Dear Parents of College-bound students:
Welcome to the High School/College Program (HSCP)! Winnetonka students have the opportunity
to receive college credit for some of the classes that they take in high school. In the Modern
Language Department, we offer college credit through the University of Missouri-Kansas City. If
your student chooses to participate in the HSCP, they are eligible to receive up to 19 credit hours of
college-level language. In order to participate in this program, your student must have a
cumulative g.p.a of 3.0 (this is a UMKC requirement), and be at least a sophomore in high
school. These are the 2 main requirements that must be met if your child is to participate in the
HSCP. It is not necessary to participate in the HSCP for your student to continue taking this class.
This class contains students that receive college credit, and those that do not. There is no difference
in the class, only in the credit earned at a college level.
If your student meets the minimum requirements to participate in the HSCP, you can enroll your
student by filling out the required paperwork that will be supplied to you through the teacher of the
class. In order to participate, you and your student must fill out the Application for Admission to
UMKC Course for Dual Credit. This application asks for the necessary information so that the
teacher can enroll your student. If the application is not completely filled out, or if something is
missing, there will be a problem enrolling your student. If there are questions regarding the
application, please contact your student’s teacher. The Application already contains the course
information including: course title and number, and the amount of credit hours for the course. The
application is filled out on a semester basis, which means that in order to receive credit for next
semester, the process will begin again, and a new application will be sent in.
It is also imperative that you be aware that there are fees associated with participation in the HSCP.
The cost is 1/3 the normal tuition cost of a student attending classes on the UMKC campus. This
year, the cost is $81.87 / per credit hour. The total fees associated with your students’ class depend
on the amount of credit hours the class is worth. The current cost is listed toward the bottom of the
Application. There is NO NEED TO SEND MONEY TO THE HIGH SCHOOL TEACHER.
UMKC will process each application, create an account for your student, and then bill you for the
total amount. It will be necessary to pay for the course separately each semester.
Tuition assistance is available for students. It is issued on a first come, first serve basis that is
determined by the UMKC HSCP. The high school teacher will sign the tuition assistance request
and send it in with the application. It must be filled out by the student, signed by the parent and the
high school teacher. You will be notified if you receive tuition assistance. The high school teacher
will not know any of the financial details between you and UMKC.
If you have any questions regarding the HSCP, you can look online at www.umkc.edu/hscp, or you
can contact Miss Benavidez at 413-5500 X8729.
Gracias,
Amanda S. Benavidez
