class greeting each other and the
teacher to see how many ‘Guten
Tag and ‘Guten Morgen can be
collected in one minute.
* Activity 2: teacher says word,
pupils respond with action i.e. wave
for Guten Tag, thumbs up for Guten
Morgen. Then reverse, the teacher
prompts with an action (wave or
thumbs up) and the pupils respond
with the words Guten Tag or Guten
Morgen.
* Activity 3: paired pupils repeat
activity 2 taking turns to mime.

correct

two numbers, add
together. Aim to
make as many
addition calculations
as possible in two
minutes.

*Chant ‘Wie heisst du?’ a few times
using body percussion to internalise
the rhythm of the phrase.
* Display it on the board. Ask the
class to ask the question all together..
Walk around the class replying to a
few confident pupils “Ich heisse …
Frau Kelly, und du…? Model a
response for them either Ich heisse ..
or just their name. When most of the
pupils have introduced themselves in
this way to you, do it again, this time
they turn to their neighbour and say,
“Ich heisse…Und du?” Then give
each child a finger puppet and get
them to repeat the exercise using a
variety of names (German ones from
board or nonsense names if they
prefer).
