President Scott’s Message

Happy Spring Everyone! As I watch the last snow of the season fall, I see green grass take root as the golf committee gets their wheels moving and the club excited about our largest fund raiser.

Presently we have a core of

8 members actively involved, with committees and duties assigned. To make this event fun and a success we need at least another 15 members so don't hold back. We're looking to have everything completed at least one week prior to the event so don't wait to volunteer until the last minute!

The Key Club did a wonderful job at their regional event, with more to come from Ron. It's just amazing to see their talent and leadership! The

Builder's Club had their yard sale, bingo night and now they are planning numerous other events. What a tremendous group of young leaders. No wonder they excel when they get to the Key Club. We held a tremendous Community Leaders event in April, with over 140 people in attendance and great community business support. This team of volunteers numbered roughly 18 (22% of the club), truly gave of themselves to pull this off. If you were at the event you recognized our success when each nominee spoke. The emotion in their voices and eyes highlighted how much these awards mean to them. Great job Kiwanians! On April 20, our

Lieutenant Governor Ron Dion welcomed

Governor Ron Sanville, to the Division 7 meeting hosted by Hooksett Kiwanis. There were roughly

100 Kiwanians from all over the Division. There was good mixing by the Hooksett members with the various clubs. I really want to thank all those in attendance. The number from Hooksett was overwhelming and you really showed the pride of the club and respect for our Lieutenant Governor!

Thank you for what you do!

Family Membership begins on May 1, 2011.

After several years of research the Kiwanis

International Board has approved a 5-year pilot for

Family Membership in the New England District of

Kiwanis. The pilot will continue for 5 years, at which time it is expected to become permanent and rolled out to other parts of the Kiwanis world. With

Family Membership, the first member at each address will continue to pay $115.00 in annual dues to Hooksett Kiwanis. Up to three additional members residing at the same address will pay only

$50.00 in annual dues. Family members only need to be at least 18 years of age and reside at the same address. A legal relationship (relative) is not required. Although the majority of family members are expected to be spouses, children and others residing at the same address are eligible. A son or daughter away at college or in the military also qualifies. We encourage our members to invite their spouses and other household members to consider becoming Hooksett Kiwanians. As with all new members, there is a one-time application fee of

$25, with dues prorated through September 30.

Central High Key Club by Editor Devon Dunn

Wow, how time has flown by. As I was writing my final article, I read over the first article I wrote for

Kiwanis. Our Key Club had recently thrown our annual Summer Barbeque, a successful car wash, and held our Strategic Year

Planning Meeting. I was entering my final summer before high school, and was very excited. I know it seems cliché but all the excitement and anticipation seemed as if it were only yesterday.

It also seems impossible that myself, and the rest of seniors on our Key Club’s Board of Directors just recently returned from our final District Convention. This

DCON was certainly a great one to be sent off on.

Our club won the greatest number of awards we have won yet, making us a highly esteemed group.

Our success includes 2 nd place for the Service

Poster, 1 st place for Kiwanis Family Relations, 1 st place Kiwanis advisor, Brian Tassey as Outstanding

Board Member of the Year, 1 st place for Single

Service Project, 2 nd place in Annual Achievement for Platinum level clubs, and several more. Several tears were shed at the Closing Ceremony where our own Paolo Mauricio said his last words as the New

England Key Club Governor. This year’s convention was a very proud time for all of us, and one that we will not soon forget.

Previous to DCON, our club held a pancake breakfast at Applebee’s to help fund our trip. The

Manchester Central Key Club managed to raise over a $1000 at this event making it one of our most successful fundraisers ever. Because of this event, other fundraising efforts, and a generous donation from Kiwanis, our trip to District Convention cost close to nothing to our club’s treasury. Although

3 our trip was delayed by a snow day, we all still had an incredible time.

On a closing note, I would like to thank all of

Kiwanis for everything you all do. Without

Kiwanis, our Key Club could not even dream of achieving half of what we have. Being a part of Key

Club and serving as club editor has helped develop my communication skills, inspiring my decision to pursue a career in communications and major in

Film & Television. Kiwanis has showed me personally that I would like to continue to integrate service into my life as I enter the adult world. This organization has showed over 200 students at my school that they can make a difference too. Kiwanis is an organization that will not only always hold a special place in my heart, but in a great number of my peers’ as well. I trust that your support will continue to change lives even after our class has moved on. Thank you!

Community Leaders Event a Huge Success

Over 140 attendees gathered on April 9 at Southern

NH University for the second annual Community

Leaders Recognition event. They heard about the positive contributions by seven local citizens and business organizations to support the Hooksett community in 2010. Tom Young, President-elect of

High School senior

Scarpetti presented the

Anne Mulligan. She has been a mentor and driving

force in many activities and roles including Anti-

Bullying & Career Guidance Education Classes, and, working with individuals in crisis situations.

Kiwanis member Sid Baines presented the

Municipal Employee of the year Award to Bruce

Kudrick. He highlighted Bruce’s many contributions over his 38 years of service.

Kiwanis Lt. Governor Ronald Dion presented the

Small Business of the Year Award to Profile Self thanks committee members, other Kiwanis members, sponsors and the community at large for making this second annual event a huge success. In addition to providing well-deserved recognition, the event raised about $5,500 for our work within the

Hooksett community. Please reserve Saturday

April 21 for the 2012 event!

Governor’s Official Visit Another Success

On April 20, about 100 Kiwanians and guests gathered at the Dining Center at SNHU for the annual Governor’s visit to Division 7 of the New

England District. All seven clubs within the division attended: Claremont, Concord, Hooksett,

Hudson, Manchester, Salem and Upper

Valley/Lebanon. This was the largest turnout in years for the Governor’s visit to Division 7.

Representatives of all seven clubs gave a brief update of recent service projects and fund-raisers.

Storage. During 2010 Profile donated $14,000 in free storage space to various community organizations. Kiwanis Board member Frank

Kotowski presented the Hooksett Large Business of the Year Award to GE Aviation. In addition to employing over 700 employees, the Company gives back tremendously to the community both financially and with volunteerism. The Small

Business of the Year Award was presented by

Hooksett Town Administrator Carol Granfield to

Stephen Singer, President of Merchants

Motors. Carol related how Singer exemplifies an ideal business leader by not only operating and representing a successful family business but by showing an exceptional commitment to the communities it serves.

Each recipient received a specially designed heavy glass Leadership award along with certificates from

Governor Lynch, the NH Senate and Hooksett

Kiwanis. As chair of this year’s event, Fred Bishop

Fifteen members from the Central Key Club talked about the many awards that they received at the NE

District Educational Conference. Three members of the Builders Club at Cawley School provided an update on their recent accomplishments. The 2010-

2011 Key Club Governor Paolo Mauricio, from

Lt. Governor Ron Dion from Hooksett Kiwanis introduced Governor Ron Sanville from Hardwick

Vermont. In his remarks, Governor Sanville talked about the many initiatives underway within the

New England District to bring us back to basics and grow our membership. These include bringing

Kiwanis education and training to local clubs and divisions, and enhanced quality of communication and conferences focused on improving Kiwanis at the local level. He indicated that based on current trends, New England is expected to increase its membership this year. Sanville is a licensed auctioneer and put his skills to work with a lively auction. Over $340 was raised for the Governor’s favorite charity, the Kiwanis Foundation of New

England. At the close of the meeting Ron Dion presented Governor Sanville with a granite block in the shape of New Hampshire.

Hooksett Community Food Pantry (HCFP) by Tracy Murphy-Roche

Shaw’s continues to support us with daily donations of baked goods and providing a collection area in front of the store for their shoppers to make donations.

Shaw’s is also partnering with Pepsi and Frito-Lay on a new fundraiser. Pepsi and Frito-Lay, will donate 1% of their product sales until May 19 up to a maximum of

$750.

Hannaford also continues with their weekly support of the Pantry by offering a collection area in front of their Bicentennial D. store. The Pantry continues to be the beneficiary of many donations. This month we received monetary donations John &

Dorothy Hybsch and the Hooksett Grange. Wayne

Gould of Aerial Crane donated 50 hams and

Bisquick. We also received a very generous donation of bread from our friends at First

Assembly of God.

Stamp Out Hunger, a project of the National Association of

Letter Carriers, is the Nation’s largest single day food drive & is being held on Saturday, May

14 th . If you or someone you know has some free time and wants to have fun, please call Barb Brennan and sign up. Barb can be reached at the Pantry, 603.485.7222. Remember, many hands make light work.

On April 12, Fred Bishop, Tom Young, Tracy

Murphy Roche, David Scarpetti met with Town

Administrator, Carol Granfield to discuss problems within the Food Pantry and Kid’s Kloset sorting room. The Pantry has already outgrown its space at the Town Offices. In addition there may be potential access/egress issues if the Town rents the kitchen to an outside party. Carol will look into this matter and will get back to Tom Young within the next three weeks.

We are now a collection site for Box Tops for

Education, and have notified our clients by including a handout in all orders encouraging (not requiring) them to participate in the collection. We look forward to giving back to our community! If you are looking for a place to serve, please consider spending your time volunteering at the Pantry.

Special thanks to Barbara Brennan for her continued commitment and dedication to the

Pantry. Barb works tirelessly to improve the Pantry in order to better serve our clients. She shops, manages food drives, she does it all. Thanks Barb!

Kiwanis Kid’s Kloset by Joan McDonald

The monthly open house was April 4. About 50 cards went out and there were 16 families with over

40 children. Over 300 pieces were taken. The next open house is Monday, May 2 nd. . Due to limited storage, we have separated the winter clothes to keep for another season and passed the rest along to other agencies.

With the larger turnout at Open Houses, we are running into a bit of a problem with children running around and becoming a bit rowdy. It is difficult for the parents to pick out clothes and watch the kids. Some of the children do not respond well when asked by Kiwanis volunteers to stop running or keep out from under the racks. We will make up some signs asking parents to watch their children so that we can help them pick out clothes that fit.

On April 12, we met with Town Administrator,

Carol Granfield to discuss problems within the

Food Pantry (see Food Pantry article) and the Kid’s

5

Kloset sorting room. We suggested moving the sorting room back to the previous location. Carol later informed us that we could move back to the prior room. Deb Campbell met with us to see if some of the shelving that GE Aviation has can be retrofitted to the sort room as one of their projects.

New volunteers are always needed. The Kid’s

Kloset committee meets once a week to sort donated clothing and host families seeking clothing for their children. For volunteer opportunities contact me at iamhappy@comcast.net

Trails Committee Report by Mike Horne.

The weather on Saturday, April 23rd did not cooperate for the planned clean-up of Heads Pond

Trail. Three members braved the rain and snow to

Saturday morning:

Frank Kotowski,

Todd Rainier, and

Mike Horne. A small tree that had fallen beside the trail was cut up and disposed of, leaves and sticks were pulled out of the ditch in the section between Route 3 and Pleasant St and now needs to be picked up, 2 bags of trash removed from around the kiosk and Route 3, and a ditch dug to help water get to a culvert. More work is needed so members should watch for future requests for assistance.
