Residential Life and Housing

Off-Campus

Application Guide

As a residential campus, Colorado College is heavily invested in the student living experience, including the opportunities for growth and learning as students prepare to become a part of the off-campus community. Our goal is to make the transition from living on campus to living off as smooth as possible and to ensure that we have done all we can to prepare students to live successfully in the surrounding community. The information in this Guide is offered to help you navigate the steps in the process.

As you prepare to move off campus and begin investigating housing options, we encourage you to consider

Cottage Housing. These renovated College managed properties offer options from single-person studios to 6person houses at very competitive rates and are only available to Colorado College Seniors. To learn more, visit the Residential Life and Housing website at http://www.coloradocollege.edu/offices/residentiallife/housing-facilitiesinformation/senior-cottages.dot

. Note that the application process for Cottage Housing will take place during the fall semester. Watch for additional information.

Off-Campus Application Requirements

To be eligible to apply to live off campus the following year, students must have at least 16 credits at the start of the fall semester or 4 semesters in campus housing. The assumption is that an additional 8 credits and/or 2 semesters on campus will be earned during the course of the year, resulting in the student having senior standing at the start of the following fall semester. The College reserves the right to withdraw off-campus approval if the student does not attain senior standing as expected.

There are three components that comprise the off campus application process:

Students must attend an off-campus workshop

Students must take part in one of the educational programs offered

Students must submit an online off-campus application

Workshops

Workshops will be offered twice a week during Weeks 2 and 3 of Block I as well as during weeks 1, 2, and 3 of

Block II. Students who wish to live off campus must attend one of these sessions. You must have your CC ID with you so that you can swipe it to register your attendance at the workshop.

Educational Programs

Students will be able to select from a menu of educational programs. You are required to attend at least one program but are welcome to attend as many as you would like. Topics will include the following:

Maintenance Issues: What problems commonly occur, how do I fix them, who do I contact in case of maintenance emergencies? www.coloradocollege.edu/reslife 1

Social Hosting: What are my social host responsibilities, both from a community and a legal point of view?

Resource Information Fair: A guide to the various campus and community resources available to students.

Signing a Lease: What are the various responsibilities and legal obligations associated with signing a lease?

Navigating your Values: A guide to help determine your personal values and expectations with regard to housing and roommate searches to ensure that you have a more positive living experience.

You must have your CC ID with you so that you can swipe it to register your attendance at the information session.

Application

Once you have completed both of the informational components of applying to live off campus (the workshop and an educational program), you will be able to access the online offcampus application. To do that, you’ll log into the student housing website at http://hmsstudent.coloradocollege.edu

. This is the same site that you’ve used in the past to complete your online housing agreement and to go through online room selection. You’ll use your CC network user name and password. Once you’ve logged in, you’ll find a link to the off-campus application. We encourage you to read through that carefully, as it contains important information about living off campus.

What if I am Away From Campus in the Fall?

If you will be away from campus during the application period, you will still be able to complete the requirements for applying to live off campus. There are online options for both the workshops and the educational programs.

Contact Kathy Butler at kbutler@coloradocollege.edu

if you need access to the online components because you are away from campus.

Off Campus Approval Process

Once you have completed the application requirements, Colorado College staff will review your eligibility for living off campus. Both your damage billing history and your conduct history will be considered. Circumstances that will raise a red flag and warrant an additional conversation include, but are not limited to, average damages in excess of $80 or conduct resulting in a sanction of disciplinary probation or higher. IMPORTANT: You should not sign an offcampus lease until you’ve received official notification that your application has been approved.
