We’ve
moved!
Vinton
We’ve
moved!
!
Belle Plaine
There’s been a lot of moving going on for Genesis
Development!!! Four Genesis sites have moved to
new locations since the last newsletter. The offices at
Vinton moved in July. They now have better
surroundings and constant hot water! Something they
didn’t have at the last location. And each staff
member now has their own desk.
No more sharing or carrying
everything with them.
Belle
Plaine
moved
on
September 1st. Their lease was up and the owners of
the building wanted to use it for their own business
venture. They are now in the main business district
and have gained a lot more visibility. The new
location has a lot of character and built in storage
cabinets.
After two years of anticipation, the
Jefferson facility was finally able to
move into their new office building on
September 11th. A lot of organization
and hustle on the part of staff and the
very efficient Adam’s Moving Company
from Gilbert made quick work of a very big project.
All offices in both the Wilson Building and those on
the third floor of the Lincoln Building were moved in
one day, a move that was projected to take two days.
We’ve
moved!!
!
Jefferson
And we’ve
moved, too!!
Indianola
All of the corrugated machines, equipment and stock
were moved the week before by Genesis staff and
several volunteers from the community. A flatbed
semi, fork lifts, expertise, and time from Keith
Conroy, Dennis Murphy, Steve Ogren and Dave
Carhill helped make the move run smoothly and
safely.
Indianola has been operating from two locations
since the initiation of the Discovery program in 2005.
There was not enough room for Discovery in the
building housing the residential offices, so facilities
for this program have been located in one end of a
strip mall on West 2nd Avenue. When it was decided
that a commercial laundry would be developed in
Indianola, space for that facility was also available in
that strip mall. On September 22nd, the residential
offices were relocated to that same building. Genesis
in Indianola is now all under one roof.
Board Changes
th
June 30 marked the end of the fiscal year for
Genesis Development and with that, the election of
new officers for the Genesis Board of Directors.
Randy Schmitz was re-elected to his second year as
President of the Board. Ned Johnston will also
remain as Vice President as will Ken Putzier as
Treasurer. Gail Rueter will replace Ken Wallace as
Secretary.
From top
with Randy
Schmitz:
Larry Hecht,
Steve Cruse,
Bob Weeks,
Ken Wallace,
Amy Love
Three members of the Board
reached the end of their second
3-year terms and left the Board
as required by Genesis by-laws.
Larry Hecht
from
Storm
Lake
who
served
as
President for
three
years,
Steve Cruse
from Johnston
who
served
one year as
President, and
Bob
Weeks
from Winterset all received
plaques for their years of
service on the Genesis board.
In addition, Ken Wallace left the board after taking a
position at a church in Des Moines and Board
member Amy Love moved to Alabama in March
leaving two additional vacancies.
Madison County Care Facility was acquired and
closed after offices were moved to Winterset and five
Genesis homes were established for those residents;
CustomBoxesOnLine entered the cyberspace world;
Storm Lake began providing services at a fifth group
home; offices were opened in Vinton and Belle
Plaine; Genesis took over the administration of Cedar
Lane Estates near Jefferson which was eventually
closed by the Greene County Supervisors and three
new Genesis group homes were developed for those
residents; we began providing services in Warren,
Ringgold and Decatur Counties; offices and two
group homes were established in Indianola; Storm
Lake Work Services developed a working partnership
with Jack Links in Laurens; a commercial laundry
was developed in Indianola; and Jefferson conducted
a major building campaign to consolidate all
programs and offices at one location.
The Board vacancies have been filled with very
qualified individuals from several locales. Steve
Raymond comes to the Board from Winterset and is
also a member of the Madison County Board of
Supervisors. Tim Heisterkamp from Jefferson is an
investment broker with Investment Centers of
America. Banker, Wayne Vander Tuig, is with
Peoples Savings Bank in Indianola. Mark Shea is the
Access Coordinator for Tri-County Health Network
and lives in Galva. And Donovan Olson from Boone
is a distance education coordinator for Iowa State
University. He is also the State Congressional
Representative for District 48.
Genesis would like to thank Bob, Larry, Steve,
Ken and Amy for their years of service to our
organization. During their tenure, these Board
members helped guide Genesis through a great
amount of growth and expansion. A group
home was opened in Panora; the former

George Carpenter Retires
On July 9th Mangold’s Environmental Testing in Storm Lake held
a special recognition and retirement party for George Carpenter.
George had been employed at MET since October 11, 1991. His 15
plus years of service at MET was second only to that of owner, Brent
Mangold. George, his guests and all Mangold team members were
treated to a catered lunch hosted by Brent, Rhonda, Kevin and Alicia
Mangold. The Mangolds also presented a special watch to George
as a retirement gift and commended him for his many years of
dedication and service to the business.
Community Involvement
Kory Hinners of Panora is a member of St. Cecilia’s Knights
of Columbus Council there. He recently volunteered to be a
monitor of a hole-in-one contest at Lake Panorama along with
brother Knights Leon Kennebeck and Floyd Sayles. The Knights
of Columbus is a Catholic men’s fraternity that focuses on
support of families. They are also known for their support of
people with intellectual disabilities. They are major contributors
to the Iowa Special Olympics and have made contributions to
Genesis Development.
Kory is very proud to be a member of the Panora K of C and
enjoys helping with church and community projects.
The
Knights say they are very proud of the work Kory does and enjoy
his company at monthly meetings and special occasions.
Housewarming Gift
The staff and consumers at the Storm Lake site all chipped
in to purchase a “housewarming gift” for those receiving
services at the Jefferson location. A bench made of recycled
plastics now sits on the patio area south of the new addition on
McKinley Street. Doors from the breakroom lead directly to
the patio. Michael Malott, Charles Leach, Barb Richards and
Kory Corkins (seated) highly approve of the new breaktime
furniture.
Five-Year Milestones
Genesis commemorates five-year anniversaries for all staff members.
The following have reached a milestone since June.
Bob Lebischak, Panora – 5 years
Leigh Engelke, Boone – 5 years
Janie Davidson, Boone – 5 years
Christina Hoefling, Storm Lake – 5 years
Dianne Bills, Jefferson – 5 years
Carolyn Shannon, Storm Lake – 5 years
Genesis on Parade
Summer is festival time for many towns and cities
and a time for everyone at Genesis to get involved with
activities in their communities. Consumers and staff in
Jefferson (Greene County) constructed a float for the
Bell Tower Festival parade keeping with the festival
theme of “It’s So Easy Being Greene”. Since a major
work service in Jefferson is recycling, they used the
title “Genesis Keeps the World Greene” for their float
and won 1st place in the commercial division.
Storm Lake again participated in the annual Star
Spangled Spectacular parade on July 4th with a red, white
and blue tribute titled “Stand Up and Salute”. In addition
to handing out Tootsie Rolls, walkers beside the float
distributed pens and key chains for the local National
Guard.
September in Boone brings Pufferbilly Days and
another parade. The Boone folks outdid themselves this
year winning a $150 prize for their 1st place entry. The
festival theme “Railroad Ties the Community Together”
inspired Genesis to create a float entitled “Where Genesis
Development Ties into the Community”. Their float then
became a train engine decorated with neckties and
manned by Genesis consumers and staff wearing
neckties. A clever idea worthy of the $150 top prize.
Summer Relaxation
This year the annual Jefferson Work Services picnic included a
tour of the Picket Fence Creamery south of Woodward. The tour,
samples of their products and the farm animals to play with made
for a fun afternoon, even though it was very hot. Lunch and a quick
game of water balloon volleyball at the Woodward Park helped cool
everyone off.
Six individuals received attendance recognition and
Chamber bucks for their years of service at the Jefferson work
center. Awards are given for each 5 year increment of service.
Recipients included Amanda Richardson – 5 years, Roger
Millard – 10 years, Brenda Batschelet – 5 years, Jay Duncan –
20 years, Matt Olberding – 5 years, and Fred Woodley – 20
years.
Volunteer Painters
Genesis is always very appreciative of the donations that
we receive, whether it’s in the form of cash gifts, slightly
used furnishings, household items, appliances, or vehicles.
But a very special gift is that of your time and expertise.
Members of the United Methodist Church in Boone very
generously gave of both this summer as they took on the
task of painting the insides of the Genesis group homes in
Boone. Under the leadership of Marshall King, the group
did a fantastic job of revitalizing the first home in July as
they supplied the paint and man/woman power. The
second home will be completed in September.
Genesis would like to thank Marshall and Jean King, Jim
Jordan, Lavonne Shearer, Dianne Smyth-Pettis, Darrell and
Marilyn Erickson, Josh Kraushar, Peg Lorimor, LeRoy
Hamilton, Lorraine McVicker, Dick Morrow, Mike
Cleaveland, Tim Herrstrom, Tamara Peterson and Steve Sandergren for all their hard work and for caring about
Genesis and the people we serve.
This group came to us to see if we had a project they could help us with, and we are very grateful for that. There
are always things to be done and never enough time, people or funds to do them. Manpower is something that we
never have enough of when it comes to tasks like painting and upkeep. The following projects also need attention.
If you or your organization is interested in volunteering your time to help with one of these, please call that location
and let them know. They would be thrilled to have your help.
 Discovery in Indianola could use volunteers to spend some one-on-one time with individuals in that
program or to help with specific crafts or activities like bingo. Call 515-961-6918 and ask for Heather.
 Residential Services in Storm Lake has a landscaping and cleanup project at one of the homes that they
could use some help with. Call 712-732-5038 and ask for Bruce.

The Listening Post ……
You asked and we heard you
Genesis Development has long prided itself in its ability to
respond to the wishes and suggestions of our consumers, their
families, case managers, funders and staff. The Listening Post will
let you know what issues are being addressed and what changes are
being made.
Many questions answered:
On August 28th Genesis staff,
individuals and family members receiving supports from Genesis
took part in the
Woodward Resource
Fair at the Woodward
Resource Center. The
purpose
was
to
provide information about community support to people who are
currently receiving supports from Woodward Resource Center. Staff
representatives from the vocational and residential programs in both
Jefferson and Boone attended to answer questions about Genesis
programs. Genesis consumers, Chris Flores from Perry and Bryan
Price from Jefferson provided information about Genesis from a
more personal aspect. Bryan’s sister, Marilyn Leek from Indianola,
also attended to answer questions from a family point of view.
There were questions……. …….we provided answers.
Chris Flores and Bryan Price
Staff support: Genesis staff often help individuals receiving services deal with budgets, funding issues, Social
Security and other money issues. To help staff better understand some of those issues, Phil Phillips from Social
Security in Carroll presented an in-service to residential staff. He offered information about consumers' benefits to
increase Genesis staff members’ understanding of how earned income impacts unearned income. Staff needed
info…………..we found an expert.
Fundraisers
The Storm Lake Discovery group has often requested extended day trips for activities and celebrations not in the
area. Funding was not available for this purpose, so the group has taken on some fund raising ventures. One of
those is honor snack boxes that they fill, distribute, monitor and refill. The Genesis honor boxes are filled with
snack foods and have been placed in fourteen different businesses in Storm Lake. In an unsupervised transaction, a
customer wanting a munchie puts his 75 cents in the box and takes out their snack.
