ATF Selected Comments
Fall 2011 ATF Meetings
INTRODUCTION
Each year a summary of selected comments from the Articulation Task Force meetings is compiled
and shared at a Spring APASC meeting. In addition to the items listed below there were several topics
discussed at numerous ATFs.
First, many of the ATF are still working to establish commensurate credit for the credit-by-exam
programs including Advance Placement (AP), International Baccalaureate (IB), College Level
Examination Program (CLEP) and the DANTES Subject Standardized Tests (DSST). Second, there was
interest in the SUN System and some ATFs wondered how to add courses. Third, a number of ATFs
were asked if they would consider alternative ways to meet, such as every other year or having one
large meeting with all ATFs, to determine if there are more effective and resource-efficient ways to
conduct ATF business. The responses were varied. Most, however, like to meet annually.
Following are some additional comments, unique to the ATF identified, for review.
Allied Health: Agreed to delete their Common Course Matrix because it is misleading.
Anthropology

Some concern expressed about dual enrollment courses, teacher credentials for the DE courses, etc.

Concern expressed “. . . regarding competition between online environments and in-person classes
regarding headcounts and competition between departments and campuses.”
Business: NAU expressed concern about students bringing in Financial Accounting from one institutions and
Managerial Accounting from another. If they come from the same institution as a “package” that is fine
otherwise it could be a problem. This may be a short term issue.
Chemistry: Virtual labs still hot topic, but becoming more prevalent. ACS position is that they should be labeled
as such because they are a different experience. “For now it is clear – the majority opinion of the Arizona
Chemistry Articulation Task Force members is that a virtual general chemistry laboratory experience cannot
satisfy learning outcomes adequately.”
Dance:
 There was a discussion regarding ASU notes on CEG that students must audition at ASU for evaluation
of technique levels before credits can be applied at a major level. UA would like to consider putting
that in their CEG.


There was discussion about the University of Wyoming and Grand Canyon University being good fits
for dance students in Arizona.
Education
 Community college(s) expressed concern that ASU is removing Introduction to Education from their
program. ASU in the process of a major reform to their education program.
 Will revisit the AAEE at the spring meeting and invite and ADE representative
 Request from MCCD that the universities reevaluate the decision not to allow community colleges to
teach the SEI Completion course
Exercise Science, Kinesiology, Physical Education, Health and Wellness: Would like to have two Common
Course matrices: one for the degrees for which the AGEC-A is most appropriate and one for the degree for
which the AGEC-S is appropriate.
Family Studies and Consumer Sciences
 Voted to ask Early Childhood Education if they can meet together next year.
 Universities need to communicate with community college faculty when new 100 or 200 level courses
are created that already exists at a community college so the community college can submit an ACETS
for to get an equivalency.
Geology
 Concerns about online labs; in general there is support for hybrid courses.
 Geology at universities (?) is becoming interdisciplinary with other courses; not necessarily at
community colleges.
 Concern that Geology doesn’t appear in the “Tier I” selection of AGEC – S science courses.
History and Political Science: Teaching Foundations grant at ASU redesign curriculum for K-8 in
POS/HIS/GEO/ECN raised concerns from both POS and HIS members that this would dilute AZ and US POS and
HIS instruction and reduce enrollment in POS 220 and US HIS courses. Specifically, the notes indicated the
changes will “. . . diminish the depth and breadth of exposure of education students to the Arizona and U.S.
constitutions and to U.S. history, and adversely affect the way this subject matter and these course are being
taught and offered at other colleges and universities in Arizona. “
Hospitality: There was some discussion regarding dual enrollment: Scottsdale CC would like to pre- and post
test the students; Chaparral and Fountain Hills High Schools wanted guidance from NAU on dual enrollment.
Humanities: Discussion of duel enrollment (there were no more details on what this meant)

Journalism & Media Arts
 Suggested collaboration with other ATFs, especially Art, Photography (there is no ATF for
Photography), Computing and perhaps Theatre Arts, Technology, and Media.
 Suggested a 15 minute presentation by Tucson Industry Leaders (one of six fields) on Future of the
Discipline and Trends (could be pre-recorded) as well as Curriculum Design discussion with K-12/Dual
Enrollment HS administrators (identify student skills sets essential to career success). Include small
business management skills, especially Accounting, Business, and Marketing.
Languages
 Suggested that universities consider offering credit for IB Standard Level exams (currently credit is only
awarded for Higher Level Exams).
 Concern expresses about varying amounts of credit offered for languages across the state.
Mathematics: Recommended that a SUN number be developed for Math 142
Music: Requested that a note be added to SUN courses for Music Theory I and II [only Music Theory III and IV
are in the SUN Matrix]. Both courses in the cell must be completed in order for the student to have the SUN
course completed. This will not be evident if each course has the SUN designation individually.
Nutrition: ASU has a “Wellness requirement for all ASU students as part of common core curriculum. Would be
a 100/200 level class and could be offered at community college level.”
Physics: Concern that EEG changes not made
Psychology: Concerned that two large institutions were not present
Religious Studies: Would like to work toward gaining more direct equivalencies.
Technology
 Why is there not iPhone or iPad app available for APASC information
 There is a need to work better across the entire K-16 system.
Theatre Arts: Would like to bring film faculty into this ATF
