Project Description

Background
Chris is a high school drop-out turned electrician soon to be graduating with a Bachelor of Science in
Information Technology with a concentration in Business Systems Analysis (BSiT/BSA) from the
University of Phoenix. Jesse has a past as a network technician and is a former member of the Air
Force soon to be graduating with a Bachelor of Science in Computer Engineering from the University
of New Mexico.
Chris is the electrician in the field that was able to identify an area that could use improvement, such
as material logistics and management. Jesse is the engineer with the necessary programming skills
to put the project into motion. These two were able to combine and use experience, passion,
ambition, and skill to formulate and implement a plan to design an application that accomplished the
task.

Description of the challenge or opportunity
Challenges:




How to set-up an Integrated Development Environment (IDE) such as the ANDOID Software
Development Kit (SDK)
Developing the Graphical User Interface (GUI) and logic for the application
Gathering and organizing specific information about general material most commonly used by
electrical contractors.
Formatting selected application output that is universally comprehensible by suppliers

Opportunities:




To save the electricians in the field time making material lists
To save the supplier from receiving un-clear material orders
To save electrical contractors time and money from receiving the wrong material
To save suppliers time and money from delivering the wrong material

Overview of the desired impact
To use suppliers as the marketing vessel to target electricians and improve the way construction
material is ordered to make the job go smoother.
Measurable Organizational Value (MOV)

Project’s overall goal and measure of success
The goal is to streamline construction material logistics by eliminating miscommunication between
suppliers and electrical sub-contractors
 What elements of the project provide value to the organization?
The ease of material identification and selection for electricians
The unambiguous request for quotes that are produced by the application
 ROI (return on investment) and cost versus benefit
The ROI is expected to tower the initial investment due to the minimal initial investment
 Statement or table format
Project Scope
 What will be included in the scope of this project?
The design, development, quality testing, marketing and sales of the Order Genie mobile application
 What will be considered outside the scope of this project?
The Order Genie server side database and website
 What are the project’s main deliverables?
The main deliverable for this phase of the project is to develop and release a functioning stand-alone
copy of the application available for download at the Google Play store.
 Provide a statement and description.
Project Schedule Summary
 Project start date
July 5th, 2014
 Project end date
June 1st, 2014
 Timeline of project phases and milestones
Milestones

 Budget broken down by phase
This project requires minimal initial investment.
Quality Issues

Specific quality requirements

Must be easy to use even for people not familiar with navigating smartphones or tablets

Must produce an easily readable Request for Quote (RFQ) on a material order including
necessary manufacturer descriptions, part numbers, pictures, and other distinguishing
characteristics.

Current Gasoline and Diesel Fuel Prices
Insurance Rates on F-650 trucks and similar model flatbed trucks typically used to transport electrical
materials to job-sites
 Key risks, probability of occurrence, and impact
The initial investment for this particular project is not substantial, therefore the financial risk is virtually
nonexistent. However the risk remains of someone beating us to the punch or creating a similar product.
 Organizational or time constraints
The time constraints that restrict this project from moving forward as of right now are conflicting work
and school schedules by bother Co-Founders. After the Co-Founders are through with school there
will be more time to focus on the application.
 Risks of not doing this project
Somebody else does it and is a success
 Assess dependencies on other projects or areas within or outside the organization
 Assessment project’s impact on the organization
Request reports from suppliers from prior months or years in comparison to when the application
started being used.
 Outstanding issues
The maximum APK file size for the Google Play store is 50MB. We are still unsure if the data and
pictures are going to exceed this limitation for a stand-alone application.
 Formulation of key project risk mitigation strategies
The key to project risk mitigation is to keep the application under tight wraps until it is secured a
position in the market.
Project Administration


Communications plan
Scope management plan
o The change control process
Change control shall be administered by both Co-Founders equally
 Quality management plan
Quality management for Order Genie happens iteratively. After each change is made to the
application it is tested for quality.
o
Testing procedures related to the implementation
 Change management plan
Both Co-Founders shall discuss it and come to an agreement before any changes are made final.
 Human resources plan
As of right now there is not a Human Resources (HR) plan in place for this project as it is not
applicable.
Implementation and Continued Maintenance and Project Closure Plan
 What data or existing format will need to be changed?
Eventually the stand-alone SQLite database imbedded into the application will move to a server side
database that will then pull data from the database dynamically to display in app.
 What production systems will be handled?
 What downtime will be needed?
 How will the integration be communicated?
 How will the new system be deployed (pilot, phased, parallel, plunge, and so on)?
