Verbs- a verb is a word that refers to an action or a state. At
least one verb must be included in every sentence.
Types of verbs:
Action verb- a verb that tells what action someone or something is
performing. An action verb may show mental action as well as visible action.
Categories of action verbs:
Transitive verb- an action verb that directs action toward someone or
something.
Ex.: Mr. LoGalbo shot the basketball.
(What is receiving the action of shot….basketball)
Intransitive verb- an action verb that does not direct action toward someone
or something.
Mr. LoGalbo shot well during his basketball game.
(The action shot is not directed toward anything.)
Linking verb- a linking verb is a verb that connects a word at or near the
beginning of a sentence with a word at or near the end.
Ex.: Mr. LoGalbo was happy with the class.
(The linking verb “was” is linking Mr. LoGalbo to the adjective happy)

Helping verb- a helping verb is a verb that can be added to another verb to
make a single verb phrase.
Ex.: The class will know all of the vocabulary words by the end of the quarter.
(The verb will is added to the verb know to make the verb phrase will know…will is
“helping” the verb know).
