WEEKLY PROGRAM

As the Kiwanis sponsor was not present for the meeting, our speaker, Bill

Howard, graciously introduced himself. Mr. Howard is a retired astronomer and University of Michigan professor. He became interested in DNA genetic testing when he received “condolences” from a formerly unknown relative upon the death of one of his family members.

As Mr Howard explained he had family connections who were able to trace his Irish ancestry back to royalty. He became interested in DNA genetic testing as it is the most accurate way to trace geneology. He told us that geneology has become the #2 pursuit of interest on the internet. Due to inaccurate reporting and “non-paternal events” ( formal and informal adoptions, additions of surnames and name changes within family lines) not all geneology information is accurate. He explained that DNA testing can’t prove a pedigree but it can narrow down the family lines. Genetic testing produces “markers” which can be compared against other family marker lines.

DNA testing is accomplished by painlessly taking a swab inside of the cheek and submitting to a test agency. A 12, 25, 37, 67 string of marker numbers can be obtained. Matches indicate probabilities that you and someone else have a most recent common ancestor within a certain number of generations.

Trees are now becoming available that show genetic relationships back many hundreds and thousands of years.

A summary of Mr Howard’s presentation which includes popular references/websites now in use is available at http://mysite.verizon.net/web8/Kiwanis.pdf
