第二部分: 阅读理解(共 13 小题; 每小题 2 分, 满分 26 分)
第一节: 阅读下列短文, 从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C 和 D)中, 选出最佳选项。

Why I Don’t Spare “Spare Change”
“Poor but honest.” “The deserving poor.” These words always come to my mind when
I think of “the poor.” But I also think of people who, perhaps through alcohol(酒)or drugs,
have ruined not only their own lives but also the lives of others in order to give way to their own
pleasure. Perhaps alcoholism and drug addiction(上瘾)really are “diseases, ”as many people
网址:www.longwenedu.com
say, but my own feeling—based, of course, not on any serious study-is that most alcoholics and
drug addicts belong to the “undeserving poor.” And that is largely why I don’t give spare
change to beggars.
But surely among the street people there are also some who can rightly be called
“deserving”. Deserving what? My spare change? Or simply the government’s assistance? It
happens that I have been brought up to believe that it is proper to make contributions to charity
(慈善机构), but if I give some change to a beggar, am I making a contribution to charity and
thereby helping someone, or, am I perhaps simply encouraging someone not to get help? Or,
maybe even worse, am I supporting a cheat?
If one believes in the value of private charity, one can either give to needy people or to
charitable organizations. In giving to a beggar one may indeed be helping a person who badly
needs help, but one cannot be certain that one is giving to a needy person. In giving to an
organization, on the other hand, one can feel that one’s money is likely to be used wisely. True,
facing a beggar one may feel that this particular unfortunate person needs help at this moment - a
cup of coffee or a sandwich-and the need will not be met unless I put my hand in my pocket
right now. But I have come to think that the beggars whom I meet can get along without my spare
change, and indeed perhaps they are actually better off for not having money to buy alcohol or
drugs.
I know nothing about these beggars, but it’s my impression that they simply prefer begging to
working. I am not generalizing about street people. I am talking about the people whom I
actually meet. That’s why I do not give “spare change,” and I don’t think I will in the future.
33.What does the author think of the beggars who take drugs?
A.They should be given a check-up.
B.They really need money to live.
C.They have no pleasure in life.
D.They are not worth helping.
34.Why doesn’t the author give money to the street people?
A.He doesn’t think they need help.
B.He doesn’t have enough money to give.
C.He is not convinced they will use it rightly.
D.He believes they can get help from the government.
35.In the second paragraph, the author presents his idea by
A.asking questions for people to think about
B.giving examples to support his argument
C.raising questions and answering them
D.expressing his opinions directly
36.Which of the following opinions does the author accept?
A.Drug addiction is a disease.
B.Some street people are poor and needy.
C.Most beggars have received enough help.
D.Charitable organizations handle money properly.
B
When we think of leadership, we often think of strength and power. But what are these really,
and how do they operate?
网址:www.longwenedu.com
Leadership today is not about forcing others to do things. If this is even possible, it is shortterm, and tends to backfire. If you order someone to do something against their will, they may do
it because they feel they must, but the anger they feel will do more harm in the long term, They
will also experience fear.
Fear causes the thinking brain to shut down, making the person unable to function at his or
her best. If they associate you with this emotion of fear, they will become less functional around
you, and you will have succeeded in not only shooting yourself in the foot, but possibly making a
very good employee or partner unable to perform effectively. Fear has no place in leadership.
The way we influence people in a lasting way is by our own character, and our understanding
and use of emotion. We can order someone to do something, which may be part of the work day;
or we can employ them at the emotional level, so they become fully devoted to the projects and
provide some of their own motivation (积极性). Today’s work place is all about relationships as
a human being as well as a worker. Everyone produces just a bit more for someone they like.
Leaders understand the way things work. They know the pay check is not the single most
motivating factor(因素)in the work life of most people.
The true strength of leadership is an inner strength that comes from the confidence of
emotional intelligence-knowing your own emotions, and how to handle them, and those of
others. Developing your emotional intelligence is the single best thing you can do if you want to
develop your relationships with people around you, which is the key to the leadership skills.
37.An employee may have a feeling of fear in the work place when
A.he is forced to do things
B.he cannot work at his best
C.he feels his brain shut down
D.he thinks of his work as too heavy
38.Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?
A.People tend to associate leadership with fear.
B.Working conditions affect people’s physical health.
C.Good relationship is the key to business success.
D.Smart people are more functional in the work place.
39.To positively influence employees, a leader should first of all________.
A.provide better suggestions
B.develop his own personality
C.give his employees a pay raise
D.hide his own emotion of fear
40.Good leadership is mainly seen in a leader’s ability to________.
A.provide a variety of projects for employees
B.help raise employee’s living standards
C.give employees specific instructions
D.deal wisely with employees’ emotions

。
Modern life is a lot less to the advantage of friendships and neighborliness than it used to be.
The average American moves every five years. People drive straight into their garages, hire lawn
services, hang out in their backyards instead of their front porches(前走廊).These days,
neighbors don’t even know each other’s names.
Good neighbors and good friends are a lot like electricity or running water: We don’t know
how much we depend on them until we don’t have them. In fact, the authors of a recent book,
Refrigerator Rights, claim that refrigerators are signs of close relationships-after all, you
wouldn’t grasp a drumstick(鸡腿)from the refrigerator of a stranger.
The surprising thing is that all it takes to strengthen your relationship with friends and
neighbors is respect for their feelings, concern for their property, and a helping hand when it’s
needed. Here’s how to develop your relationships with two types of very important people in your
life.
________.A true friend doesn’t run away when changes occur. The sign of a good friend is
one who stays true through it all-marriage, parenthood, new jobs, new homes, the losses. Just
because situations change doesn’t mean the person has to.
Friendships slowly disappear if there isn’t a balance between the give and the take. So make
sure you aren’t being a trouble to your friends. Be sensitive to how much your friend can and
can’t offer you-be it time, energy, or help-and don’t step over the line. Meanwhile, friendships
that drain (耗尽) you will not last. If a friendship is out of balance in this way, you’ll need to
talk the situation through.
11.Which sentence in the passage is the closest in meaning to the following one?
A true friend will stay the same even when the situations change.
