HOUSING OPTIONS and tips to ease your way, for TEACHERS who take SUMMER PHYSICS & CHEMISTRY COURSES at ARIZONA STATE UNIVERSITY. (compiled by Jane.Jackson@asu.edu. Partly revised in February 2016.) Long-distance teachers who take ASU courses in summer can (1) live in an apartment on or off campus, and have their own bedroom or (2) bring their family and rent a condo or apartment off campus. Here are suggestions; also tips to ease your way while at ASU. OPTIONS IN SUMMER: (1) ON-CAMPUS APARTMENT HOUSING FOR INDIVIDUALS: Cholla Hall on Rural Road, on the east end of campus, is our favorite on-campus housing. It was renovated in summer 2014, and now has furnished 2-bedroom, 1bedroom, and studio apartments for students and summer conference attendees. Each person has their own bedroom. No children, no married couples unless both are conference attendees and/or ASU students. In summers, when apartment-style dorms are not being renovated, I arrange housing there for teachers in our summer Modeling Instruction/MNS program, at a group discount. Email me, or download an application form, if you would like me to arrange housing for you: http://modeling.asu.edu/MNS/MNS.html in the section called “Important info about the program for teachers …” Prepare meals in the apartment, and/or eat at several low-cost cafes nearby. The only open cafeteria is in the Memorial Union, in the center of campus. No meal plans in summers. Memorial Union FAST FOOD locations & hours: http://sundevildining.asu.edu/tempe/locations, http://sundevildining.asu.edu/tempe/hours I downloaded the following: “This coed apartment style community provides 24-hour campus security and front desk services, a computer lab, community laundry, kitchen facilities, vending machines, air conditioning, a swimming pool, volleyball court and basic cable.” Wi-fi and high-speed internet. Amenities include: Twin beds (extra-long: 36x80), Desk & chairs, Kitchen Table & Chairs, Waste/Recycle basket, Dressers & Closets, Floor Lamp, Vanity, Bookshelves, Shower, Corner Table, 1-Person Sofa Chair, 2-Person Sofa Couch, Refrigerator, Stove & Oven.“ No microwave; maximum permitted is 600 watts. CHOLLA APARTMENTS, 909 S. Terrace Rd, Tempe, AZ 85281 480.965.5700 http://housing.asu.edu/residence/cholla-apartments MAP: http://www.asu.edu/map/interactive/beta/?campus=tempe&building=CHOLA-A Cholla is several buildings. "C" is the northernmost; next to Parking Lot 63, which is on its north side. "D" is directly south of "C". "E" is directly south of "D". The FRONT DESK is in "E"! It is the LARGEST building. "B" is westernmost. "G" is easternmost, along Terrace Rd. "A" is in the SW corner, just north of metered visitor parking lot 62. (Closest to bus stops on Rural Road) "F" is furthest SE. See the sections below, called TIPS TO EASE YOUR WAY and LOGISTICS of the ASU CAMPUS in TEMPE. (2) FAMILY HOUSING: If you have a car or are willing to take a bus, strongly consider living in Scottsdale in a privately-owned condo or apartment near downtown or farther north. You should be able to get a beautiful “winter visitor” apartment in a lovely locale cheaply, because otherwise they are vacant all summer. Good rents are $800/month for 1 bedroom, $1000 for 2 bedroom, $1300 for 3-bedroom, including utilities. Downtown Scottsdale is upscale, safe, and lively all year; it has art galleries, movie theatres, cafes and restaurants, a cultural center, art museum, concert hall, stage theatres, and many fine shops. A free trolley. A lovely greenbelt city park runs for 20 miles or more north and south next to Hayden Road, with golf courses, bike paths, fishing ponds, and many other recreational facilities. Bus #72 on Scottsdale Road, and bus #81 on Hayden Road, go directly to ASU every half hour on weekdays, and every hour on weekends. LouAnn Wipperfurth, broker (This section was updated in January 2016.) 602-809-4491 (cellphone) Lou Ann Wipperfurth <louannw@mindspring.com> http://home.mindspring.com/~louannw/Louann/ [Old website. She prefers that you call her!] LOU ANN IS EXCELLENT TO WORK WITH! She goes out of her way to help teachers. She owns 1- and 2-bedroom apartments in Scottsdale. She has 15 to 30 properties to rent in the summer. Some are near downtown Scottsdale; great locations in upscale areas. She owns several 1-bedroom and 2-bedroom condos at Winfield Place Condos (see next entry; beautiful surroundings). Rent is about $800 to $1000/month, including phone and cable! (No connection charges, includes up to $150 electricity). Add cleaning fee. WE'VE RENTED SEVERAL; VERY ATTRACTIVE. LouAnn wrote: “I own and manage 1- and 2-bedroom condos and patio homes; most are at Winfield Place. All units are non-smoking, no pets are allowed, all units have cable TV, VCR, stereo, answering machine, phone service, microwave, all linens, fully equipped kitchen, washer and dryer, pool, spa, some have tennis, very well decorated and very clean.” WINFIELD PLACE CONDOS (6 miles north of ASU, 2 1/2 blocks to bus #72, which stops in front of the ASU Physical Sciences Building) 7430 E. Chaparral Road, 85250 480-946-7965. Office hours: M-F 9-4 pm LouAnn Wipperfurth is leasing/property manager and home owners assn. manager. http://www.winfieldplacecondos.com A lovely community with many tall pine trees, in excellent quiet neighborhood, near Scottsdale Road - 1 mile to downtown. LouAnn manages their 248 condos that are privately owned. All are furnished and completely equipped. For some, utilities are extra. Phone & cable are already connected. $80 to $100 cleaning fee (nonrefundable). 1 bedroom condo: from $700/month. 2 bedrooms: from $900 (depends on owner). One month minimum. Winfield Place is next to a canal; a good place to jog. Wooded appearance: tall pine trees & grass; a winding shallow stream – great for kids’ play! 1 mile to supermarket, excellent low-cost restaurant (Randy's), city park, huge air conditioned shopping center, best movie theatre, more. All "winter visitor" condos are non-smoking units, no pets allowed. Cable TV, VCR, stereo, answering machine, phone service, microwave, all linens, fully equipped kitchen, pools, spas. 2-story buildings. Well decorated and very clean. Covered parking. 4 laundry rooms on premise; large community building for gettogethers. Affordable HOUSING near ASU: (partially updated in 2015) In summer 2015, one of our physics teachers used this website to find a place to stay from June 7 to 26 in Tempe. She has a dog, so she used the filter "pets". http://www.vrbo.com/ Do a search on “charming urban habitat near ASU”. Reserve early! The cost was reasonable. The location is only a mile from the Tempe campus. In summer 2015, a teacher stayed for $30.50/day + 15% tax, for 3 weeks, at Studio 6 Tempe, 4909 S Wendler Drive, Tempe, AZ 85282 [I-10 At Baseline Rd, Exit #155] Phone: (602) 414-4470. FAX: (602) 414-4466. Pets are allowed: flat fee of $50. http://www.staystudio6.com GATEWAY AT TEMPE (1.3 mi east of Physical Science Ctr, on 2 bus lines to ASU) 1655 E. University Drive, Tempe AZ 85281 480-699-5333 or 1-888-474-9381 http://www.gatewayattempe.com 288 apartments, built around 1997; space for 1000 students. They don’t usually rent to individuals in the summer, and they change management companies often. But it doesn’t hurt to ask. [For three summers around 2005, we had a private arrangement to provide group housing there. Our assigned apartments were 4 bedrooms with 4 bathrooms, or 2 bathrooms; and a nice studio.] Several buildings; ones near the pool are noisy due to loud parties. Amenities: gated entrance; washer & dryer in apt., ceiling fans, full kitchen with microwave oven, covered parking, swimming pool, computer room with internet, recreation room, fitness center (treadmill, stairclimber, weights, etc.), tennis courts, barbecue grills. Free parking. SPACIOUS APARTMENTS; VERY NICE! Bicycle to campus, or ride the free FLASH bus from the park in the back, on 8th Street. Each bedroom has a full-size, extra-long bed, and a lock on the door. No families. VILLAS ON APACHE (1 mile SE of Physical Science Center at ASU.) 1111 E. Apache Blvd, Tempe, AZ 85281 480-303-7001 or 1-800-247-6147 http://www.villasonapache.com Office open 9-6 M-F, 10-5 Sat. (and Sunday afternoon) They usually require 10-month lease, but might be persuaded to rent to teachers for a month in summer, since apartments are vacant then. On “RED” bus line, that goes to Sky Harbor airport and downtown Phoenix. 2 bedroom apartments; king-size beds. Gated entrance. Recreation, pool, washer & dryer. Computer center with internet. VERY ATTRACTIVE. Modern buildings. Trees, grass. Covered parking. On a 4-lane street with light rail, but traffic is light, and apartments are set back from street. Bring your own linens, etc., or rent linens from Sunshine Rentals. No pets. Families okay, but student-oriented; not used to kids. Low-cost cafes nearby. A thrift shop, Gracie's Cottage, is 4 blocks east of the apartments. Food City supermarket is at 1338 E. Apache, grocery store is 1 block north. Several restaurants nearby. Tempe Chamber of Commerce is 2 blocks west. Helpful hints for rentals: Tax for rentals of less than a month is about 11%. If you stay for 1 month or longer, the tax is about 1.65%. So it’s to your advantage to stay 1 month or 5 weeks, rather than 4 weeks. (When you sign your rental agreement, be sure to specify at least a month or 5 weeks; otherwise you might pay 11% tax and not get it refunded.) If you pay electricity, request a 1st floor apartment; your bill will be less (in a multistory building). Ask about ceiling fans. Ask about covered parking, for car batteries die fast in the heat. North-facing or east-facing apartments may be cooler. Trees help. (To help you estimate: my electric bill in July is typically $170 for my 1600 sq. ft. house. I keep the thermostat at 80 degrees.) (optional) If internet connections are by phone line, order internet installation at least 2 weeks beforehand. Call Cox Communications or CenturyLink. Billing is addressed to your apartment, 1 week after connection. No obligations; cancel at any time. For most apartments in Tempe, you must bring your own linens, towels, pots & pans, dishes, phone, TV, etc. A partial alternative is to buy items at a thrift store like Gracie’s Cottage, which is within walking distance of ASU. We have bedding, pillows, shower curtains, towels, dishes, silverware, & kitchen items stored in the Physics Dept. that we can lend. ------------------------------- TIPS TO EASE YOUR WAY WHAT TO BRING: a pillow, sheets. Shower curtain and hooks. Lightweight, light-colored Tshirts, sandals, shorts. Alarm clock, clothes hangers, broad-brimmed hat, sunglasses, umbrella (monsoon in July! also can use as parasol to protect against sun), soap & bathroom items, sunscreen, water bottle. BRING YOUR SWIMSUIT, BEACH TOWEL, THONGS, and a PADLOCK for a locker at the ASU Student Recreation Center. Bring your cellphone. THRIFT SHOPS: If you forget something or need a blanket to use as a mattress pad, a thrift shop, 'Gracie's Cottage', is at 1520 E. Apache. Salvation Army Thrift Store is at University Drive and Alma School Road in Mesa (Saturdays: 50% off). Goodwill and Salvation Army thrift stores are a few miles north, on Scottsdale Road (Rural Road). GROCERY STORES: Food City supermarket is at 1338 E. Apache. A small grocery store is at the corner of Lemon and Terrace, near University Village & Cholla Hall. A convenience store is next door to GATEWAY AT TEMPE. A supermarket is on the NE corner of Broadway and Rural Road (Scottsdale Road); that's about 1.5 miles south of Cholla & University Village Apts. RENTING housewares: CASTLE rentals. http://www.castlerents.com/package_pricing.php (I know nothing about them. Prior to 2013, we dealt with Sunshine Rentals, but they no longer exist.) If you want to cook lightly (say, just breakfast), and you fly here, see Jane Jackson in the ASU physics department; she has silverware, dishes, pots & pans, shower curtains, and kitchen stuff near her office in PS-H561, donated by teachers who were here before. (Sheets & blankets, mattress pads, too.) Or try Gracie's Cottage, or buy plastic dishes at Food City. HELPFUL HINTS: * Tempe Bicycle, a reliable long-time business a few blocks from campus, sells good used bicycles from $50 on up. They have many in the summer! Gracie’s Cottage sells used bicycles as-is. * WARNING: car batteries die from the heat. They don't last more than 2 years, even though they're supposed to last 5 years. So bring your jumper cables. Another warning: cars get stolen & driven to Mexico, so lock your car always, * BUY a dashboard protector for $5, & bring old towels to cover your upholstery, to protect it from the sun. * A huge shopping center, Tempe Marketplace, is 1 mile north of University Drive, on McClintock Drive (Hayden Road). Many restaurants. CHURCHES: At the Chamber of Commerce (SE corner of Rural Rd & Apache Blvd), you can get a map of Tempe that includes a list of Tempe churches. Catholic Campus Parish is on NW corner of University Drive and College Avenue (a block west of the Physical Sciences Center). A Methodist church is a block west of that, on University Drive. A Congregational church (with a good day care center) is at 101 E. 6th Street. LOGISTICS of the ASU CAMPUS in TEMPE: DIRECTIONS TO ASU: Look at the ASU map at http://www.asu.edu/map/interactive/ If you're driving on the 202 Loop: Get off at Rural Road (Scottsdale Road). Buy at Decal Sales office in Towers Apts. (5th St near College Ave). If you're carpooling, several teachers can share one hanging decal & include all license plate numbers. To pay for parking: Go to Parking & Transit Services building (in the TOWERS), 5th St between Forest & College Ave. Decal Sales room. Open 7:30 AM - 4:30 PM M-F. (480) 965-6124. If that's impossible, consider parking on the first day in the Fulton Garage at the NE corner of University Drive and College Avenue; enter from either street.) C) For occasional parking (say, on your first day): * The closest visitors' parking structure is the Fulton Garage at the ASU Foundation building, one block west of our building, the Bateman Physical Sciences Center. I inspected a room and visited the facilities in May 2011. I found it to be new, beautiful and luxurious; well-maintained; helpful staff; quiet because of double-pane windows, even though it's on a main street and within a block of the freeway. The neighborhood consists of small businesses, one of which is a 'girlie' joint across the four-lane street. Shelly Legas Leydecker, Sales Manager, was very helpful. She is still there in 2016. Price might be too high.) * 68th St. between Camelback Rd and Chaparral Rd: Camelback House: 2 bedroom, 2 bath. (Jane’s note: a friend of mine lived there.
