Order: Artiodactyla. Family: Bovidae. Physical Description Its name refers to the black color of the male's coat. Males are about 9 feet long with a shoulder height of 4 feet. The male weighs about 500 pounds and is 20 percent larger than the female. The male's coat is dark brown to black with white under parts, while the female and young males have rich russet coats. Both male and female have stout, scythe-like ringed horns that grow to a length of 20-60 inches and both have stiff manes. It has large ears, large eyes and a keen sense of hearing, vision and smell. Order: Carnivora. Family: Canidae. Physical Description This is a medium sized canine with a head and body length of 30-40 inches, and a white-tipped tail of 12-16 inches. It weighs 40-80 pounds. Its coat is colored with blotches of black, white and orange or yellow; however, the tip of the tail is almost always white and the muzzle is always black. The body is thin and muscular and the head is powerful with strong jaws and sharp, shearing teeth. It is an excellent runner and has great endurance. Vision is its most important sense as it's used for locating prey. Order: Primata. Family: Cercopithecidae. Physical Description This is the smallest of its species and measures up to 27 inches in length. The tail can be as long as 22 inches. The male weighs about 50-90 pounds, and the female weighs about 28-50 pounds. Its coat is evenly colored reddish brown with red naked skin on the rump area. It has a long dog-like snout with impressive canine teeth. Its hind limbs are longer than its fore limbs. The male has a mantle of fur around the head and is noticeably larger than the female. It is found in the African countries of Senegal, Mauritania, Gambia, Guinea and Sierra Leone. Physical Description This is the second largest living bird, next to the ostrich. It is flightless and, like the ostrich, it has a flat sternum that does not allow for anchoring flight muscles. It does have wings, but they are small. Its height averages 5.25-6.25 feet, with females larger and heavier than males. It can weigh up to 100 pounds and have long and strong legs with tree-toed feet and short and strong claws. The feathers are brownish black with a hairy and drooping appearance that is visibly "parted" in the middle down the center of the back. The head and long neck have few feathers and there are bare spots on their sides. It can be found throughout most of Australia. Adult males may be more than 8 ft. long and weigh about 150 pounds. Females may be up to 7 feet long and weigh about 100 lbs. Adults typically have a tan-colored coat, but the color can range from a grayish to dark brown. They also have small heads and small, rounded ears that are black on the back. The most recognizable feature is the long, heavy, black-tipped tail, which measures almost two-thirds the length of the head and body! They have extraordinary vision and are remarkably fast. Order: Phoenicopteriforme. Family: Phoenicopteridae. Physical Description This species is the most brightly colored and largest of all of its kind. It is a scarlet pink color overall and has black primary feathers. The bill is downward bending at its midpoint. It has a large body and flexible long neck topped with a small head. The long legs and feet are bare, and the toes are webbed, which is good for wading. Young birds are mostly grey and do not develop their characteristic pink until after the first year. It is found in the Caribbean, part of Central America, northeastern South America and in the Galapagos Islands. Location: Carnivore Kingdom 7) ________ _________________ Zoo Names Sparkler and Madan Physical Description This animal is small with an overall length of 3 to 3 ½ ft. and weighs about 10 to 12 lbs. Its coat is soft, dense and long with a thick under fur. Its face is light with dark markings. Rust-red stripes beneath each eye separate the white snout from white cheeks. The ears are large, upright, pointed and tapered with a white spot on the inside. It has a long tail that is bushy and reddish-brown with distinctly separate pale reddish rings, which it uses to cover its face and keep its nose warm in the cold. For tree climbing, it has razor-sharp claws. The soles of its feet are protected with wooly hair that helps to reduce heat loss and the danger of slipping on wet branches. Its large mouth has 38 teeth and powerful jaws used for crushing one of its favorite foods. It is considered a carnivore even though it usually eats bamboo. The word "carnivore" has two meanings. Literally, it means "meat-eater"; however, the word is also used to group all the varieties of dogs, bears, cats, raccoons, ferrets and hyenas. Its native habitat is in Asia from Nepal into Southwest China. Location: Primate Reserve 8) __________________ _____________ Zoo Names Jasmine, Shamrock, Logan, Reagan, and Iris Physical Description These are generally considered small primates and have large eyes and a long, slim muzzle. These adorable animals have gray to brown fur on their body, with white fur on their stomachs, face and ears. They have brown eye patches and a long, blackand-white striped tail. They can weigh up to seven pounds and grow to 17 inches in length. Their tails can grow to be up to two feet long. This species is found only in Madagascar. Physical Description This little animal has a weight of 1.2-1.5 lbs. and a length of about 11 in. Its tail length is around 13 in. The fur ranges from a pale gold to a rich reddish-gold color with black markings on the tail and feet. It has long, narrow hands and feet, and elongated fingers as long as its forearms! Unlike most other primates it has claws, rather than flat nails, except the big toe. Claws enable the animals to cling to vertical trunks and branches. It can only be found in the State of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Location: Reptile and Amphibian House 10) ___________ ____________ ___________ Scientific Name Litoria caerulea Classification--Class: Amphibia. Order: Anura. Family: Hylidae. Physical Description The skin has a waxy cuticle that helps prevent water evaporation allowing it to survive in drier conditions. The skin has many perforations of skin glands that also keep it moist. It is bright green in color or a mixture of green and bronze, often with scattered white spots on the sides. Often white stripes or series of spots are found from the angle of the mouth to the forearm. Its pupil is horizontal and the iris is pale. The upper part of the lower eyelid is transparent and colorless. Its fingers are one-third webbed with the second finger longer than the first. Its toes are about onehalf webbed. It can be found in trees in the provinces of Western Australia (northern portion), Northern Territory, Queensland, South Australia and New South Wales. It is also found in southern New Guinea. 11) ___________ ____________ Physical Description The body of this reptile is heavy and stocky with a large head, widespread legs and a stumpy tail. It uses its short tail for fat storage during the winter months. An adult can reach up to 21 inches in length and weigh up to five pound, making it one of the largest lizards found in the United States. It is different than most other lizards in appearance. Its scales are small and rounded and overlap like most other reptiles, but are also very vibrant in color and pattern. Its body is a blend of black, yellow, pink or orange spots. Like a snake, it uses its fork-like tongue to pick up the scent of its prey. Its venom is poisonous, although its bite is not fatal to humans. It lives in the deserts of the southwestern United States and Mexico. 12) ___________ ____________ Zoo Names Mopey, Mommy, Li’le Girl; Scientific Name Geochelone nigra nigrita Classification--Class: Reptilia. Order: Chelonia. Family: Testudinidae. Physical Description Males weigh approximately 500 pounds, and females are about 250 pounds. Not only are the males generally larger than the females, but they also have relatively longer tails. They are typically an overall dull black color, and they have paler, pink skin around the head and throat. Their lower jaws are covered by horny ridges with serrated edges that help them cut through tough plants. They have large scales on their legs that act as protective devices when they withdraw. Their foot bones are structured to facilitate walking, and their pillar-like legs with unwebbed feet help support their weight. These reptiles are found only on the islands they are named for, in the Pacific Ocean, straddling the equator just due west of Ecuador, South America.
