THANK YOU, HAT MONSTER Module Me, My Family and Friends Unit My Favourite Things Key Stage Targets (KS1) To develop an ever-improving capability to use English to obtain and provide objects and information in simple classroom situations and through activities such as interactive games and role-play (I.D.e) to recognize and solve simple problems in given situations (K.D.d) to develop an awareness and an enjoyment of basic sound patterns of English in imaginative texts through activities such as participating in action rhymes and singing songs (E.D. a) Programme Outline In this programme, we are going to meet a new friend Hat Monster. Hat Monster, as his name suggests, loves hats. So he has got many hats. He has got many friends too. One lovely morning, Hat Monster joins his friends, Ada, Sally, Jack and Daniel to play under the mulberry tree. They enjoy singing and miming actions in the song “Round and Round the Mulberry Bush”. You will also meet Father Rabbit, Mother Rabbit and Little Rabbit, Robert as well as Robert’s teddy bear. The Rabbit family has got many friends such as Mr Baker, Mr Postman, Mr Fireman, Nurse Daisy and Mr Sailor in the animal village. One day a strong wind comes to their village and blows away their hats! So all of them run after their hats. And the wind has brought the hats to Hat Monster and his friends. Hat Monster is very happy to get five hats! Where do the hats come from? The children ask. Now, Hat Monster has to find out whom the hats belong to. Communicative Functions 1. Talk about personal possessions 5. Respond to and give simple instructions Pre-viewing Activities 1. Introduce Hat Monster and the song “Round and Round the Mulberry Bush”. Please see COPYMASTER 1 for the lyrics. 2. Review or introduce the actions in the song to the children. The actions include: “brush our teeth”, “wash our face”, “comb my hair” and “wear my hat”. For motivation, ask the class to mime and guess the actions. 3. Draw the pupils’ attention to the use of “my”. In the programme, Hat Monster likes his hats. So he says, “I like my hats.” Ada likes her teddy bear, so she says, “I like my teddy bear.” Invite the pupils to tell the personal possessions that they like using 1 4. 5. the structure, “I like my ____.” Also draw their attention to the use of “your”. When the wind blows away Mr Baker’s hat, Mr Sailor asks Mr Baker, “Where is your hat?” For motivation, draw the hats of a policeman, a baker, a postman, a sailor and a nurse. Ask the class to guess the names of the occupations. While-viewing Activities 1. Read Aloud Together While watching the programme, these words will be read out a second time, ask the pupils to repeat after the voice over: My My teddy bear My hats Ada: “It’s my teddy bear, I like my teddy bear.” Hat Monster: “I like my hats.” 2. Sing a song When pupils are watching the programme, ask them to sing along the song, “Round and Round the Mulberry Bush.” COPYMASTER 1 3. Read aloud and answer together The pupils will hear Hat Monster and the children ask the animals, “Is this your hat?” Ask the pupils to answer together with the animals “Yes, it is.” OR “No, it isn’t.” Post-viewing Activities 1. Think and Guess : There is one small hat. Who does the hat belong to? Answer: Robert’s teddy bear. 2. Change the words in the song “Round and Round the Mulberry” Ask the pupils to change some of the actions in the song e.g. wash my hands: “This is the way I wash my hands, wash my hands …” Sing and mime the action. 3. Look at the table. Ask the pupils to tick the things that Hat Monster, Ada and they themselves like.
