Introducing the Text “I Do It”
Modeling and Teacher Talk: “Today students we will be talking about a comprehension strategy
good readers use. Good readers are able to visualize and make mental pictures in their mind as they
read. Good readers use all of their senses to think about the story, the characters, and the setting –
what it looks like, smells like, tastes like, feels like, and sounds like. As we practice visualizing
today, we will use our background knowledge and combine our schema with new information in the
text to form a clear picture in our mind.”
“I have a picture and I have written two sentences that describe the picture. Close your eyes as I
read the first sentence and use your background knowledge and five senses to visualize what the
picture might be. (1) This is a picture of something sweet. Share with a neighbor what you
visualized in your mind. Close your eyes again and visualize as I read the second sentence. (2) This
is a picture of a huge bowl of cold and creamy vanilla ice cream with a river of hot fudge trickling
out from under a mountain of fluffy whipped cream with a bright red cherry on top.” Show the
picture and ask the students if they were able to visualize something similar to the picture. Ask
students which words made it easier to see the picture. This helps them understand that description
is not only to help them visualize, but to get the picture that you-the author – intend.
Reading the Text “We Do It”
Interacting with and reinforcing strategies and skills: “As we practice using this comprehension
strategy (visualizing) we will be reading together a section from Charlotte’s Web. Before we begin I
want you to use your background knowledge and visualize a barn. Divide your paper in half and
draw a picture of what you see in your mind on the left hand side of the paper. Share with your
neighbor. Why are they different? (Because we all have different background knowledge) Now we
are going to read together. As we read, I want you to use your five senses to visualize and get a clear
picture of the specific barn that the author describes in the story. Draw a picture of what you saw
this time in your mind, on the right side of the paper. Look at the pictures of your neighbors. Do
they look more alike this time? Why? Record on the other side of your paper (paper divided in
fourths) what you see, hear, smell, taste, and feel.”
“Today students we will be practicing another strategy good readers use as we read Dream Weaver.
Good readers read quickly (as they speak) accurately (know the words) and with expression. This
text will also help with our visualizing strategy (read together). Now we will be practicing this as a
Reader’s Theater. I will divide you into groups and your will practice your fluent reading with your
partners. You will remember to read quickly, accurately, and with expression.”
Extending the Reading “You Do It”
Students practicing the strategies taught, rereading for fluency, and extending into writing:
Students will work in groups and perform the Reader’s Theater. They will remember to read
quickly, accurately and with expression.
The students may again complete a “five senses” organizer.
As students read during guided reading and monitored independent reading they are encouraged to
read for fluency and to visualize.
As students write they are encouraged to use those descriptive words that will paint pictures in their
reader’s minds.
Strategies taught in Shared Reading should be gradually released and reinforced in
Guided Reading Groups and Student Independent Practice
