Math ASAP Computation 5.2.1 Two-Digit Divisors Grade Level: 5 Subject: Math Prepared By: TIS Education Standards Addressed 5.2.1 Solve problems involving multiplication and division of any whole numbers. Teacher Guide Engage: Problem of the Day Teacher will introduce the skill with a story problem using long division with 2 digit divisors Explore: Pre-Test Students will begin with Destination Success Math 5.2.1 Two Digit Divisors pre-test. o This test should be assigned to automatically prescribe assignments, and the passing rate should be set to 85-90% Explore: Workouts o o Students with prescribed activities will begin to work on those in Destination. Any student who scores 95%-100% will complete story problem questions involving the skill with higher level thinking skills (i.e. 2 step) or move onto their next pre-test Mr. Rodriguez's class was making tiny hats to put on the lunch trays of all the patients at Mountain Springs Hospital on Make a Hat Day. The food services supervisor told them she would need 255 hats. There are 12 students in the class. How many hats will they each need to make? While students are working on prescribed activities: Walk around lab and pull those students who show lack of understanding. Pull students a few at a time to demonstrate their understanding of this skill to you with several practice problems. Be sure students have paper and pencil to work with while completing the Destination assignment. Teacher Notes Materials Needed Paper Pencil Use http://themathworksheetsite.com/long_division.html to create extra practice problems and/or the posttest. Students working on the Tutorial will also need a copy of the Student Logbook pages. Course III, pages 65-66 and 67-68 for practice on their own when complete. Evaluate All students work through a 10 problem posttest to show their understanding of this skill. Materials Needed 10 problem assessment on long division with 2-digit divisors Extend Each student will complete 10 minutes a day in the school’s computer lab to complete math fact practice using a site recommended by TIS Team Other Resources: 1. Select the number of digits, type in the number of questions desired, and then click the "Submit" button to generate the worksheet. Students can actually submit their answers online and it will grade it for them. Be sure they have paper and pencil. http://interactive.onlinemathlearning.com/division_worksheets.php 2. This online tutorial includes a video with step-by-step practice problems. http://www.onlinemathlearning.com/long-division.html 3. Self-checking word problems. These would be great to present to the whole group, have them work to find answer and then go over together or done independently for practice: Scroll down to Multiplication and Division Challenge Problems at the bottom, then choose a Level. http://mathplayground.com/wpdatabase/wpindex.html You can also assign the Pre-Test to a “test” student and work through the pre-test questions together as a group. Then use logbook, worksheets, and other resources for independent practice. If you feel all students need the most basic level, you can also use the Explore Content button in Destination and work through the Lesson on the projector in the computer lab with the whole group.
