Course Description:
This course is designed to assist students in planning and pursuit of their
own career goals. Students will be provided with an introduction to the health care industry emphasizing
the roles of the various health care professionals and the current trends in healthcare opportunities. The
course investigates the wide variety of health care careers, focusing on the nature of the work, job
descriptions, necessary abilities, legal and ethical responsibilities, medical terminology, vital signs, and
education preparation and credentialing. An opportunity to interface with health care professionals and
explore one or more options in depth will be provided.

Intended Outcomes (What do we want you to learn?):
Upon the completion of this class using “Required Learning Core Concepts” and required
assignments, the learner will
1. Identify the basic professions, each profession’s core function, job descriptions, and roles
of healthcare professionals in a healthcare organization with 70% accuracy on the final
exam.
2. Explore three professions in the health care field and identify the program of study
necessary to achieve each career goal regarding education, licensure, and legal requirements
as demonstrated by completed of the Exploration Module with 70% accuracy.
3. Describe the structure, function, and design of typical healthcare organizations with 70%
accuracy on the homework assignment “Healthcare Organizations”.

1. Describe health care organizations, their structure, function, and design.
2. Identify the healthcare professions including the job description and roles of the various
health care professionals.
3. Compare healthcare professions regarding educational/licensure requirements, functions,.

5. Identify personal interests, skills, values and compare them with several career options.
6. Develop a tentative career plan.

Health Science Program Choices Choose Three Options for In-depth Exploration
Have some hands on fun on the Gulf Coast Community College Campus. In the first question,
choose three programs that you would like to explore a career option in more detail.
Program Dates for 2008 Summer B:
1. Nursing Date is July 16th from 8-12 Noon in the Nursing Lab (Portable building) on
campus.
