CAMPAIGN COMMITTEE KIT
Winter 2014
Greetings,
According to Article 11 of the Student’s Society of McGill University (SSMU) By-law 1-1, YES or
NO committees for a specific referendum question may be formed either through a motion of
Council or by completing the following kit. Only officially recognized YES or NO committees
(whether Council or student-formed) will receive reimbursement for expenses of up to $200.
The process of forming a YES/NO referendum committee is as follows:
1. Submitted anytime before the opening of polls in the Elections SSMU office, the attached
petition form must be signed by 100 SSMU members. The petition must be submitted and
approved before the committee begins to campaign.
2. The top of each page of the petition must bear the defining clause of the question, the side
of the question for which the committee will be campaigning, i.e., “Yes” or “No,” and the
attestation of membership of SSMU. Signers should clearly indicate their name, faculty and
year, and student number, in addition to their signature. (*Note: you might want to include
extra signatures to ensure all of the required ones are valid).
3. Submit the name, contact information, and signature of a committee chair, as well as a list
of committee members, by filling out the enclosed forms. Only people listed as committee
members will be permitted to campaign!
4. Complete the Pen Sketch page by emailing us an electronic copy of your 100-word
statement (Optional). There is more information on a later page.
5. Read the SSMU Electoral By-laws and relevant SSMU Constitution articles available on the
SSMU website (Home > About Us > Who We Are > Constitutions, bylaws, and policies
6. The Committee chair must attend a mandatory meeting on February 25th. Time and
location TBA.
7. During the campaign period, members may be added to the committee by submitting their
names to a member of Elections SSMU 24 hours before they can become active.
8. Important dates to remember:
 Campaign Period: March 10th (9am) to 21st (5pm)

PENSKETCH
All referenda committees have the right to pen a brief outline about their position, the question
at hand, their ideas and opinions. This information will be uploaded onto the Elections SSMU
website and Online Voting System.
If you would like your pensketch to appear in French, it is your responsibility to have it
translated. The deadline is the same for the French version of your pensketch. Elections SSMU
highly suggests that you do this, because if you only submit an English pensketch it will not
appear on the ballot when students choose to vote in French.
A few guidelines on the pensketch:



Word limit: 150 words for English and 170 words for French (EXCESS WORDS WILL BE
CUT)
Don’t include the campaign material (e.g. Facebook group, Twitter, etc.) in the
pensketch itself – the elections website will be included on the ballot, and your links will
be on the page
