Course Description
The purpose of this course is to enable students to achieve basic understanding of
computer theories and practices. The course content focuses on basic techniques of
Microsoft office in addition to using powerful educational software for typing (GS typing
Tutor) this software will help students improve their typing skills in term of correct
positioning of hands on the keyboard, speed and accuracy.
The topics covered are Use of typing software, MS Excel and MS PowerPoint.
The course will be delivered during 14 weeks via class lectures, laboratory works, and
office hours. Using E-learning tools such as Blackboard will be covered.
Course Objectives
The objectives of the course are:





Developing the ability of students to type easily and quickly on computer
keyboards;
Enabling students to develop high level of computer skills that prepare them for
studying at the University;
Enabling students to develop an understanding of the computer context in which
their computing contributions will be utilized;
Enabling students to apply computer knowledge to solve designated problems;
Enabling students to demonstrate interpersonal skills necessary for group work;

Learning Activities and Tasks
Prior lecture preparation: Students may consult the syllabus to know about material
that will be covered.
Assignments: Students are expected to perform different activities that include class
participation, homework, projects, further reading and, research on given topics using
Internet;
Use of technology: Students are required to use the recent technology offered by Qatar
University.
Extra work: Students are expected to put in at least 3 hours outside of class for every
hour in class including office hour consultations.
Regulations:
Student Responsibilities and Attendance Policies and Procedures
 Attendance is a very important factor in your performance and will be taken every
class meeting. Please note out the following:
 First day of classes is Sunday, March 11th, 2007.
 Last day of classes is Thursday, June 14th, 2007.
 The three hours class is divided into 2 sessions of 1 hr 15 minutes with 15 minutes
break in between. Attendance should be taken for both sessions.
 University regulations state that student’s absence must NOT exceed 25% of the
total number of classes. Therefore, students are not allowed to be absent in
more than 7 sessions during the whole semester. Absence for sickness and
medical appointments are included.
 You will be warned through your Qatar University e-mail when your absence rate
gets close to 20% (5 sessions).
 A student whose absence rate exceeds 25% will be barred (not allowed to take)
from any coming exams, Even if they show up to such exams; these exams will
NOT be graded for them

F barred (FB) " ‫ "راسب حربر‬is given to a student whose absence rate has exceeded
25%.

F absent (FA) " ‫ "راسب ياب‬is given to a student whose absence rate is below 25%,
fulfilled all course requirements but missed the final exam.

Incomplete (I) " ‫ "غير مكتمكر‬is given to a student whose absent rate is below 25%,
fulfilled all course requirements, have not taken the final exam but presented an
acceptable documented excuse in good time before handling final results.
Classroom Discipline



Students are expected to be punctual
The use of mobile telephones inside the classroom in strictly Forbidden
Food and Drink are not allowed in the class.
