To carry out general machinery department technician duties, including maintenance of
machinery and providing support for lecturing staff in the ACF and Horticulture
Academies
To carry out / organise the servicing, repair and maintenance of all College vehicles and
transport equipment (e.g. trailers)

Grade/Salary:
The salary for the post is £16,967 per annum, which is Point 1a on the Instructor scale

37 hours per week with flexibility to meet business needs

Vision:
The College is seeking an enthusiastic and self-motivated Land-based Machinery Instructor and Technician who will
carry out day to day technician duties for land-based machinery department resources. A key responsibility is the
role of Agriculture and Countryside Management Instructor. Some classroom teaching may be required – for
instance when instructing and supervising students in the completion of any write-ups of practical work or
assessments. The successful candidate will be able to operate and maintain modern land-based machinery to a high
standard and have a flexible and positive attitude.
Vocational experience and a minimum of a Level 3 qualification in agriculture, agricultural engineering or a related
subject are essential. Excellent practical skills are essential.
Attention to detail is required alongside the ability to manage your own workload, prioritising tasks effectively. The
role promises a varied and interesting range of duties. The role would suit someone who has worked in industry and
is now seeking a new challenge. Technician duties involve repair, maintenance and preparation of agricultural and
metalwork teaching resources. The role also includes organising and / or carrying out the servicing, repair and
maintenance of all College vehicles and transport equipment (e.g. trailers).
Main Tasks and Duties:
Instructor Role

Instruct groups of students in practical skills and occasionally classroom situations.

Undertake teaching hours as determined by line manager.

To supervise students whilst they participate on training programmes.

To keep any records required (including registers, student assessment portfolios and risk assessments).

Prepare schemes of work, lesson plans and assessment plans.

Teach and complete summative and formative assessment at FE levels 1 – 3 to 14-16, 16 -19 and adults.

Report to KMC staff and parents or carers of learners as necessary.

To set and maintain high levels of industry best practice and animal welfare

To deliver demonstrations, guided tours, and talks for visitors and students.

Participate in planning and reviewing course content in consultation with colleagues within the ethos of
continuous improvement.
Technician Role for AFC
Maintenance, repair and housekeeping:

To perform the day to day activities of the machinery technician as directed by the Section Leads for ACF and
Horticulture and teaching staff from the agricultural departments, particularly with regard to priority tasks that
include:
o
Workshop tools and equipment storage and access arrangements
o
Machine and equipment maintenance
o
Maintaining stocks and inventories, including ordering, storage and access to key consumables such
as drawbar pins, lynch pins, fuel, oil, coolant etc.

General daily technician duties; repair, maintenance and preparation of land-based machinery teaching
resources such as tools and equipment.

To work to maintenance schedules and carry out and organise repairs for the machinery fleet, and work with
the storeperson to ensure that all maintenance that has taken place is recorded using the College’s designated
system (e.g. CAFM).

To look after the machinery workshops, machinery fleet and machinery operating areas, keeping them clean
and tidy. This area of responsibility includes ensuring good housekeeping standards are set and met, machinery,
tool and equipment stores are secure, well stocked and easily accessed by fellow staff.

Prepare and set up materials and equipment for practical teaching sessions and assessment.

To communicate with and support other agricultural machinery teaching staff to ensure an excellent student
learning experience.
Health and Safety:

Carry out risk assessments and keep suitable records for agreed areas of responsibility.

To observe Health and Safety rules for all machinery and workshop operations, including producing and
reviewing risk assessments for all activities.

Monitor health and safety issues and in discussion with the Health and Safety Advisor, implement or amend
practices and procedures to ensure a safe environment for all users of the specialist machinery resources.

Monitor and maintain all equipment associated with health and safety
Record keeping and information availability:

Assist the Storeperson to develop and maintain a comprehensive set of machinery records on the designated
College system that can be accessed by all staff and learners.

Assist the Storeperson to develop and maintain a comprehensive set of machinery operators handbooks that
can also be uploaded to Moodle and be accessed by all learners.
Supervision:

Supervise apprentices, work experience students and those from schools on ‘taster’ sessions.

Participate in delivering regular training sessions for resource users, focusing on health and safety procedures,
risk assessments and standardisation of curriculum delivery.
Other technician duties:

Liaise with and ensure that the specialist machinery resources meet the requirements of all Licensing
Authorities and any other relevant organisations.

Keep abreast of changes in legislation and codes of practice within the industry and discuss implementation of
any necessary changes with the Section Leads for ACF.

Assist with the general development and improvement of all facilities.
Technician Role for Cross-College Transport
Maintenance, repair and servicing:

Perform technician duties such as repair, maintenance, servicing and preparation of vehicles, trailers and other
road-going equipment owned and leased by the college, keeping them clean, tidy, road-worthy and in good
repair. Be responsible for ensuring repairs are carried out in a timely manner. Make sure that the college
obtians good value for money by utilising the most efficient means possible whilst maintaining safety, quality
and accuracy.

Carry out the servicing and safety checks for all college vehicles, trailers and other road-going equipment. To
work to maintenance schedules and carry out or organise repairs for all College Transport vehicles and
equipment as per these schedules, and support the Storeperson in recording all maintenance that has taken
place using the College’s designated system (CAFM). To communicate with all staff that use College transport
vehicles, trailers and other road-going equipment to ensure an excellent and safe student learning experience.
 Ensure subcontractors complete all works to a high standard, on budget and on time.
 Support the Storeperson in implementing and managing key collection / vehicle collection and return
arrangements for all staff that have a need for college vehicles.
Health and Safety:
 Carry out risk assessments and keep suitable records for agreed areas of responsibility.
 To observe Health and Safety rules for all College vehicles, trailers and other road-going equipment.
 Monitor health and safety issues and in discussion with the Health and Safety Advisor implement or amend
practices and procedures to ensure safe use of all College vehicles, trailers and other road-going equipment.
 Monitor and maintain all equipment associated with transport health and safety
 Provide Senior Management Team and Health & Safety Officer with regular updates on vehicle and equipment
purchasing requirements and concerns regarding transportation issues
Record keeping and information availability:
 Assist the Storeperson in developing and maintaining a comprehensive set of maintenance, servicing and repair
records on the designated College system (CAFM) that can be accessed by all staff.
 Assist the Storeperson in developing and maintaining a comprehensive set of operators’ handbooks that can be
accessed by all staff.
Other technician duties:
 Liaise with and ensure that the college vehicle fleet meets the requirements of all Licensing Authorities and any
other relevant organisations.
 Keep abreast of changes in any relevant legislation and codes of practice and discuss implementation of any
necessary changes with the relevant work area manager.
 Assist with the general development and improvement of all College transport resources and systems.
 Work with relevant Work Area Managers and Deputy Principal (Finance & Corporate Servi ces) making sure that
the college obtains good value for money through utilising the most efficient means possible when purchasing
transport related products and services. Responsibilities include identifying opportunities for cost reduction.
 Work with main suppliers to seek out new opportunities with manufacturers that wish to work directly with the
college. Build relationships with suppliers and manufacturers.
 Communicate with all teaching and support staff when vehicles / machinery / transportation need to be
purchased, renewed, or disposed of and providing updates on replacement and timescales. Listening to concerns,
recommendations and suggestions.
 Work closely with other key members of staff to ensure procedures and processes are both accurate and up to
date, ensuring consistency and continual improvement.
 Contribute to any review of the College management system

Terms and Conditions:

This is a permanent appointment.

The Contract of Employment will be based on the provisions of the Kingston Maurward Support Staff Contract.

The salary for this post is £16,967 per annum, which is Point 1a of the Instructor scale.

Working Hours will be 37 per week during Monday to Friday with flexibility to meet business needs.

The annual leave entitlement will be 25 working days to be taken during the period 1 September to 31 August
plus agreed Statutory Bank Holidays and College closure days.

The appointment is subject to the satisfactory completion of a 9-month Probationary Period with reviews after 2,
5 and 9 months.

The notice period will be two month on either side.

Membership of the Local Government Final Salary Pension Scheme is available.

The appointment is subject to the College receiving satisfactory references.

The successful candidate is required to advise whether they are aware of any health condition or disability which
might impair their ability to effectively undertake the duties of the position as outlined above. This disclosure
may result in a referral to the Occupational Health Advisor for a medical clearance prior to commencing
employment.
