INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC PROGRAM SUCCESS
I am pleased to report that our Senior Strings and Concert Band were awarded Gold and our Junior Strings were awarded
Silver in Fanfare on Monday afternoon. This is a brilliant achievement and a wonderful acknowledgement of our excellent instrumental music program.
NAPLAN
Students in Year 3, 5, and 7 completed NAPLAN tests last week. These tests can be quite confronting if students are not well versed in testing conditions or techniques. Our students were well prepared for the tests and I look forward to sharing the results later in the year. Thank you to staff for your work in the classroom and to Mrs Greenland for your leadership in this process.
EDUCATION WEEK
This week is Education Week and we have had some exciting activities for the whole school community to enjoy. Our classrooms have been open for periods throughout the week. Students participated in ICAS Computer Skills Competition on
Tuesday. Yesterday on Junior Assembly, Mrs Greenland read a story as part of National Simultaneous Storytime and letters have been sent home today launching the Premier’s reading Challenge.
CHAPLAINCY WEEK
Chappy Peter is a valuable support person in our school community. He is in the prevention and support business: helping students find a better way to deal with issues. Chappy Peter is always willing to provide a listening ear and a caring presence for kids in crisis and those who just need a friend. He can also provide support for staff and parents in school communities.
OSHC UPDATE
This week Jody Lawton and I met with officers from Central Office Procurement Branch to commence the tender process for our OSHC service. I intend to have the OSHC service operational from 8 October 2012.
WHAT A WONDERFUL COMMUNITY
A Year 4 student accidentally left her clarinet in the bus shelter in Young Street last Wednesday afternoon. By the time school started the next day it had been handed in. The family was very grateful to the parent who was honest enough to hand in the clarinet to the office. Once again it goes to show that Petrie is such a great school.
Thank you also to officers at the Petrie Fire Station and Steve for your assistance to unblock a drain on the oval a few weeks ago.
Cheers, Kerry Lofgren
Last week students in Years 3, 5 & 7 undertook the NAPLAN tests along with all other students in these year levels across Australia. I would like to congratulate our students for the way they participated, and acknowledge the efforts of our dedicated teachers to prepare students for NAPLAN. Thank you also to the P&C and parent volunteers who kindly provided and served fruit and Milo for these students on the mornings of the tests.
It was an absolute privilege to attend Fanfare on Monday with the Band and Strings students. We have such a strong music program at Petrie, and we are truly blessed to have Timo and Maria Jarvela, and Wendy Rose working with our students. Their absolute commitment to the program ensures that Petrie students have the best. Congratulations to all students who performed. We were very proud of our Junior Strings who received a Silver Award at their first such performance. Our Senior Strings and Concert Band both received well-deserved Gold Awards. Well done to everyone, and thank you to the parents who attended as well.
Teachers are beginning to prepare for reporting to parents about student progress for Semester 1. Reporting is done through the use of a 5-point scale. Student achievement is judged against a set of consistent standards, or criteria. A
“C” for Years 4-7, or a “Sound” for Years 1-3, means that the student has met the appropriate standard for that year level. It does not mean that the student is in the middle of the class , as it may have done when parents attended school. “C, or “Sound” students are doing everything that is required at their year level. “B’ and “A” level students are working beyond the requirements for their year level.
This means that few students achieve an “A” or a “B”. Students who receive a “C” are where they should be, and this is to be celebrated.
The Australian Curriculum (English, Mathematics and Science), includes achievement standards to guide teachers in making their judgements about student work. It is worth keeping in mind that these are end-of-year standards , and that we are now preparing for mid-year reporting. Students who achieve a “D” at this stage of the year may well be on target to achieve a “C” by the end of the year. Parents are encouraged to speak to their child’s teacher if they have questions about reporting.

Exciting events are happening within our school regarding the use of ICT (information communication technology). Our teachers are making great use of learning objects, interactive websites and programs that utilise our classroom interactive whiteboards to enhance and consolidate learning in many curriculum areas. Some of our teachers are constructing Ed Studios (virtual classrooms) within the Learning Place (Education Department secure elearning environment) to provide a safe receptacle for students’ access of aspects of ICT that they would like to use more often.
We have installed several new computers into the Senior computer lab to ensure that all students from larger classes can access a reliable computer.
Many of our teachers have attained their ICT certificate which acknowledges teachers who understand how learners can use ICT purposefully. Two of our teachers have their Digital Pedagogical Licence which recognises teachers who demonstrate and reflect on how learners use ICT and others are working towards attaining this qualification. Six of our certificate holders have begun an in-school trial of iPads and their use in enhancing student learning. The Special
Needs unit is also using iPads and it is hoped that when funds are available more iPads can be purchased and used throughout the school. As a result of an intensive training program provided by Education Queensland we have given our school website a complete makeover. It is due to ‘go live’ today and can be accessed via this link www.petriess.eq.edu.au
As time allows we will continue to add information, news items and links. We hope you like the new site.

Paying by BPAY is a convenient option when you can’t get to the school or don’t want your child carrying money around. However, payments made by BPAY will take two (2) working days to come through to the school. Please keep this in mind when you pay for an excursion, as your child will not be permitted to attend if the payment is not received by the due date.
Fanfare
On Monday, 21st May, our instrumental students competed in Fanfare at Undurba SS. Fanfare, held biannually, is a state-wide competition for school students. It provides the opportunity for students to perform in front of an audience and be adjudicated for their work.
All groups performed extremely well. The Junior String Ensemble received a Silver Award while the Senior String
Ensemble and the Concert Band each received a Gold Award.
Congratulations to all performers and Mr Timo Jarvela and Mrs Maria Jarvela!
