Poultry slam 2014
Using your chicken foot as a functioning prop, present a short
‘teaching video’ – which includes the following elements:
 Creative explanation/demonstration of:
o How to identify a tendon in all that mess of muscle,
skin, and fatty tissue
o What ligaments do and where we find them
o What is the role of cartilage
 Short song / jingle (sung by one or more members of your
group)
 Told from the chicken’s point of view….
 How muscles work in pairs to allow our bodies to move
WINGing it…
It’s hard to believe but your arm is very similar to a chicken wing!!
Show & Tell!!!
During the lab, you and your
partner will need to respond to all
questions labeled “Show & Tell”…it
will be up to you to decide how you
will do this – using pictures, video
clips, Keynote, IMovie, etc…
answers should be clear and
concise with appropriate visual
support
Show & Tell!!!
What are the similarities between your arm and a chicken wing?
Show & Tell!!!
What are the differences between your arm and a chicken wing?
DISSECTING THE WING!

CUT the wing skin, using scissors, from the shoulder to the lower wing (don’t cut the
muscle!)

PEEL the skin off the wing

The wing should look similar to the picture below:

IDENTIFY the fat on the inside of the skin (yellow greasy solid)
Show & Tell!!!
Identify (label) the fat in your visual

SEPARATE the muscles into the different groups (use your fingers)

PULL on each muscle to see how it makes the wing move

USE several muscle groups and see if you can get the wing to punch or wave!!!
Show & Tell!!!
 IDENTIFY (LABEL) the biceps and triceps and demonstrate how the two muscles work together to
create movement

RESPOND the questions below in your show & tell:
Show & Tell!!!
When the biceps are stretched, what is happening to the triceps?
Show & Tell!!!
When the triceps are stretched, what is happening to the biceps?

CUT all the tendons (attach muscle to bone) around the elbow and pull away the muscles.

PULL slowly on the bones to make a small gap in the elbow

CUT the ligaments (attach bone to bone) to separate the joint

FEEL the cartilage (at end of bone) in the joint where the bones touch

The wing should look similar to that below:

Show & Tell!!!
Label the tendons, bones, ligaments, and cartilage on your visual
FEETs of strength…
There are few things in this world as exciting as dissecting a chicken foot – again, we are making
comparisons between the structures we share in common with the chicken….and making the
world famous Chicken Foot Puppet !!
Show & Tell!!!
Look at the exposed joint where your chicken foot was cut from the chicken – what
type of joint is this? What joint is it most similar to on the human body?
 CUT down the length of the skin of the foot to expose the tendons that control the
feet and toes. DO NOT CUT the tendons! You will need these to operate the foot for
your puppet show
 PULL OUT the tendons from the skin so you can get a solid grip.
Show & Tell!!!

Steady the knee joint and use the tendons to manipulate the toes – DEMONSTRATE
how the tendons move the foot and toes
