Allied Health Freshmen Related Theory Syllabus Instructor: Michele Emond RN,MSN Telephone 508 799-1965 Freshmen Related Theory starts after Thanksgiving break-when explore is concluded and students “pick their trade”. A. Description: The focus of Allied Health for Freshmen is to familiarize them with the actual role, responsibilities and earnings of health care providers. B. Organization: A framework of human body systems is studied and explored to begin familiarity with medical terminology and system function. Students define vocabulary terms, that then assists them with understanding the foundation with the system being studied. Videos and articles from newspapers and periodicals are used for discussion. C. Course Objectives: 1. Introduce student to career realities and responsibilities of health providers. (includes job responsibilities of nursing assistants). 2. Begin familiarization with body system operation and measurement. 3. Introduce medical language and culture-role of ethics in providing care. 4. Introduce licensure, certification, need for continuing education. D. Course Topics: 1. Overview of health care. 2. Nursing Assistant-valued characteristics. 3. Interdisciplinary health team. 4. Patients’ rights. 5. Ethical issues affecting the nursing assistant. 6. Basic human needs. 7. Cultural sensitivity. 8. Employability skills. 9. The Integumentary system. 10. The Respiratory system. 11. The Circulatory system. 12. Caring for the emotionally stressed patient. 13. OSHA (Occupational Safety and Health Administration) E. Text: 1. Grading: In Vocational Education, performing is as important as knowing content: 1. Exams/quizzes /assignments50% 2. Attendance/participation/conduct/50% Exams: Exams will be at the end of a major topic on body systems. Generally, exam questions will be reviewed in class prior to the test. Missed exams must be made up within the next RT week. Critical thinking questions will evaluate the student’s ability to process and integrate information. Writing in paragraph format will assist the student with health care documentation.. Assignments: Class time will be provided for students to complete assignments. Homework will be assigned if work is not completed in class. Attendance/Conduct/Participation: Students are expected to follow the Allied Health uniform and conduct policies. Students and parents sign forms to indicate familiarity with expectations and compliance issues. Our goal is to have students eventually take care of real patients; therefore, it is critical that students understand the need for integrity and compliance with hospital and school rules. Eating and drinking, as well as cell phones and CD players-are not permitted in the classroom/clinical setting. Students are expected to be on time.
