A. Significant Accomplishments
1. Mock Trial Coach 1988-2008
Regional Champions 1988, 1990, 1992, 2007 State Runner-ups 1988, 1990
Mock Trial is a law-related educational program sponsored jointly by
the Administrative Office of the Courts and the Kentucky Bar Association.
Students compete in the roles of attorneys and witnesses. I have coached
approximately 200 students.
2. Teen Court Coordinator 1998-2008
Teen Court is a program sponsored by the Administrative Office of
the Courts based on the influence of positive peer pressure with juvenile
offenders. A district judge presides over all sessions of court. Students
who have received training serve as attorneys, clerks, bailiffs and jury
members. Juveniles who have pled guilty are referred to teen court for a
constructive sentence that I then supervise for compliance. Approximately
seventy juvenile offenders have participated in Teen Court and more than
200 members from five area high schools.
3. Kentucky Teacher Internship Program 1985-2008
I was originally trained to mentor beginning teachers using the
Florida method. After the initiation of KERA, I as trained in the KTIP
program and have recertified as required. I have served as a resource
teacher for thirteen interns.
4. Student Teacher Supervisor
1992-2004
I have supervised
seven student teachers from Morehead State University and one from
Marshall University.
5. School Based Decision Making Council 1995, 1997-2007
I served on the SBDM Council for eleven years and Vice Chair
1997-2007. During my tenure, I chaired the selection committee to
recommend the hiring of two principals. I received training each year as
required by state law through the Kentucky Association of School
Councils.
6. Jury Education Task Force
2005
I served on a task force appointed by then Supreme Court of
Kentucky Chief Justice Joseph Lambert and chaired by Justice James
Keller. Along with other members we developed a training packet on jury
education. I supervised five students in producing the training video.
7. Component Manager
1997-2008
I have served as a component manager in developing the schools
Comprehensive School Improvement Plan and Implementation and Impact
checks. I have chaired committees to disaggregate test data, curriculum
and cultural audits, surveys, etc. to determine the schools needs, prioritize
resources, and develop strategies to promote academic achievement.
8. Southern Association of Colleges and Schools 2001-2009
I have received training in the standards for SACS accreditation.
Recently I served on a SACS review team at Montgomery County High
School in Mt. Sterling, KY and a district accreditation team for
Cumberland County in TN.
9. 2004
Qualified as a highly qualified High School Social Studies teacher
as defined by the No Child Left Behind Act.
10. 2005 Superintendent Search Screening Committee
I was selected by teachers in the school district to serve on this
committee to screen applications and recommend top candidates to the
Board of Education for interviews to fill a vacancy in the Superintendent’s
position.

Served on the Board Policy Committee to Address Field Trips and
Chaperones.

Served on the Board of Education’s Committee for Study/Revision
of Extra-Service Salary Schedule.

American Psychological Association Education Directorate
I participated in a workshop sponsored by the American
Psychological Association and the Teachers of Psychology in Secondary
Schools on “Introducing Students to Psychology: Teaching Tips and
Strategies for the High School Classroom.”

Accountability Testing System Kentucky Core Content Test Item
Development
I was a member of the Content Advisory Committee to develop
test items for the Social Studies portion of the CATS assessment.
15. 2003-2006
Extended School Services (ESS) Coordinator for Boyd
County High School. I supervised approximately twenty teachers and was
administrator for summer school sessions. I also was approved for a
daytime waiver to employee instructors for remedial reading and math.
Each year more than 200 students participated.
16. 2001-2005
Certified Sick Bank Committee
I was elected by the certified staff in the district to serve on the
committee that granted or denied requests for additional sick days from
the bank.
17. 2000-2007
Renaissance Faire
I planned and directed a Renaissance Faire for the school district.
Students from the various content areas presented relevant demonstrations
from the Renaissance era.

District Consolidated Planning Committee
District Strategic Plan Team
I was selected by my peers to represent the high school on this
committee to develop the district’s plan.
19. 1983-2001
Kentucky Junior Historical Society
I served as school sponsor for this club. Membership averaged 30
students each year. We attended the state convention and I had students
qualify and compete at National History Day in 1983, 1986, and 1992.
20. 2000
I was a member of the Instructional Framework Committee for the
Boyd County School District. I participated in the district’s curriculum
audit.
21. 1996-2008 Quick Recall Coach for Boyd County High School
I was certified as a coach and official for this academic
competition. In 1996, 2000, 2001, and 2002 I coached teams that
qualified at Marshall University’s SCORES competition to compete at the
National Quiz Bowl Tournament.
22. 1996-2011 Advanced Placement Teacher
I have taught AP European History, AP United States History, AP
World History, and AP Psychology. My students have demonstrated
competency with a good percentage receiving college credit through the
testing program.

Dual Credit program with Ashland Community College
and Technical Center and Adjunct Professor at Kentucky Christian
College.
I taught HIS 108 (US to 1865) and HIS 109 (US since 1865) for
high school and college credit and Intro to Sociology at KCU.

Elected in district-wide election to serve on the Certified
Employees’ Evaluation appeals Panel.

Credit Recovery Coordinator
I work with the counseling office and administration to provide
opportunities for credit recovery through correspondence courses and an
on-line curriculum offered through Novel Stars. This service is provided
to current students, transfer students and adults who failed to meet
requirements for a diploma

Travel Abroad Sponsor
I organized and chaperoned trips to Europe for students and adults.

National Junior Beta Club/Beta Club Sponsor
I was the sponsor at the middle school and high school levels. I
checked grades for eligibility and monitored grades for probation, and
chaperoned students who attended the state conventions. Each year the
membership averaged 50+.

Senior Class Sponsor.
In this position I was responsible for conducting class elections,
supervising the selection of class shirts and all other activities, producing
the Talent Show, and planning and directing graduation. Each class had
approximately 200 students.
30. 1996 Conrad Feltner Memorial Award
The UK Extension Council grants this award to adult 4-H
volunteers for outstanding service as a leader.

Regional winner and participated at the state level in Bible

Morehead State University
I presented an informative session to students enrolled in the Social
Studies Methods class on the issue of developing out-of-content writing
pieces for inclusion in public school students’ writing portfolios.

I presented a session on using Marzano strategies in the classroom
to Boyd County High School Resource Teachers and their interns.

Parent University
I presented a lecture on the cross curriculum collaboration in
planning and presenting a Renaissance or similar festival as part of a series
of lectures on “Lifelong Advantages of Arts in Education.”

Leadership Institute
I presented a workshop at the Leader Schools Leadership Institute
held in Washington, D.C. on the topic “Meeting Standards through
Service-Learning.” Participation was a result of co-authoring a $100,000
grant that BCHS subsequently received.

Kentucky Teen Court Conference
Led a breakout group for coordinators on strategies for diversions
and using community resources.

National Youth Court Center
I was a participant in the Special Training Session, “Conflict
Resolution Skills for Youth Courts” in Albuquerque, New Mexico.
7. 2000-2001 Conducted workshops on Test Skills and Preparing for the ACT
for students at Boyd County High School.

American Probation and Parole Association
I organized a group of students to present a mock hearing and
participated in a panel discussion on “Implementing and Enhancing Teen
Court Programs” at a seminar in Cincinnati, Ohio.

How To Implement KERA in the Classroom through the use of
Learning Styles
Along with a colleague, I presented the above in-service session
for professional development to faculty members at Boyd County High
School.

Conducted sessions on “Succeeding in High School” for
incoming freshmen and their parents.

In 2005 I participated on a task force that developed a curriculum for jury
studies. The final product was a multi-chapter volume entitled, “The
American Jury—Democracy by the Dozen.”
“Reading to Write” --collaborated with other teachers to publish a book of
lesson plans to incorporate reading and writing in the classroom.

I was selected by a committee of peers to receive this honor in
recognition of commitment and service toward promoting educational

I was selected by members of the Ashland Area DeMolay for this
recognition for educational excellence and efforts to improve my

I was selected twice by the Kentucky Court of Justice to receive
this award based on a demonstration of a dedication for the establishment
of both comprehension and respect for the fundamental principles that
underlie our constitutional democracy.

Northeastern Ky. Quarter Horse Association I served as Points
Secretary, Youth Advisor and President. This organization conducted
horse shows, including register shows through the American Quarter
Horse Association, and raised funds to send a youth team to compete
at the All-American Quarter Horse Show in Columbus, Ohio. During
this time I worked with more than 100 youths.
1989 State coach for the Horse Bowl team’s participation at the Eastern National
4-H Horse Roundup

Member of Rush Baptist Church, Cannonsburg Baptist Church,
Rose Hill Baptist Church and Garner Baptist Church. I have led
the Girls Auxiliary, taught Sunday School and Vacation Bible
School classes, played the piano, sung in the choir, and
participated and facilitated Bible Study classes and many other
activities.
1991-2008
Santa’s Workshop—I have assisted in repairing and acquiring toys
for needy children. The Youth Service Center oversaw distribution.
