Materials and Media: Sarah Morton's Day, drawing of pilgrim girls head, scissors, one
piece of lined notebook paper, crayons, pencil, stapler
Lesson
Set (Introduction): Does anyone know what a pilgrim is? What do you think their
life was like? We are going to read a book, Sarah Morton's Day. She is going to tell
us about her life, and what she does every day. We are also going to compare life now
to what it was back In that time period with a discussion poster.
Instruction (Body): Read Sarah Morton's Day aloud to class. When you are reading
be sure to make comparisons of life then to today's life. Discuss some of Sarah's
thoughts, and her daily activities. When finished reading, have them draw Sarah on
the head paper. Have them cut out the two pieces so they are both shaped the size.
Then, have them do their drawings and writing on the lined paper. While students are
working go around and make sure they are on task with the assignment. Also, help
spark their ideas.
Closure (Conclusion): Each student will present their portraits. They also will have
to explain why they wrote what they did, and explain the pictures they drew. I am
also going to have each child give an example of how life was different back then.
Assessment and Evaluation: The portrait itself will show how much they comprehend
from the story. Also, observation of their oral answers to questions.
Reflection of Candidate: I love the open mind portrait. It gives students a chance to get
in the characters shoes. The students enjoyed it for the most part. It may have been too
simple for Zane. He was just not interested in it at all. The other students loved it, and
behaved very well. I would definitely do this again.
