Money, money, money …
The topic for today is ‘’ payroll administration’’.
Task 1
Read the text below to get the general idea:
Payroll administration is all about employees’ and employers’ money
being paid correctly and on time. It encompasses all the tasks involved in paying
salaries, calculating costs, deducting payments, adding benefits and counting
taxes. The range of operations depends both on the size of each company and on
the number of people employed. The scope of company’s activities and its
particular needs also play a vital role, since there might be for instance,
employees who receive commissions along with their regular salaries.
Handling payroll-related issues involves a lot of accuracy and
meticulousness. A payroll administrator needs to be very diligent, wellorganized, careful and detail-oriented in keeping records of hours worked,
calculating overtime, adding bonuses to paychecks, tax filing and assigning
exempt or non-exempt status to workers. It is therefore their full responsibility to
be as precise as possible in terms of numbers and applicable law regulations.
Payroll administration can be either simplified, if it involves only a
handful of employees, or quite complex, if it includes thousands of workers and
contractors/ suppliers. In small companies payroll duties can be handled by the
owner or just one employee, but in bigger organizations an integrated and
efficient system of people and software is required to serve particular purposes
of each individual.
Some businesses choose to handle payroll-related tasks in-house, by
setting up a separate department inside the company, others decide to use
outsourcing as the best possible solution. Then, they rely heavily on external
professionals doing the job for them who my even offer extra on-site help or
additional expert consultations.
Efficient and effective payroll processing is crucial for every single
operating business since it ensures that correct payments are delivered on time
to employees and taxes are paid accordingly.
