1, Louisiana Purchase –
In 1803, the United States purchased from France almost 900,000 square
miles of land in North America for $15 million. It included areas in 14
present – day states
2. Why did Napoleon want Louisiana back?
He wanted to restore the French empire in the New World
3. What was Napoleon’s plan for North American and the Caribbean?
Louisiana was to be the base for his military operations in North America
and use it for a food and trade center, and to use Saint Domingue (Haiti)
as another base

Treaty of San Ildefonso
5. Why did Spain and France keep the treaty a secret?
The transfer did not take effect for two years and Napoleon knew the
United States wanted New Orleans

masons, cigar makers, shoemakers, clerks, mechanics, coopers, barbers,
blacksmiths, and butchers.

Jefferson wanted to give Louisianans time to learn about democratic
government, and members of Congress wanted more Americans to move
into the territory before approving statehood

Louisiana, Americans claimed the river was the border of Texas and

American territory

Aaron Burr conspired with Spain to declare war on America in order for
him to create his own empire with the land he hoped to gain in the
Southern United States and Mexico. He was also accused of encouraging
western states to separate from the United States
17. Why was the ownership of land in West Florida disputed?
West Florida remained Spanish it was not part of the Louisiana Purchase.
People in the Florida Parishes revolted against Spain. West Florida
became an independent nation, but America annexed the area and made
it part of the state of Louisiana.

2. White settlers were crowding the Caddo Indians and they could not
farm. Claiborne bought their land and they relocated to West Texas.
3. Baratarian pirates led by Jean Lafitte, were smuggling seized Spanish
and British goods into Louisiana.
