Assignment Description
Scenario
You work as a team leader for a major ground handling firm. You have been
asked to work within a small team to put together a training programme
that could be used when training future team leaders.
Part A
Task 1 (P1)
Write up part one of the training package by introducing the following:

different styles of leadership, including authoritarian, democratic,
formal and informal
roles and responsibilities of the team leader, the qualities and skills
they need and the benefits team leaders can bring to the organisation
and team members
benefits of teams to aviation organisations e.g. efficiency, commitment
of staff and to team members themselves e.g. shared expertise,
personal development
Task 2 (M1)
Refer to two different aviation organisations for example British Airways and
Ryan Air. Compare the different leadership styles used within these two
organisations referring to the impact that these different styles of
leadership and management have on the role of the team leader.
Task 3 (D1)
Based on these comparisons evaluate the effectiveness of two different
types of leadership within aviation organisations and make appropriate
suggestions for improvement. For example if an airline adopts an
authoritarian style of management team members may perform well when
the manager is there but no so well if the manager is absent because they
are used to operating under instruction. A suggested improvement could
be……..

Part B
Task 1 (P3)
Participate in a team activity which will be filmed as part of a training film.
The aim of the film is to describe/present types of communication e.g. nonverbal. The role of the team leader will be shared to allow you the
opportunity to use appropriate skills and qualities to lead a team. It is
important to ensure team goals e.g. to ensure the quality of the film, are
set and met. Relevant processes will also have to be followed e.g. team
meetings and allocating roles.
Task 2 (P2)
Describe/present the different types of communication that a team leader
would use when leading a team e.g. non-verbal, verbal.
Within the team activity you will be assessed on your ability to
communicate with a team situation.

communication, lack of appropriate skills. You should describe the barriers
in general although specific examples from research may be given where
appropriate
Task 2 (P5)
Describe evaluation methods that can be used to assess effective team
leadership e.g. completion of task within a given timescale, skills
development.
Task 3 (M3)
Analyse your own performance in leading the team in part B, discuss the
barriers to effective teamwork you faced and suggest possible solutions e.g.
