Till 10 May STRING THEORY: FOCUS ON CONTEMPORARY AUSTRALIAN ART - string theory is an imaginative exhibition that explores innovative approaches to the ways in which fibre and art come together in a contemporary context and across a range of media, including sculpture, photography, painting and video.

Curated by Glenn Barkley, from the Museum of Contemporary Art in Sydney, the exhibition brings together works by over 30 Aboriginal artists and artists groups from across Australia. Together the works explore the inter-connectedness of histories and stories that transcend traditional textile and craft-based practices. Many of the works on display use handmade string produced from plant fibres. String theory also explores the way in which people come together and communicate. The works have been developed through or evolved out of conversations between Indigenous and non-Indigenous artists, family members and arts workers. For the artists, string becomes a physical material as well as a metaphorical fibre that binds their ideas and cultures together. As with conversations, it can be tangled and it can be tidy, strong and delicate, complex and simple. At 6.00pm on Friday 13 March join visiting MCA Assistant Curator,

Megan Robson, at the Cairns Regional Gallery for an insightful discussion about works in the exhibition and the artists and art groups that have created them. RSVP essential, 4046 4800. String theory is a national touring exhibition, organized and managed by the Museum of Contemporary Art with the support of the Australia Council for the Arts.

Augie March - After a half decade hiatus, one of the nation's most respected indie-rock acts returns to

Tanks, with an expanded line-up and new album, Haven's Dumb. Regularly touted as one of Australia's

'greatest' or 'finest' bands; with albums and songs on the 'best ever' lists - their music is impossible to categorize they have traditional elements at times, then get wildly avant garde at others. They are that rarest of bands that have enjoyed both critical and commercial success - at times their songs have been on almost every radio format in the country - with gold and platinum albums to their credit, yet they remain perennial outsiders. In 2009, after a period of commercial success, the band - for a variety of reasons - ceased enjoying being Augie March, and decided to take an indefinite break. That break ended

2 May Frackman – screening in Malanda - 14:30hrs Majestic Theatre, 1-3 Eacham Pl, Malanda. $10 at door or purchase online at www.tugg.com/events/15243 Dayne Pratzky loved the quiet life on his rural block in central Queensland. Then the coal seam gas company arrived, and that changed everything. Legally he couldn’t stop them mining his land, but that didn’t mean he wouldn’t fight. And so began a David and

Goliath battle against a $200 Billion industry. Along the way he found love, tragedy and triumph.

Frackman is like no other Australian film. It aims to spark a broad national conversation about the risks of our headlong rush into massive coal seam gas development. Five years in the making, it not only entertains and engages, it also gives audiences the tools to get involved in what is becoming the largest social movement our nation has seen in decades. It’s a deeply political film, but not the old style that is so badly failing us. This is the New Politics, bringing together old and young, city and country, conservative and progressive in a shared effort to prevent an environmental catastrophe. Can we imagine any other issue that would bring together the likes of Alan Jones and Bob Brown? See it and find out why.

14 – 15 May Squaring the Wheel combines circus, clown, strange mechanisms and contraptions, puppetry, magic and music into an unusual, thingamabobbish theatre extravaganza. A flying broom, two ugly screaming babies, 17 balls, 34 meters of bent steel, 483 welded points and 15 marching eggs are just the tip of the iceberg of unexpected, transformed wacky materials and objects. Unpredictable, funny, touching, highly visual and occasionally out of control, it is a clever theatre adventure for the whole family in thinking out of the box. Topsy-turvy ways to look at things, teamed with imagination, transform a pile of junk into a resourceful repository of gadgets and circus props, into life and friendship supporting odds and ends …all done in an hilarious and ultimately very human way of complicating simple things. 15 May Securing the Good Life: Developing Safeguards for Vulnerable People Presented by Michael Kendrick

Cairns Cairns Friday May 15, 2015 – Cairns

About the Seminar

• To be human is to be vulnerable. However, people with disability often live with greater vulnerability than others. In an attempt to keep people safe it is possible to limit their lives by being over-protective and so worried about risk that they have little chance of experiencing the good things in life.

• While a person’s vulnerabilities may not be able to be eliminated, intentional safeguards can assist to minimise or make up for these vulnerabilities.

• This seminar will highlight the importance of recognising and understanding an individual’s vulnerabilities, as well as explore ways to manage these areas in a positive, life expanding way.

Who should attend? People with disabilities, family members, allies, advocates, workers and coordinators, and others who are interested in safeguarding good lives for individuals with disabilities and other people who may be highly vulnerable.

Topics covered will include

• What do we mean by vulnerabilities?

15 – 21 May National Families Week - 'Stronger Families, Stronger Communities' Each year, tens of thousands of people and hundreds of organisations celebrate National Families Week - Australia's annual celebration of families. The aim of National Families Week 2015 is to celebrate the vital role that families play in

Australian society. The 2015 theme is 'Stronger Families, Stronger Communities'. This year's theme highlights the important role families play as the central building block of our communities and that community wellbeing is enhanced by family wellbeing. National Families Week is a time to celebrate with your family, make contact with your extended family and friends, and share in the enjoyment of family activities within the wider community. It is a time to celebrate the meaning of family and to make the most of family life. Let’s take the time to reflect on the critical role that families play in teaching, supporting and nurturing children especially as they grow, and in supporting community elders. National Families Week coincides with the United Nations International Day of Families on 15 May. This day is observed by the

United Nations to mark the importance that the international community places on families as the most fundamental units of society, as well as to show concern about their situation in many parts of the world.

All Australians, including community organisations, schools, councils, companies and individuals are invited to participate in National Families Week each year.

The last decade could rightfully be called the ‘decade of the brain’ as advances in medical and neuroscience have deepened our understanding of brain development and cognitive functioning, more than any other period before. Much of the public discu ssion has related to new knowledge of infant’s brains, however, just as many amazing are discoveries have been made relating to brain development and functioning from childhood right through to late adolescence. These findings often contradict many of the long-held practices that helping professionals, teachers and parents have viewed as best practice.

The result is that there is now a large gap between how people ‘think’ the developing brain functions and what neuroscience research has actually shown to be the case. An understanding of this knowledge and its practical application will help to guide your practice to better meet the behavioural, developmental and educational needs of the children, adolescents and families you work with. You will learn:

This is an invaluable workshop for professionals working with children, young people and families looking to reinvigorate their practice and enhance their understanding of clients' needs. 19 May Kinship: Exploring a trauma informed model of practice - Over the past few years the Out of Home Care landscape has shifted from a focus on Foster Care to a majority of children being cared for by kinship carers. This shift in focus has challenged professionals in the care system to include and incorporate the complex dynamics of kinship families into their models of care. This one day workshop will provide an opportunity for kinship practitioners to explore trauma informed models of practice including a focus on the Kinship system, assessment, child-centred practice, the provision of creative support and the deconstruction of the elements of Family Inclusive Practice. With an acknowledgement and understanding of trans-generational trauma we will focus on creative ways to explore, make meaning and understand the impacts of trauma within kinship and what this means for the child, our practice and the system. Learning outcomes: Participants will:

◾Explore system differences in the care context.

◾Revise and extend their knowledge of assessment models and frameworks relating to complex families.

◾Engage in strategies and activities that build a repertoire for creative child centred trauma informed practice

◾Develop a more complex understanding of Family Inclusive Practice and what this means for Kinship practice.

◾Build skills to navigate the layers of trauma within some kinship care systems in order to support the healing required within the family

Who should attend: All professionals working in the Out of Home Care & Kinship Care sector, Family

Services case managers and support staff and those working with children and families within Kinship placements. To be held in cairns CBD, Standard: $300 (GST inclusive) online $280, Earlybird: $270

31 May Cairns Eco-Fiesta (formerly Sustainable Living Expo) - Cruise Liner Terminal and adjacent parkland. We have been busily planning for the 2015 Sustainable Living Expo and have some exciting news to share!

Council has partnered with James Cook University to align the 2015 Expo with the JCU Sustainability

Symposium – that is, to have two complementary events in the same week. Townsville Council is following suit, partnering with their JCU campus to align their Council’s annual environmental festival with the JCU symposium, which is run concurrently at both campuses. The aim of these partnerships is to create a platform for a regional ‘Eco-Week’, where Councils, JCU, schools, TAFE, community / environment groups, businesses and individual community members hold their own new or existing event

/ activity during Eco-Week (29 May to 7 June) to benefit from cross promotion and wider media exposure.

The Sustainable Living Expo will now be called ‘Eco-Fiesta’ to align with the Townsville event and better reflect the event message of – planet, people, prosperity. The new name is also a nod to CAFNEC’s

Enviro-Fiesta from yester-year. The Cairns Eco-Fiesta will be held on Sunday 31 May 2015 at the Cruise

Liner Terminal and adjacent parkland – this venue combines the best of both worlds – indoor exhibition space for businesses and outdoor ‘festival’ space where event attendees can enjoy a day out in a relaxed atmosphere. We believe this collaborative approach to align sustainability events across the region will create many synergies, including widening the appeal of individual events. We are writing to highlight the

‘Eco-week’ concept and to invite you to think about how your organisation might like to participate in this collaborative model by holding your own event during Eco-Week. So if you like the idea, please get in touch so we know what your thoughts are and can plan accordingly. The green edge of the business community is also welcome to participate either by having a stall at the Eco-Fiesta, using the week as a platform to promote their green credentials, fundraise for an eco-cause or anything else that makes a positive contribution to the week. We are still in the early planning stages and welcome any input to make

Eco-Week and the Eco-Fiesta the premier sustainability event in regional Australia. Please contact one of the team at any time. It’s going to be a big job to bring it all together but we’re really positive about where this can go. Stay tuned for more updates early in the New Year.

The Album sold eleven times platinum. GOLD The

Lifeline Community Care (now Uniting Care Community) undertook carriage of the Peer Skills program

32 developed by Kids Helpline. UnitingCare Community aims to offer training to suitable workers in your area to incorporate the delivery of the 2-day Peer Skills Workshop into their current work with young people. The program includes innovative ways of working with young people that are fun and engaging.

Using an experiential learning mode of delivery, the program is based on the philosophy of empowerment and is young person centred in its approach. Why Peer Skills? The program was developed as a response to the recognition through calls to Kids Helpline that young people often turn to their fellow students for support in difficult times, before they turn to parents, counsellors or school staff. The workshop is designed to acknowledge and build on existing skills with ideas, knowledge and strategies for helping young people in their own lives and when they are supporting a peer. Dylan Moran – Off The Hook Australian Tour - Dylan Moran, star and creator of ABC TV's 'Black Books' is back in Australia with a brand new show, 'Off the Hook'. Moran's legendary stand up rants have sold out across the world, cementing this unkempt wordsmith's reputation as one of the foremost comics of his generation. Ageing, religion, kids, and relationships intertwine with the general absurdities of life. Searing observations and sumptuous imagery, painted across a large fraying canvas with cruel, curmudgeonly

'Moranesque' brush strokes and all delivered with Dylan's renowned, shambolic charm...It's simply unmissable. Labelled 'The Oscar Wilde of comedy', Dylan is unpredictable, bizarre, elegiac, often cruel but above all painfully funny. Moran sees through the joys and disappointments of human existence with the sensibility and intense perception of a man teetering on the edge. He chews life up and coughs it out.

His big screen appearances have included 'Run Fat Boy Run', 'Shaun Of The Dead' and 'Calvary'. For any lover of comedy, this is the must see show of 2015. Don't miss Dylan Moran on his 'Off the Hook' tour this July and August. Cairns Convention Centre, Cnr Wharf and Sheridan Streets, Cairns, 8pm, Premium

11 – 17 Oct Anti-Poverty Week - Poverty and severe hardship affect more than a million Australians. Around the world more than a billion people are desperately poor. For more information and ideas: www.apw@antipovertyweek.org.au

. In Anti-Poverty Week help fight poverty and hardship. Why not organise a display, stall or award? Maybe a workshop, lecture or forum? Interest has been growing steadily in Australia in recent years and activities such as public lectures, workshops, conferences, debates, concerts, displays, sports days, media briefings and other events have been organised. Last year, at least 600 organisations around Australia participated in more than 400 activities during the Week, with a total participation of more than 10,000 people. Some Plans and Suggestions:- Everyone who wants to reduce poverty and hardship is encouraged to organize activities during the Week or join in some being organised by other people. The activities can be large or small, and activities at local levels are especially welcome. They can be on whatever topics, and whatever days, suit their organisers.

Official opening activities will be organised on Sunday 11th October and Monday 12th October. It is suggested that people could organise local anti-poverty forums on Wednesday 14th October, perhaps inviting local MPs and mayors to attend. To notify your plans or get further information, contact us at:

30 Oct – 1 Nov EMDR Institute Basic Training: Cairns Weekend 1: Friday 30 October – Sunday 1 November 2015,

Venue: To be notified, Fee: $880 (includes GST), To register for the training go to www.emdr.com.au

to take you to EMDR Training Australia and New Zealand

Dr Francine Shapiro is the originator and developer of the EMDR approach to psychotherapy. Rigorous research has established the efficacy of EMDR as a front line treatment for PTSD. Research has now extended well beyond the trauma field with supportive studies in the areas of phobias, panic disorder, grief, sexual dysfunction, chemical dependency, sexual addiction, pathological gambling, dissociative disorders, performance enhancement, somatic disorders and a variety of other diagnosis. In 1990 Dr

Shapiro founded the EMDR Institute which today provides trainings throughout Europe, Asia, USA,

Canada, and South America. It is the only training offered in Australia and New Zealand which has this international recognition and maintains the internationally required high standards. The EMDR Institute

Basic training is an accredited EMDR training which is conducted over six days to ensure that participants may optimise their exposure to the practice of EMDR with six separate practicum sessions.

The six days are broken into two, 3-day trainings named Weekend 1 and Weekend 2. Each three day training is followed by a five hour supervision component. Group supervision dates are usually determined by the participants at the training. The training is an interactive learning experience participants are required to bring a minor issue to address at the training. Sigmund Burzynski is a member of the EMDR Institute faculty and is in private psychological practice in Geelong, Australia. He has an extensive clinical background and has worked in the Victorian prison system for six years. He has

39 been in private practice since 1994 and an EMDR Institute trainer since 1998. He has provided EMDR training in Hong Kong, Singapore, New Zealand, and throughout Australia. In 2010 he presented a case study on trauma based anger at the inaugural EMDR Asia conference in Bali. He is also extensively involved in the supervision and training of psychologists and has lectured on EMDR at the University of

Indonesia, and Tarumanagora University Indonesia. He provides supervision and training to psychologists nationally and internationally. Eligibility: Those eligible to attend the training include psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers and counsellors (must have a minimum of a four year tertiary qualification)

23 – 26 Nov 2015 TASA conference - The Cairns Institute and the College of Arts, Society & Education at James

Cook University are delighted to host the 2015 The Australian Sociological Association (TASA)

Conference, Neoliberalism and contemporary challenges for the Asia-Pacific, in Cairns. As a global structure, neoliberalism has impacted lives around the world in far more than an economic sense. This conference provides us with the opportunity to further understand the global effects of neoliberalism, but especially the ways neoliberalism is experienced in different local contexts. The experiences of Australia and New Zealand are different from those of Asia and again of the Pacific. What challenges and opportunities does neoliberalism present and how does sociology respond to those challenges? Keynote speakers will be Professor Eva Cox and Professor Vedi Hadiz. A third keynote speaker will be confirmed soon. For more information please visit www.tasa.org.au/tasa-conference/2015-tasa-conference/
