Course Description
This course should be taken concurrently with Animal Biology-BIO 104.

Prerequisite
One unit of Chemistry or the consent of the instructor.

Textbook
Laboratory Studies in Integrated Principles of Zoology, 10th Edition by Hickman and Hickman.

To provide a means to utilize the information obtained in BIO 104 - Animal Biology.
To enable the student to have the opportunity to learn dissection techniques and microscope
utilization.
To give the student an understanding of the interrelationship of those organisms within the
Kingdom Animalia.

NOTE: [Exams 1 & 2 may be integrated into one exam, equaling 200 pts, if deemed
necessary by the instructor. Exams 3 & 4 may also be integrated in a similar fashion.]
Lab notebooks will be taken around midterm and at the end of the semester.
"W" Grade Policy

October 18, 2004 is the last day for a student, at their own discretion, to officially withdraw from a class
and receive a grade of "W". Any student withdrawing after the 18th will receive a "W" grade at the
discretion of the instructor (i.e. student is attending class regularly and is making an effort to achieve).
VII.
Attendance
Since this is a laboratory class, attendance is absolutely necessary for success. Each lab period missed
will result in loss of credit for that day's attendance.

Make-up exams will ordinarily be much more difficult in nature. They will ordinarily be given
during the last week of class or during final exam week.

General Education Competencies
Fulfillment of the General Education Competencies in BIO 105 will be implemented in the following
ways:

Writing: Students will fulfill the General Education Competency in writing by answering, in
short answer and/or essay form, various questions on each exam. Student notebook preparation
will also include various writing assignments.
B.
Reading: Students will fulfill the General Education Competency in reading by reading the
required laboratory manual and provided handouts.
C.
Integrated Learning: Students will fulfill the General Education Competency in integrated
learning by dissecting, diagramming, and further discussing animals presented in BIO 104.
D.
Creative Thinking: Students will fulfill the General Education Competency in creative thinking
by tracing the advancements of the 10 major animal groups studied, submitting their findings as
part of their final notebook.
E.
Ethics/Values: The General Education Competency concerning Ethics/Values will be fulfilled
through various class discussions relating to personal ethics (to include plagiarism, cheating,
commitment and responsibility).
If a student withdraws from BIO 104, the student must also withdraw from BIO 105.
