University of Jordan Faculty of Agriculture Dept. Horticulture & Crop Science Semester: Course name: Plant Tissue Culture (0641732) Credits: 3 Instructors: Dr. Ayed Al Abdallat Office: Seed technology building, Office No. 1 Office hours: Phone: 535 5000 Ext. 22354 Course Description: This course is designed for graduate students wanting to learn about plant tissue culture. The course is taught in two 75-minute lectures per week with two exams, midterm and final. Grading is based on the exams, oral presentation and laboratory work. Plant tissue culture is the science of growing plant cells, tissues or organs isolated from the mother plant, on artificial media. It includes techniques and methods used to research into many botanical disciplines and has several practical objectives. There is an excellent book specifically about plant tissue culture that has been published recently: Plant Propagation by Tissue Culture (2008). To provide hands-on experience of the most common of these techniques in labs and demonstrations of more advanced or uncommon techniques. Expected outcomes: At the end of the course, you should be able to: disinfest and place into culture suitable explants capable of being cultured and multiplied, make culture medium from reagent grade chemicals and stock solutions, routinely transfer cultures without contamination, and analyze the usefulness of information available from the scientific literature that deals with plant tissue culture.
