five single-spaced
pages: introduction, problem statement with reference to the evidence based
analysis library, objectives of the study, procedures, data analysis plan including
statistics beyond percentages, description of available facilities and resources,
timeline and references.

3. The five-page limit must include any additional sections not listed above that the
applicant may submit, such as appendices or tabular materials.
4. Use the attached forms for the application page, biographical sketch and budget.
The applicant may attach up to two additional pages to each biographical sketch.
The application page, biographical sketch pages and budget page are not
counted in the five-page limit. Additional materials such as letters of
recommendation will not be considered and should not be submitted.
5. Five copies of the proposal must be submitted to the American Dietetic
Association Foundation, Grants Program Manager, 120 South Riverside Plaza,
Suite 2000, Chicago, IL 60606-6995. Any questions may be directed to Beth

6. Proposals will be treated as privileged communication. No copies of the proposal
will be returned to the applicant.
7. The completed proposal must be received on or before December 1, 2009.
Applications postmarked by December 1st will be accepted. Proposals will
not be accepted via fax or e-mail.
Scoring:
Proposals will be selected using the following criteria and will be scored based on the
percentage indicated for each criterion:
1. Understanding the research problem, clear problem statement/hypothesis, plan
for using results and likelihood of publication in the Journal of the American
Dietetic Association (20%)
2. Appropriateness of research design, data variable, data collection and analysis
including statistical analysis (30%) and support/relation to evidence based library.
3. Feasibility of conducting research (20%)
4. Appropriateness of budget (10%)
5. Capability of the principal investigator/co-investigators (20%)
