The Investorstein Trading Philosophy
Raymond Rondeau is currently The President of The American Association of
Individual Investors Boston Chapter, overseeing five New England States. Additionally he is
a member of the Market Technicians Association and a former analyst for the popular website
IndexUniverse where he wrote a weekly technical analysis column. A professional trader &
TradeStation programmer since 2001, Ray has been presenting across the country for the
last 13 years. With an education in mathematics and mechanical engineering, Ray has
developed and applies a combination of techniques based on his personal strengths of evaluating probabilities
and technical analysis.
Trading for 18 years now, Ray’s approach is one that focuses on gaining a predictable and measurable
edge on each individual trade by synergizing various investment vehicles and taking advantage of the variances
and skews that regularly occur throughout the related but still individual security markets. These hedging
techniques and the focus on risk reduction are paramount to his style, which strongly emphasizes probabilities
to determine investment related decisions and to de-emphasize thoughts and emotions with their obvious
limitations. Then, in an effort to reduce market directional risk due to all of its associated causes, equity market
neutral techniques are applied to protect the entire value of the portfolio. This application greatly reduces the
volatility of the entire portfolio and allows for consistent profits in bullish, bearish, and neutral market
environments.
Although systematic and logical, initially this approach may appear relatively complex
requiring expensive software, equipment and extensive programming knowledge to execute. While it is true that
in its entirety it does take some time to fully understand and master, each individual area can easily be
learned and applied by itself with simply a computer and an internet connection. This one step at a time
approach is designed to give the trader or investor an immediate edge on each of his/her individual current

“The Investor’s Quest: Obtaining an Edge”
It’s a fact that markets change and markets evolve. Successful investors are those who remain attentive
in recognizing these dynamic transitioning periods and are also flexible in their approach; contouring their
techniques to what is currently effective during each unique time period. For today’s investor it doesn’t take
much to convince them that classic “buy & hold” investing and “traditional diversification strategies” have not
been as effective, as in years past. In our current market environment of historically low treasury yields,
ultrahigh correlations between multiple asset classes and rapid “risk on / risk off” pricing swings, many retail
investors seem unsure of which way to turn.
One sure thing for sure is that we are clearly in a “trader’s market environment,” and having an
understanding of some of the basic elements of technical analysis and risk control is a requirement to succeed in
today’s “new” investment world. The reality is that for the retail investor to succeed, it is imperative that they
now learn to utilize some of the available, basic technical tools, to assist them in making sound financial
decisions. By utilizing these tools, this helps alleviate the associated investing anxiety by basing decisions on
tangible, logical, high probability techniques, as opposed to those of ambiguous thoughts, perceptions, emotions
and outright guessing.
The good news is that many of the basic and most important concepts covered in this presentation can
easily be learned and applied by anyone, and without the need for any specialized software or costly training.
Additionally, no major philosophical changes are required of the investor, because these techniques are simply
added to each individual’s current investing approach. Incorporating these additional principles to one’s
already established methods, gives the investor a valuable synergetic edge, leading to a higher probability of
more consistent returns with better risk control.

Detailed Presentation Description
This presentation will introduce a number of strategies and techniques used routinely by professional
investors to gain get that elusive “edge” on the markets. Passive investors will benefit by becoming familiar
with these basic concepts, helping them make an informed decision on whether some of the new correlated
professionally managed investments techniques might be right for them. For the more aggressive hands-on
investors, an introduction to these techniques can help them decide which specific areas they may wish to
pursue further.
The presentation starts by examining a basic approach to keep individual equity positions relative to
each other, so that they have an equal effect on one’s overall equity portion of their portfolio. We then proceed
by taking these volatility adjustment weightings and explaining some of the basic principles of creating and
maintaining an Equity Market Neutral position in the markets. Specifically, we look at the pros and cons of an
EMN approach and how they can be incorporated. Benefiting both the experienced individual investor and the
more passive investor by purchasing some of the newer mutual funds and / or ETF’s that are now available.
From there we take a brief look at a common problem all traders / investors face with long only,
individual equity positions, known as the “Linear Disadvantage”. We will explore some of the techniques that
can be used to overcome this limitation by synergizing derivatives with individual underlying positions, as
opposed to a straight linear, one-to-one “amateur” like correlation. This is an approach that can give an investor
a mathematical advantage and allow them to create a risk / return profile that matches their capital, risk profile,
market expectations and personality.
Ending Part I, we briefly summarize these principles with the entire “Investorstein” philosophy and
discuss why these combined approaches lead to a higher probability of attaining profits in a variety of market
environments while greatly reducing associated risk in bear markets.
After a short break, we shift to the second part of the presentation where we focus on overcoming the
second hurdle, ourselves, with the use of technical analysis. Here we will explore ways of applying technical
analysis, not only to emphasize our strengths of making intellectually based decisions, but to also de-emphasize
our limitations, by reducing the effect of emotions on those decisions. This transitions us into Trend Lines and
their related theory. We will take a look at what they are, how to create them, why they work, and how
everyday investors can utilize them to make educated investment decisions. We will examine why application
of these techniques not only improves return performance but more importantly why their application can
eliminate the associated anxieties of making financial decisions that are based on perceptions and ambiguous
thoughts, rather than probabilities and concrete principles.
