BIOLOGY 2401 Human Anatomy & Physiology I Spring 2007 MWF 9:00-9:50 TTh 10:50-12:05 Instructor: K. Heinemann, Ph.D. Office: Science 109C Phone: 573.3291 x 3215 Email: kim.heinemann@victoriacollege.edu Office Hours: TTH 9-10, or by appointment COURSE DESCRIPTION: Structure and function of the following: introduction of the human body, cells, tissues, integumentary, skeletal, muscular and nervous systems. Laboratory is coordinated with the lecture and includes the use of the microscope, fresh and preserved specimens, along with anatomical charts and models. Various electronic instruments are used to measure and record physiological data. Completion of TSI in reading and writing and one semester of college-level chemistry (CHEM 1406 recommended) is required. One semester of collegelevel biology is recommended. OBJECTIVES/LEARNING OUTCOMES: The student will obtain a basic understanding of normal organ system anatomy and physiology. Pathophysiology will be introduced as merited. Students will be equipped with both anatomical and physiological terminology as it relates to the organ systems. The student, upon completing this course, will be prepared to continue related course work in biology and/or the health sciences. Upon completion of this course, the student will be able to: 1.) Demonstrate knowledge of levels of organization; cell structure/function; tissues; integumentary, skeletal, muscle and nervous systems by scoring at least 70% on major exams and a comprehensive final exam. Exam questions will be drawn from a series of lectures that are based upon illustrations/readings from the text and any additional reading materials provided. 2.) Demonstrate knowledge of levels of organization; cell structure/function; tissues; integumentary, skeletal, muscle and nervous systems by scoring at least 70% on 4 lab exams. Lab exams will be based upon the presentation/use of charts, models, microscopic slides, live & preserved specimens, electrophysiological equipment, and lab manual during the laboratory period. COURSE MATERIALS: Suggested Lecture Text: Tortora & Derrickson, Principles of Anatomy & Physiology, 11th ed. Laboratory Manual: Marieb, Laboratory Manual for Anatomy & Physiology, 2nd ed. Please turn in 9 Scantron 882-E forms to the instructor prior to the first exam. This discourages academic dishonesty and ensures that everyone will have a scantron on exam day. (These scantrons will be used for both lecture and lab exams.) Do NOT mark on these scantrons before giving them to me. GRADING: Lecture (75% of Final Grade) Laboratory (25% of Final Grade) 4 Major Exams 40% 4 Exams 100% Quizzes 10% Lab Average 25% (Each lab exam counts 6.25% of Final Exam 25% the final course grade.) 100% You are responsible for keeping track of your own grades in the course. Do not ask me to calculate your average for you. ***No extra credit opportunities are available for this course.*** EXAMS: Exams will consist primarily of multiple choice questions, but will include some short-answer questions as well. Occasionally, questions of matching format may be appropriate. In fairness to all students, all regular exams will be 50 minutes in length. This means that students in the TTh section will have 25 minutes remaining after exams. In an effort to stay on schedule with the syllabus, the instructor may lecture on new material after the exam; however, those students wishing to leave after the exam may do so quietly and without penalty. No exam reviews will be held prior to any exam, including the comprehensive final exam. ***If you become ill on an exam day, you must notify me via phone or email (or both) BEFORE the test period. Do not wait until after the test period as you will receive a grade of zero for the test in question as well as forfeit the option for a makeup exam. Makeup exams will only be given under extreme circumstances, i.e. death in the family, medical emergency, and will not necessarily be of the same format as the original exam. If a makeup exam is granted, it is up to the student to make arrangements to take the makeup with one week of the missed exam. Failure to take the exam within this time frame will result in a grade of zero for that exam.*** In the laboratory section of the course, all students are required to take practical exams at the scheduled time. Makeup exams are not automatic and will be allowed only when there is a reasonable excuse (as determined by the instructor). If a makeup is allowed, it is the responsibility of the student to schedule the makeup exam during another lab section of the SAME week. This requires approval of the lab instructor in whose section the exam will be taken. ALL CELL PHONES/ELECTRONIC DEVICES MUST BE TURNED OFF (this means OFF, not silenced) DURING EXAMS! Any means of cheating on any exam will result in an automatic grade of zero for that exam and possible expulsion from the course. QUIZZES: Several unannounced quizzes will be given throughout the course of the semester. These quizzes will cover material previously covered in lecture. If a quiz is missed, either a grade of zero or “no grade” will be assigned, at the discretion of the instructor, depending upon the reason for the absence (see above policy). It is the responsibility of the student to contact the instructor regarding the missed quiz and the reason for the absence. ATTENDANCE: Attendance is required and will be taken daily. Please come to each class prepared and ON TIME. Excessive absences are grounds for instructorrequested withdrawal from the course (see pg. 57 of The Victoria College Catalog). If you miss class, it is your responsibility to acquire the notes, etc. from a classmate. If you know you will be late or if you must leave class early, please inform me prior to the class if at all possible. Finally, please turn off all cell phones/pagers, etc. during class. OTHER COURSE POLICIES: If a student does not complete all assigned course work and take all exams, he may apply to the instructor for an incomplete (I) grade. If approval is received, the student has four weeks to fulfill course requirements. Failure to do so results in a grade change from I to F. If a student drops the course before the end of the first 12 weeks (April 13), a grade of W is assigned; this grade is not considered in the calculation of grade point average. If a student drops a course after the first 12 weeks, a grade of F or W may be given in accordance with The Victoria College policy. Students with disabilities must be registered with Jose Sanchez or Brooke Shoemaker in Counseling Services, Administration II building, before classroom accommodations can be provided. NOTE TO STUDENTS: I have high expectations for my students and want each of you to succeed. It is, therefore, in your best interest to come to class every day and to keep up with the lecture topics as we cover them (i.e. read the chapter before coming to class). We will cover a large amount of material in a relatively short period of time. If you allow yourself to get behind, it will be very difficult to catch up to the rest of the class. If you need help, please ASK when a question/uncertainty arises. Do not wait until the end of the semester to get help as it will likely be too late to make a significant impact on your grade in the course. Class notes are available at www.victoriacollege.edu/~kheinemann . I will do my best to have notes available to you at least one day in advance of when the topic is scheduled to be covered in lecture. “Teachers open the door, but you must enter by yourself.”—Chinese proverb BIOL 2401 Tentative Lecture Schedule Spring 2007 MWF 9-9:50 M 1/15 NO CLASS—MLK DAY W 1/17 Syllabus/course info F 1/19 Chapter 1 M 1/22 Finish Ch. 1 W 1/24 Chapter 2 F 1/26 Finish Chapter 2 M 1/29 Chapter 3 thru pg 74 W 1/31 Chapter 3 thru pg 89 F 2/2 Chapter 3 M 2/5 Finish Chapter 3 ; Chapter 4 W 2/7 Chapter 4 F 2/9 Chapter 4 M 2/12 Finish Chapter 4 W 2/14 Chapter 5 F 2/16 EXAM 1 (Ch. 1-4) M 2/19 Finish Chapter 5 W 2/21 Chapter 6 F 2/23 Chapter 6 M 2/26 Finish Chapter 6 W 2/28 Chapter 7 F 3/2 Chapter 8 TR 10:50-12:05 T 1/16 Syllabus/course info; Ch. 1?
