Sunshine Corner:
(Jan Swarr)
Louise Symington’s father had a fall and broke his hip. He had to have hip
surgery and there were complications. He came down with pneumonia and
kidney failure. He is on dialysis right now and has fluid around the lungs with
shortness of breath. Please pray for Louise, her father and the family.
John and Pam Westerman are expecting a baby girl on July 12. Kiwanians who
would like to pass along outgrown clothing or baby things to them could call
either Jan Swarr at 610-933-9181 or April Klotzbach at her home at 610-9172270. April and I will coordinate gathering everything. This was an unexpected
delight for the Westermans, and they had given away all of their baby clothes,
not thinking they would ever need them again! Never say never! What a neat
project for us to get behind!
Love, j

July 4 – Children's plaza plaque and archway unveiling - Friday, July 4th, at the
plaza at 5:00 pm. Advanced givers and those who have worked on the plaza are
to be recognized at this time. Everyone is invited to the plaza for this event.
July 5 - Also, the first children's event will be held on Saturday, July 5th, at the
plaza at 11:00 am. Eric Paul, a magician, will be the featured performer.
Additional events are planned for each Saturday during the summer at 11:00 am
at the plaza.
September 20 - Club visitation at the Wharton Esherick Museum (just off Country
Club Road) is scheduled for Saturday, September 20th at 10:00 am. This event
is open to club members and friends. The museum and studio is a National
Historic Landmark for Architecture and is a fascinating place to see. Paintings,
woodcuts, sculpture, furniture and utensils, all made by the artist, are on display
in what was Esherick's home built over a 40 year period. You will be surprised
and astounded by the work of this imaginative expressionist. All of this in our
own back yard!! Admission is $8.00. Please wear low heeled shoes. A possibility
afterwards is to go to the G-Lodge or elsewhere for lunch.
Fundraising:
(Directors/Committee Co-Chairpersons: Larry Gubanich & All Club Members)
July 4 – We are selling tickets at First Friday at 6 PM. If you're available to
help for an hour or so, call Larry Gubanich at 610-724-4905.
July 10 – We are scheduling a Pizza/Duck Stuffing night on Thursday
evening, July 10 at St. John's Lutheran Church, starting at 6:30. Last year
we managed to stuff over 3,000 ducks in about 2 hours. We need the
same type turnout this year. Please give us some time that night.
July 12 – Duck Race at the Blob festival. Our booth opens at 11 AM; we need
ticket sellers and duck stuffers throughout the day. We will also be selling
hot dogs and sodas that day. We hope to start the race by 4:30 or 5 PM.
NOTE FROM LARRY:
Hello Fellow Kiwanians:
As most of you already know, we will be holding our Annual Duck Race on Saturday, July 12,
2008 in connection with the Colonial Theater's Blobfest celebration.

Over 3,000 tickets have been distributed to several organizations in town, in schools and to some
club members. While these groups do almost all of the work ins selling tickets, we have other
work to do: stuffing the ducks, setting up our booth on Race Day, selling tickets on Race day,
selling tickets at First Friday on July 4th evening, building the catch basin in French Creek to
capture the ducks and cleanup after the event.
We are scheduling a Pizza/Duck Stuffing night on Thursday evening, July 10 at St. John's
Lutheran Church, starting at 6:30. Last year we managed to stuff over 3,000 ducks in about 2
hours. We need the same type turnout this year. Please give us some time that night.
I need ticket selling volunteers for First Friday, July 4 from about 6 PM until we decide to shut
down. The town is usually filled with people and we did well selling tickets last year on a First
Friday. If you're available and want to help for an hour or so, call me at 610-724-4905. I will have
the table set up ready for selling around 6 PM.
On Race Day, our booth opens at 11 AM and we again need ticket sellers and duck stuffers
throughout the day. We hope to start the race by 4:30 or 5 PM. If you can spare an hour or two
that day to help, please call me at 610-724-4905. We will also be selling hot dogs and sodas that
day. Kathy Mitchell will be handling that portion of the event.
Our success depends on volunteers, so call me to be one. Thanks, Larry Gubanich
Human & Spiritual Values
(Directors/Committee Co-Chairpersons – Elaine Hutchinson/Leasa Naroth)
Kiwanis Club of Hanover (Pennsylvania) – Bulgarian Orphanage: The Bulgarian Orphanage
and Medical Relief Fund provide medicines to as many of the approximately 9,000 children in
Bulgarian orphanages as possible on an annual basis. The project has been providing aid
through donations of medicines and medical supplies from area hospitals, doctors, and
individuals since 1992. Distribution of these life saving medicines has resulted in a significantly
lower death rate.
We are asking each member to consider donating $40.00 for our club’s Bulgarian
Orphanage children. Make check payable to: Kiwanis Club of Phoenixville, MEMO:
Bulgarian Orphanage.

NOTE FROM PAM:
Hi Everyone,
Jeff and I are participating in "The 2nd Annual Walk for Fragile X on Saturday, June 21 in
Bernville. As many of you know Jeff has Fragile X. We are looking for sponsors! The money
raised will be donated to the National Fragile X Foundation and Fraxa Organization (both nonprofit organizations). This is an exciting time in the Fragile X research community with significant
treatments in sight. This Walk was started last year by a young mother with 2 daughters with
Fragile X. I met her in Washington in February. We were meeting with our senators and
representatives to gain their support for increased funding for research. She wants so "make a
difference". With no fund-raising experience she raised over $9000! Please let me know if you
can give a donation.

Fragile X Syndrome is the word's leading cause of inherited mental impairment. It is caused by a
single gene mutation on the X chromosome. The spectrum of intellectual impairment ranges from
subtle learning problems to severe disabilities. FX is also associated with a group of physical and
behavioral characteristics as well as speech and language delays. FX is also the cause of a
Parkinson's like syndrome and premature ovarian failure (menopause) in carriers of the premutation. Many families affected by FX are unaware of its presence. Up to 1 in 300 women and 1
in 900 men carry the pre-mutation. 1 in 3500 males and 1in 6000 females are estimated to have
the full mutation of FX. Many remain undiagnosed.

FUNDRAISER AT THE FORGE THEATRE
“YOU’RE A GOOD MAN CHARLIE BROWN”
THE KIWANIS CLUB WILL JOIN US FOR AN ENJOYABLE EVENING
Dear Kiwanians,
The Aktion Club needs your support. This is a big fundraiser for the club. We have purchased
the theatre for the night and have 100 tickets to sell. I'm sure The Forge Theatre cast will put on a
5
wonderful show. This revised version of the classic musical is a fresh approach to the 1967
original. PLEASE JOIN US as the cast brings to life the long-beloved Peanuts gang with all the
joys and sorrow of America's favorite "Good Man", Charlie Brown. Appropriate for the young and
the young at heart. I've reduced the price to $10. Buy a ticket, bring your children, bring your
grandchildren, bring your friends, bring your neighbors, and bring anybody!
See you there!

Children miss nothing in sizing up their parents. If you are only half
convinced of your beliefs, they will quickly discern that fact.
