Gavin Harte Visit Gavin is on campus and the lectures so far have been successfulWater Bottle Reduction Scheme Students Union to take the lead on the project and the village managers have been informed about the water quality. Sustainability Strategy The proposal was submitted on time from the Presidents office. Don mentioned the application to Peter Power at a meeting. The results should be available soon. Clinical Therapies Case Study Update from Nicola: Plastic cups have been replaced with ceramic cups and reminders are in place. No issues have arisen. The waste is being collected next week to do a midsemester audit and the assessment will be made available to people in a couple of weeks. Farmers Market The market has been successful since the start of the semester. Conferences Both Patricia and Mags’ conferences were a success. Lamprey/ Salmon Spawning grounds Colin- mentioned the idea to Robert Reidy but the response wasn’t positive due to budget constraints. Brian Considine- Budgets tight at the moment in buildings, maybe get an idea of costs involved and see if it’s possible. Patricia- maybe ask the Foundation or the Alumni or even staff to contribute to this worthwhile endeavour. 3. Chairs Notices Green Planet Awads Competition for students wwww.greenplanetawards.ie. concerning green eating. The prize is an electric car which will be on display next week at the market. EC members were asked to forward the information on to students to garner interest. UL Photography EC to contribute €500 (matching funding from Ulster Bank) to build a hide on the river for the society. Conferences 3 Students have been registered for Toshko’s conference. Climate Change Conference in Copenhagen in March (3rd-5th) if anyone is interested then funding is available to attend. Government Transport Strategy 1 UL Environmental Committee 2009-2020 Strategy available, Colin has read it and extracted the relevant sections (to circulate to members). Focus on travel plans for students and workers; emphasis on elearning and cycling. Grow your own food course 50 people attending being met with a great response. 4. Spring ’09 Events Week 3: Mick Kelly Lecture Disheartening 6 people in attendance. EC members will have to encourage more people to attend. Week 5: Accenture lecture ‘The role of ICT in sustainability’ 25th Andy Wilson ‘Mayo Energy Audit until 2020’ Week : Debate with the SU debating union ‘Biofuels as a form of green inequality’. Daniel Hayes and Sean Sherlock. Chair needed Week 5-9: Siemens Climate Change Lecture series: Pa O’Brien, Donal Dineen, Kieran Hodnett and Orla Muldoon to introduce the lectures each week. Could these lectures be recorded? Action: Lisa to enquire with Mike Chapman about recording the talks. Week 7 Movie: ‘The Real Dirt on Farmer John’ to be screened. Promotion is an issue with the events, specific groups or classes could be targeted in order to get a better turn our. Maybe use a smaller room than the Jean Monnet? Week 9: Earth Hour Dermot- a project meeting was held. Student Villages and SU (Pa O’Brien) interested. The project between Product Design and Marketing students has been organised and will begin in week 6 and be completed by week 8. -It would be a good idea for the email asking for co-operation from the staff to be sent from the Presidents office. -Chris Fogarty to be asked to measure the fall in energy usage for the hour. -Record the event with photos and video. -It was suggested to choose visible sites for the greatest impact. -Jane Towmey from the Student Villages was looking for help from the EC for more ideas on how to change student behaviour in the villages. Brian- Buildings will help in anyway they can to facilitate the turning off of lights. Some areas will be easier to manage than others. Chris Fogarty is currently working on a number of trial projects – e.g. light sensors and automatic shut-down for P.C.’s Action: Dermot to keep the EC updated on plans and to liaise with relevant people. EC members to email Dermot with ideas on Earthhour and new initiatives in the Student villages. Colin to invite Jane Towmey to join the committee. Brian Considine to get a list of Chris Fogarty’s activities and send it around. 2 UL Environmental Committee 5. Litter on Campus Better weather coming- increased litter on green areas of campus. Colin- Damien Cahill wanted to have a campaign ready in time for this years Spring to highlight the issuepossibly images from last year on large posters. Nicola- didn’t want to create more waste. Suggested a few targeted posters along with extra bins. Action: Nicola to explore the suggestions. 6. Bike Scheme No action happening yet, Colin asked for the issue to be raised at Partnership meeting today. Awaiting feedback. Action: Colin to email Tommy Foy regarding an update on the matter. 7. Budget Patricia- the EC should lay claim to its entitled €5000 budget from Management, but as a gesture in the current economic climate to give some of the funding back. And possibly with the remainder of the money (supplemented by SIF money) to fund a co-op placement to follow through on some of the ideas dealt with at the meetings. The cost of a co-op could be up to €11,000. Michelle- The job should be open to any interested student and not discipline specific. Muireann- could it be established as a project instead of co-op and not a paying position? Action: Jennifer to look at the project. 8. Attendance To be reviewed.
