The market has been successful since the start of the semester.
Conferences
Both Patricia and Mags’ conferences were a success.
Lamprey/ Salmon Spawning grounds
Colin- mentioned the idea to Robert Reidy but the response wasn’t positive due to
budget constraints.
Brian Considine- Budgets tight at the moment in buildings, maybe get an idea of costs
involved and see if it’s possible.
Patricia- maybe ask the Foundation or the Alumni or even staff to contribute to this
worthwhile endeavour.

Disheartening 6 people in attendance. EC members will have to encourage more people
to attend.

Week : Debate with the SU debating union ‘Biofuels as a form of green inequality’.

Week 5-9: Siemens Climate Change Lecture series:
Pa O’Brien, Donal Dineen, Kieran Hodnett and Orla Muldoon to introduce the lectures
each week.
Could these lectures be recorded?
Action: Lisa to enquire with Mike Chapman about recording the talks.
Week 7 Movie: ‘The Real Dirt on Farmer John’ to be screened.
Promotion is an issue with the events, specific groups or classes could be targeted in
order to get a better turn our. Maybe use a smaller room than the Jean Monnet?
Week 9: Earth Hour
Dermot- a project meeting was held. Student Villages and SU (Pa O’Brien) interested.
The project between Product Design and Marketing students has been organised and
will begin in week 6 and be completed by week 8.
-It would be a good idea for the email asking for co-operation from the staff to be sent
from the Presidents office.
-Chris Fogarty to be asked to measure the fall in energy usage for the hour.
-Record the event with photos and video.
-It was suggested to choose visible sites for the greatest impact.
-Jane Towmey from the Student Villages was looking for help from the EC for more
ideas on how to change student behaviour in the villages.
Brian- Buildings will help in anyway they can to facilitate the turning off of lights. Some
areas will be easier to manage than others. Chris Fogarty is currently working on a
number of trial projects – e.g. light sensors and automatic shut-down for P.C.’s
Action: Dermot to keep the EC updated on plans and to liaise with relevant people. EC
members to email Dermot with ideas on Earthhour and new initiatives in the Student
villages. Colin to invite Jane Towmey to join the committee. Brian Considine to get a list
of Chris Fogarty’s activities and send it around.

5. Litter on Campus
Better weather coming- increased litter on green areas of campus. Colin- Damien Cahill
wanted to have a campaign ready in time for this years Spring to highlight the issuepossibly images from last year on large posters.
Nicola- didn’t want to create more waste. Suggested a few targeted posters along with
extra bins.
Action: Nicola to explore the suggestions.
6. Bike Scheme
No action happening yet, Colin asked for the issue to be raised at Partnership meeting
today. Awaiting feedback.
Action: Colin to email Tommy Foy regarding an update on the matter.
7. Budget
Patricia- the EC should lay claim to its entitled €5000 budget from Management, but as a
gesture in the current economic climate to give some of the funding back. And possibly
with the remainder of the money (supplemented by SIF money) to fund a co-op
placement to follow through on some of the ideas dealt with at the meetings.
The cost of a co-op could be up to €11,000.
Michelle- The job should be open to any interested student and not discipline specific.
Muireann- could it be established as a project instead of co-op and not a paying
position?
Action: Jennifer to look at the project.
8. Attendance
