EXPERIENCE
2001-present
Technology Development Consultant
I consult extensively for various companies but primarily for Toyota InforTechnology Center and LumiCyte Inc. At Toyota I am
acting as the primary American Techniolgy Advisor for their North American Research Laboratory This activity to help them
develop their research and development plans for internet-connected automobiles to be deployed during the next five to ten years. At
LumiCyte I assist this biotech company in developing phenotype analysis and classification software and technology for recognizing
marker proteins in human blood. This cabiility is being developed as a core technology for a future blood testing method to serve the
pharmaceutical industry in accelerating drug trials as well as develop clinical testing systems. In addition to these two major
consulting acitivies I have consulted to a lesser extent for several smaller networking software companies doing business development
activites.
Oct, 2000 -Jan, 2001
Vice President Research and Development
Canon R&D Center Americas
San Jose, California
Head of research of San Jose research facility of Canon Inc. (Tokyo, Japan). Specific research conducted in the area of software and
systems for Internet Appliances for the Home, Office and Industry. A prototype of a document communication portal was developed
for storing and delivery electronics documents through the Internet to office, homes and kiosks. In addition, imaging research work
was done on a compact internet-connected wireless digital camera.
1990-2000
Vice President Research and Development
Canon Research Center America
Palo Alto, California
Head of research of Palo Alto research facility of Canon Inc. (Tokyo, Japan). Laboratory develops technology for networked digital
copiers including office document recognition, storage and processing. This activity directly contributed to the technology of the
Canon digital copiers with network connections. Specific focus technologies researched that I was directly involved with include:
internet-connected copiers, electronic networked documents (extension of portable document formats such as PDF and PDF
extensions, extension of page description languages for office equipment printing (postscript extensions), networked document
databases, document image scanning and printing, networking with printers and scanners, E-commerce with digital office equipment.
Much of this research resulted in patent applications (see attached list). In addition, I and the laboratory performed exploratory
research on such diverse areas as digital 1) CMOS image sensor, cameras, and archictectures , 2) Wireless Internet 802.16 internet
access, 3) Internet Service businesses, 4) Audio signal processing for the Internet., 5) Wireless Internet Appliances and 6) Internetconnected digital X-RAY cameras.
In addition to my activities within CRA, I maintain ongoing relationships with Stanford Univerisity through the following programs:
(1) Information Systems Laboratory Affiliates, (2) Programmable Digital Camera Research Project ($1.1M funding), (3) School of
Engineering Sunrise Breakfast Members, (4) Image Advisory Board of Informations Systems Laboratory, and (5) teaching of Stanford
EE-203 Seminar (winter quarter) for 23 years.
Consulting Professor, Stanford University
1977I teach EE-203 The Entrepreneurial Engineer nine days during winter quarter. This is a seminar to provide prospective technology
graduates a window on entrepreneurism. The most heavily enrolled elective course in the Stanford School of Engineering.
