Eric Graves Memorial Junior High School MARCH, 2015 NEWSLETTER School Email: egmjh@hrsb.ns.ca School Website: www.egmjh.ednet.ns.ca Principal’s Message I think we are finally starting to come out of the “deep freeze”! For those of you who drop off your children and have seen the mess of our parking lot, I want to reassure you that we are on the phone almost daily trying to get work done or more sand spread etc. Hopefully the ice will start to melt now and there will be a huge improvement after the Break. Just a reminder that second term will end on March 26th. Students should be making sure all their work is up to date and passed into their teachers. Work Recovery is still being held every Wednesday afternoon for those students who have late assignments etc. Grade 10 Course Selection Almost all of our grade 9 students have now completed their course selection for next year. The next step is a confirmation sheet will be printed off and sent home to be approved and signed by parents. If you have any questions please contact Mr. Ingram: pingram@hrsb.ns.ca Grade 10 O2 Program Those students who are interested in the O2 program need to have their applications into Mr. Ingram by Thursday of this week. Once those are processed, representatives from Prince Andrew will set a date to come to the school and interview the students. Grade 9 Big Cove Trip Most of our grade 9 students have brought in their permission forms and deposit for Big Cove. Over the next few weeks I will be sending out a notice for the second payment. Please note that it is not too late to sign up to go to Big Cove. Permission slips are on Ms. Forrest’s desk. Between now and the end of the year there will be a lot of information on registration, courses, orientations, school trips, award ceremonies and grade 9 graduation. We will try to post information on our Web Site as we become aware of dates etc. Please call me or drop in if you have any questions or concerns. Phone: 435-8325 Safe Arrival: 435-8325 the next few weeks each class at Eric Graves will develop their own fundraising project in a school challenge to come up with unique and fun ways to raise money for this great cause. The campaign is centered on raising money for the 5 Pillars of Development (education, water, health, income and food security). If you have questions about this campaign talk to our student organizer Ryan Bowers or Mr. Ingram or check out more information at: freethechildren.com/getinvolved/adopt-a-village/ World Knowledge Fair Immediately after March Break students in grade 7 will start working on an exciting learning activity in grade 7 Social Studies. This is similar to a science fair, only the topics chosen will be issues that relate to Social Studies and impact the world today. Each student will be required to participate in this important learning experience. Students will be given instructions, a list of possible topics and templates during class. Most of the work will be completed independently by the student at home. The handouts and templates are also available via a link on the grade 7 Social Studies section of Mr. Ingram’s website. http://wtyw.weebly.com/global-knowledge-project.html Students are allowed to choose partners or work independently. Please talk to your child about the benefits and pitfalls of working with others and the importance of choosing the right partner if they wish to go that route. A date for displaying their work will be decided by the students after March Break. If you have questions please contact Mr. Ingram. Destination Imagination Teams are gearing up for the DI tournament next month. Just a reminder to parents that this will take place on Saturday, March 28th at Auburn Drive and run from about 8:30 – 3:00 and students should be prepared to stay the entire day.
