Ding-Lieh Liao, M.D. Assistant Investigator Division of Mental Health And Substance Abuse Research E-mail: dlliao@nhri.org.tw Education M.D. College of Medicine, National Taiwan University, Taiwan, 1994 Professional Experiences Assistant Investigator, Division of Mental Health and Substance Abuse Research, National Health Research Institutes, Taiwan (2005 - present) Co-investigator of 5 phase III global clinical trials of psychotropic agents sponsored by Pfizer Inc., Johnson & Johnson Inc., and Sanofi Synthelabo Inc. (2002 - 2004) Co-investigator of 2 and principle investigator of 1 research projects granted by CTO Department of Health (DOH), Taiwan, and Veterans General Hospital Taipei, Taiwan. (2000 - 2004) Member, Taiwanese Society of Biological Psychiatry and Neuropsychopharmacology (2002 - present) Member, Taiwan Association of Psychotherapy (2001 - present) Staff Psychiatrist, Bali Psychiatric Hospital, Department of Health, Taiwan (1999-2005) Chief Resident, Bali Psychiatric Hospital, Department of Health, Taiwan (1998-1999) Resident, Provincial Bali Psychiatric Hospital, Taipei County, Taiwan (1995-1998) Member, Taiwanese Society of Psychiatry (1995- present) Member, Taiwan Neurological Sodiety (1994-1995) Research Interests 1 Dr. Liao has completed his training as an expert psychiatrist with research focus on major neuropsychiatric disorders, including schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, major depressive disorder, and other neurotic disorders as well as personality disorders. His research interests center around the variation in pharmacological treatment efficacy and psychotropic-induced long-term side effects, such as tardive dyskinesia and body weight gain. Using psychiatric genetics and genomics approach, Dr. Liao tries to delineate the above problems with an aim to optimize the clinical treatment algorithm. Dr. Liao has research experiences and some findings in the genetic association studies of schizophrenia as well as its phenotypes and side effects related to pharmacotherapy with single nucleotide polymorphisms of candidate genes. Dr. Liao has devoted also to the field of neuropsychology. In the field of antisocial personality disorder, the diagnosis of an antisocial personality rather than antisocial behaviors needs in-depth interview with adequate rapport and diagnostic skills. There is a proportion of antisocial personality disorder subjects in extremely violent criminals in jail. Dr. Liao has experience in in-depth interview with more than 200 subjects of them, and has some findings in the field of neuropsychological tests (sustained attention) and genetic association study of antisocial personality disorder with candidate genes. Schizophrenia is a genetic disorder with high heritability. By way of both hypothesis-driven approach (eg. case-control association study of candidate genes) and data-driven approach (eg. genome-wide association tests), it is hoped that more and more candidate genes can be pinned down in such a heterogeneous genetic disorder. Molecular cytogenetic approaches for structural genetic defects may be useful for some of the schizophrenia subjects such as multiplex family members, atypical disease course or comorbidity with other physical diseases. The related research is currently undergoing. Addiction is another complicated brain disorder which was genetic with long-term environmental exposure and biological adaptation of specific brain circuits. Abstinence is difficult among highly addictive substance abusers such as subjects of heroin dependence. The risk of HIV/AIDS infection is also of public concern these years along with a surge in the prevalence of HIV/AIDS infection among iv drug abusers. Dr. Liao is currently doing research in the optimal approach and treatment intervention among these high-risk substance dependence subjects. By way of direct contact to study the individual substance abuse behavior pattern, related neuropsychological deficits and genetic composites, it is hoped that the long-term multimodality service providing as well as specific prevention/intervention of addiction can be of great help to the major issue of public health. Research Activities & Accomplishment 2 Dr. Liao has been engaged in the clinical care and treatment optimization of major psychotic disorders for over 10 years in addition to one year of clinical neurology residential training. He has research experiences in psychopharmacology and psychiatric genetics. In the area of involuntary clients, he has research experiences in the neuropsychology in antisocial personality disorder as well as substance abuse disorder in prison. He is interested in the identification of vulnerability genes of psychiatric disorders and treatment intervention of highly addictive substances such as heroin. In addition, during his residential training years, he participated in the translation of textbook and books on psychotherapy, disaster psychiatry and history of dynamic psychiatry.
